Book Synopsis National Forest Inventories by : Claude Vidal
Download or read book National Forest Inventories written by Claude Vidal and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-24 with total page 847 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book presents the current state and good practices of national forest inventories in monitoring wood resources and demonstrates pathways for harmonisation and improved common reporting. Beyond a general overview over availability and use of wood resources in different countries, it provides a unique collection of original contributions from national forest inventory experts with in-depth descriptions of current NFI methods in assessing wood availability and wood use in European countries, and selected countries from America and Asia. The main topics are national definitions and improvements in common reporting of forests available for wood supply, stem quality and assortments, estimation of change including growth and drain, and tree resources outside forest land. The book is a must-have for everyone who is contributing to national forest inventories either methodologically or operatively, for people who want or need to understand national forest inventory provided data and information on the availability of wood resources. By providing profound knowledge it is a valuable basis for scientists involved in scenario modelling and analysing effects of climate change, as well as individuals in private organisations and public administrations promoting the sustainable use of natural resources and the potential of green economy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper evaluates changes in growth of pine stands in the state of Georgia, U.S.A., using USDA Forest Service Forest Inventory and Analysis (FIA) data. In particular, data representing an additional 10-year growth cycle has been added to previously published results from two earlier growth cycles. A robust regression procedure is combined with a bootstrap technique to produce estimates of mean growth with confidence intervals for the fourth, fifth, and sixth inventories of natural pine stands sampled between 1961 and 1990. Results suggest that sixth cycle growth rates of pine stands in Georgia remain fairly constant with rates observed in the fifth growth cycle, though they are not up to the level of growth observed in the fourth cycle. Overall, we conclude that growth in the stands screened for this analysis declined between the fourth and fifth cycles but stabilized in the sixth cycle. Inferences cannot be extended to the entire state of Georgia but only to the unknown population represented by the screened dataset of undisturbed natural pine stands. We highlight some specifics on what can and cannot be inferred from FIA data and recommend future actions to increase the chance of detecting changes and revealing factors that might be associated with the changes. The recent switch in FIA to annualized inventories will make it more likely that changes such as these will be easier to detect and interpret in the future.
Book Synopsis National Forest Inventories by : Erkki Tomppo
Download or read book National Forest Inventories written by Erkki Tomppo and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-12-02 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest inventories throughout the world have evolved gradually over time. The content as well as the concepts and de?nitions employed are constantly adapted to the users’ needs. Advanced inventory systems have been established in many countries within Europe, as well as outside Europe, as a result of development work spanning several decades, in some cases more than 100 years. With continuously increasing international agreements and commitments, the need for information has also grown drastically, and reporting requests have become more frequent and the content of the reports wider. Some of the agreements made at the international level have direct impacts on national economies and international decisions, e. g. , the Kyoto Protocol. Thus it is of utmost importance that the forest information supplied is collected and analysed using sound scienti?c principles and that the information from different countries is comparable. European National Forest Inventory (NFI) teams gathered in Vienna in 2003 to discuss the new challenges and the measures needed to get data users to take full advantage of existing NFIs. As a result, the European National Forest Inventory Network (ENFIN), a network of NFIs, was established. The ENFIN members decided to apply for funding for meetings and collaborative activities. COST– European Cooperation in Science and Technology - provided the necessary ?n- cial means for the realization of the program.

Book Synopsis Forest Inventory-based Estimation of Carbon Stocks and Flux in California Forests in 1990 by : Jeremy Steven Fried

This book was released on 2008 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Estimates of forest carbon stores and flux for California circa 1990 were modeled from forest inventory data in support of California's legislatively mandated greenhouse gas inventory. Reliable estimates of live-tree carbon stores and flux on timberlands outside of national forest could be calculated from periodic inventory data collected in the 1980s and 1990s; however, estimation of circa 1990 flux on national forests and forests other than timberland was problematic owing to a combination of changing inventory protocols and definitions and the lack of remeasurement data on those land categories. We estimate annual carbon flux on the 7.97 million acres of timberlands outside of national forests (which account for 24 percent of California's forest area and 28 percent of its live tree aboveground biomass) at 2.9 terragrams per year.

Book Synopsis Statistical Techniques for Sampling and Monitoring Natural Resources by : Hans T. Schreuder
Download or read book Statistical Techniques for Sampling and Monitoring Natural Resources written by Hans T. Schreuder and published by . This book was released on 2004-12-01 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Forest Service report presents the statistical theory of inventory & monitoring from a probabilistic point of view. It starts with the basics & shows the interrelationships between designs & estimators illustrating the methods with a small artificial population as well as with a mapped realistic population. For such applications, useful open source software is given in Appendix 4. Various sources of ancillary information are described & applications of the sampling strategies are discussed. Classical & bootstrap variance estimators are also discussed. Numerous problems with solutions are given, often based on the experiences of the authors. Key additional references are cited. Illustrated.
