Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annual and Analytical Cyclopaedia of Practical Medicine, Vol. 1 These general principles have formed the basis of a modified work, the first volume of which is now placed before the profession. Instead of presenting the excerpts from the year's literature arranged in order under a general head as before, each disease - including its subdivisions: Etiology, Pathology, Treatment, etc. - is described in extenso, and the new features that the year has brought forth are inserted in their respective places in the text. In this manner the reader is saved all fatiguing study: he has before him what in the older work was left to his memory. The work, when completed, will present all the general diseases described In text-books on practical subjects - medicine, surgery, therapeutics, obstetrics, etc. - and, inserted in their logical order in the text, all the progressive features of value presented during the last decade. This will remove the cause of dissatisfaction caused by the absence of general subjects in the Older work. If the year brings forth nothing new upon any particular disease, the latter will, at least, appear as it was when last studied, whether this be one, two, five, or twenty years before. The general arrangement adopted will make it possible to cover the entire field in six volumes. As may be seen in any medical dictionary, the subjects treated in the first volume represent exactly one-sixth of the whole. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 740 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annual and Analytical Cyclopedia of Practical Medicine, 1901 When, recently, the first issue of the Monthly Cyclopaedia of Practical Medicine, a journal published in connection with the present work, was placed before the profession, the changes which the Annual had undergone were described. Journals in pamphlet form being seldom preserved, it is deemed advisable to repeat in these pages the main reasons which have led to so important a step. It was to adequately assist the general practitioner that the Annual of the Universal Medical Sciences was started. Just ten years ago the first series of five volumes appeared. What its life-history has been need hardly be told; that over five hundred thousand volumes have been distributed in the United States alone, sufficiently indicates the generous reception accorded it, while the encouragement given the editor, especially by his colleagues of the medical press, can but be recalled with emotion. The last ten years, however, have been prolific in changes on every side. The intense activity displayed in all departments of medicine, the multiplicity of divisions and subdivisions in medical nomenclature, the ever-increasing value of time and the stringency of available pecuniary resources have greatly modified the circumstances surrounding a physician's existence and his needs. Although the Annual had become a much appreciated work of reference for authors and teachers, the general practitioner, for whom it had been especially created, failed to find in its columns the kind of assistance he required. Often disappointed because every disease, or subdivision of a disease, - pathology, treatment, etc., - could not be reviewed each year, owing to the fact that the subjects had not received the attention of writers, he condemned the work in toto, overlooking the origin of the omission. Again, he found the work too voluminous for current reading, - the very mass of progressive work appalled him! A careful analysis of the whole question revealed the underlying cause of trouble, - namely, that articles made up of heterogeneous excerpts fail to excite interest and, as a result, soon fatigue the intellect of the reader. Whenever a new line of thought is introduced, the subject modified by the new point adduced must be recalled and former propositions tending to transform both the older and the newer conceptions of the subject must be simultaneously considered and, as it were, digested. That the sum of intellectual labor required, if the progressive feature advanced is at all to prove profitable, must be arduous, is evident; that such labor gradually engenders a disinclination to utilize the kind of literature involving it is a conclusion which deductive reasoning can but sustain. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Annual and Analytical Cyclopaedia of Practical Medicine, Vol. 4: Illustrated With Chromo-Lithographs Engravings and Maps The manner in which the members of the medical profession have received the previous volumes of the Annual and Analytical Cyclopaedia of Practical Medicine has been so encouraging that it is with renewed pleasure that the editor places the fourth issue before his readers. The marked success implied has not only been due to the novel plan of the work, - a general article upon each disease, sustained by the salient points of the literature of the last ten years, - but also to the excellence of the general articles (presented in large type) written by the members of the associate stall. To all of these gentlemen the editor wishes, therefore, to renew his expressions of gratitude. It is with deep sorrow that the editor must record the death of his friend, Professor George H. Rohe, of Baltimore, who had been connected with the Annual since 1801. To enumerate his qualities would imply that he had faults. Those who knew him well could but conclude that if we were all of his kind the world would be one where generosity and affection would reign supreme. One of Dr. Rohe's last contributions appears in this volume: a review on the subject of "Insanity," calculated to clearly define the practical aspect of the various mental disorders, not only for clinical purposes, but for the court-room. How thoroughly our departed friend has accomplished his task the reader will appreciate. It is in keeping with the sincerity of purpose that characterized him. This volume contains, besides the article on "Insanity," a timely paper on the "Diarrh al Diseases of Infants," by Professor Blackader, of Montreal. During the coming summer its great scientific value will doubtless be recognized. An elaborate paper on "Malarial Fevers," by Professor James C. Wilson and Dr. Thomas G. Ashton, will also, it is hoped, receive the great appreciation to which it is entitled. The article on "Locomotor Ataxia," by Dr. W. B. Pritchard, of New York; that on "Intubation," by Professor F. E. Waxham, of Chicago; and that on "Diseases of the Liver." by Professor Alexander McPhedran, of Toronto; that on "Meningitis," by Dr. Charles M. Huy, of Philadelphia, are also entitled to special notice as models of their kind. The editor must express his regret that through unavoidable circumstances he was obliged to write the article on "Leprosy" himself, and a: the last moment. Still, the fact that he has had the opportunity of seeing quite a number of cases during his travels and the important role played by the upper respiratory tract in the etiology of the disease lead him to hope that he may have treated the subject with a certain degree of competence. This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 726 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sajous's Analytical Cyclopaedia of Practical Medicine, Vol. 5 In presenting the fifth volume to the profession the editor cannot but express the hope that it will merit the kind appreciation bestowed upon its predecessors, not only by the patrons of the work, but also by the medical press. It has proved to be the most arduous one to prepare of the entire series, involving, as it does, almost every specialty - otology, laryngology, ophthalmology, neurology, pediatrics, obstetrics, therapeutics, etc. - besides the sections usually classed under general medicine and surgery. The continued assistance of the members of the associate staff has greatly facilitated the labors of the central department; the indebtedness involved is gratefully acknowledged. Death has claimed, since the publication of the fourth volume, two members of the associate staff: Dr. Norman Kerr, of London, and Dr. J. E. Graham, of Toronto. Dr. Kerr has been an associate editor since 1893, and his able articles upon inebriety, morphinism, and kindred disorders will doubtless be remembered by many of our readers, owing to the erudition displayed in them, the refined language used, and the elevated motives discernible in every line. The paper on "Morphinism" published in this volume is his last contribution to medical literature. Though written by the editor, it is elaborated in Dr. Kerr's own words, and portrays his thoughts; while his signature bears witness to a careful revision - accomplished not long before he departed this life. The special field to which Dr. Kerr devoted his labors has lost its most brilliant exponent; the profession at large one of its most faithful and honest workers. Dr. Graham had been a member of the staff about two years. His article upon "Cholelithiasis" - probably the finest encyclopaedic review of the subject extant - typifies all his labors, and, in particular, two traits which dominated his entire career: i.e., thoroughness and sincerity of purpose. His last contribution to medical literature will appear in the sixth volume of this work: the article on "Typhoid Fever." It fully sustains his reputation as one of Canada's most distinguished clinicians, and but accentuates the great loss which his untimely death has imposed upon the entire profession. Two kindred subjects have been treated in a manner differing somewhat from the usual, namely: the "Disorders of Pregnancy," by Dr. Currier, of New York, and "Abnormal Parturition," by Drs. Grandin and Marx, of the same city. Instead of repeating text with which a physician's shelves are usually fully supplied, - textbook matter, - these articles aim to give the newer aspects of these questions and the tendency of progressive thought. Among the other articles presented which call for especial notice are "Pleurisy," by Dr. Alexander McPhedran, of Toronto; "Catarrhal Pneumonia," by Dr. Solomon Solis-Cohen, of Philadelphia; "Lobar Pneumonia," by Dr. Thomas G. Ashton, of the same city; and "Rheumatism," by Dr. Levison, of Copenhagen. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
