Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anno Domini 2000; Or, Woman's Destiny (1889) is a novel by Sir Julius Vogel. Written by the former prime minister of New Zealand, the novel sold poorly upon publication. In recent years, however, the novel has been recognized as a groundbreaking work of science fiction that uncannily predicted many of the social developments that would define New Zealand’s contribution to human civilization in the twentieth century, notably its status as the first nation to grant women the right to vote. “The barriers which man in his own interest set to the occupation of woman having once been broken down, the progress of woman in all pursuits requiring judgment and intellect has been continuous; and the sum of that progress is enormous.” In the year 2000, the British Empire is an Imperial Federation apart from an independent Ireland. Having granted women the right to vote, British society has enjoyed a revolution in gender roles from the top down. Hilda Fitzherbert, the young and charismatic Prime Minister of New Zealand, is a shining example of the new woman of the twenty-first century. When her burgeoning romance with Emperor Albert threatens diplomatic relations with the United States, the peaceful world order faces the threat of war. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of Frank Aubrey’s Anno Domini 2000; Or, Woman's Destiny is a classic of science fiction reimagined for modern readers.

Book Synopsis Dreamworlds of Race by : Duncan Bell
Download or read book Dreamworlds of Race written by Duncan Bell and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2022-06-07 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How transatlantic thinkers in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries promoted the unification of Britain and the United States Between the late nineteenth century and the First World War an ocean-spanning network of prominent individuals advocated the unification of Britain and the United States. They dreamt of the final consolidation of the Angloworld. Scholars, journalists, politicians, businessmen, and science fiction writers invested the “Anglo-Saxons” with extraordinary power. The most ambitious hailed them as a people destined to bring peace and justice to the earth. More modest visions still imagined them as likely to shape the twentieth century. Dreamworlds of Race explores this remarkable moment in the intellectual history of racial domination, political utopianism, and world order. Focusing on a quartet of extraordinary figures—Andrew Carnegie, W. T. Stead, Cecil J. Rhodes, and H. G. Wells—Duncan Bell shows how unionists on both sides of the Atlantic reimagined citizenship, empire, patriotism, race, war, and peace in their quest to secure global supremacy. Yet even as they dreamt of an Anglo-dominated world, the unionists disagreed over the meaning of race, the legitimacy of imperialism, the nature of political belonging, and the ultimate form and purpose of unification. The racial dreamworld was an object of competing claims and fantasies. Exploring speculative fiction as well as more conventional forms of political writing, Bell reads unionist arguments as expressions of the utopianism circulating through fin-de-siècle Anglo-American culture, and juxtaposes them with pan-Africanist critiques of racial domination and late twentieth-century fictional narratives of Anglo-American empire. Tracing how intellectual elites promoted an ambitious project of political and racial unification between Britain and the United States, Dreamworlds of Race analyzes ideas of empire and world order that reverberate to this day.
Download or read book Erewhon written by Samuel Butler and published by Erewhon. This book was released on 2022-10-04 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition of the Samuel Butler classic, first published in 1872, arrives in honor of its 150th anniversary, and features an updated package and new context for the book from one of today’s great thinkers in science fiction, Annalee Newitz. Setting out to make his fortune in a far-off country, a young traveller discovers the remote and beautiful land of Erewhon and is given a home among its extraordinarily handsome citizens. But their visitor soon discovers that this seemingly ideal community has its faults—here crime is treated indulgently as a malady to be cured, while illness, poverty and misfortune are cruelly punished, and all machines have been superstitiously destroyed after a bizarre prophecy. Can he survive in a world where morality is turned upside down? Inspired by Samuel Butler's years in colonial New Zealand and by his reading of Darwin's Origin of Species, Erewhon is a highly original, irreverent and humorous satire on conventional virtues, religious hypocrisy and the unthinking acceptance of beliefs.

Download or read book Holy War written by David S. New and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2015-10-03 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Temple Mount is believed by some Jews to be the locus of their ancient Temple. Known to Muslims as Haram al-Sharif (the Noble Sanctuary), this site is home to two mosques, one of which is the third most holy shrine in all of Islam. Jewish fundamentalists want to destroy the mosques on Temple Mount and rebuild the Temple. Christian apocalypticists are financing and supporting their efforts. If the mosques are destroyed, Islamic fundamentalists have vowed to destroy Israel, resulting in the possibility of nuclear war. This book addresses the idea that the recent rise of militant Christian, Jewish, and Muslim fundamentalisms and their interaction are endangering peace in the Middle East. It fully examines the thesis that apocalypticist fundamentalists--Christians in America, Jews in Israel and America--are working together to hasten the coming of the Messiah by instigating a Holy War in the Middle East. Several chapters focus on three U.S. political figures--Jerry Falwell, Ronald Reagan, and Pat Robertson--who helped bring Christian fundamentalism into the mainstream of American politics. One chapter tells of Jewish preparations for rebuilding the Temple on Temple Mount. Other chapters document the rise of religious fundamentalism in Israel since 1967, Haram al-Sharif-Temple Mount crises involving Christian-Jewish cooperation, and the rise of Islamic fundamentalism. Separate chapters are devoted to Israel's nuclear program and political psychology, and the fact that nuclear weapons are leaving Russia and finding their way to Islamic nations and Islamic terrorists.
Download or read book Lucifer written by Abraham B. Doe and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2000-08-15 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Armed with ambition and rank, the ‘…cherub that covereth…’ sought to solidify preeminence for himself by way of a coup-de’-tat. His plans thwarted he and legions of angels – one third of 200,000,000 by some counts – were felled from heaven. Following subordination of a serpent, seduction of the first woman, and deception of the first man, earth and its inhabitants were plunged into a life far from the peaceful shores of Eden. Centuries of inhumanity and death later, a far more knowledgeable human race finds itself curiously positioned between a destruction of earth once by water, two world wars which have set the stage for a third, and a promised destruction of the world once by fire.
