Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the Reformed Church in Reading, Pa The history of the Reformed Church in the city of Reading has been a favorite study with the author for several years. It has been his aim to present this history in an authentic form, and in this effort he has spared neither time nor money to produce a reliable and satisfactory volume. Heretofore a good deal of the Church's local history was based upon mere tradition, and in this way many errors were accepted as historical facts. We have endeavored to authenticate all data, so as to present a reliable history. This required a great deal of research, but it was interesting employment, and the author feels regarded for all the time expended in the preparation of the book. The author is under obligations to Prof. W. J. Hinke for valuable assistance, especially in reference to the early period of the history of the First Reformed congregation in Reading; to B. Y. Shearer, esq., and John H. Bridenbaugh, esq., for assistance in examining the county records, and to the local pastors in a general way. The minutes of the Coetus, published several years ago, gave us valuable assistance in determining many problems in reference to the early pastors of the First church. The records of the First church, placed at our disposal by the consistory, have also been very helpful. The present volume is the first effort of its kind. We have sought to present an accurate and fairly complete history of all the Reformed congregations in Reading. To publish a complete history would have been far beyond the bounds of one volume. As it is, the book is considerably larger than it was originally intended to be. We hope the reader may find as much pleasure in perusing the book as the writer enjoyed in preparing it. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ten Year's Review: The Place, History and Responsibility of the Reformed Church; A Sermon Preached Sunday Morning, April 19th, 1885, at the Anniversary Service in the First Reformed Dutch Church of Orange The Tenth Anniversary of tlie founding of the First Reformed Church, of Orange, N.J., was celebrated by appropriate services on Sunday and Monday, April 19 th and 20 th, which were attended by great congregations. The floral decorations were superb. Among them figured a large Xin white flowers the dates187-5-1885, in Azaleas, and the blended colors orange and blue, bearing the Crest and Escutcheon of the Dutch Republic, the ancient Coat of Arms of the Church. The service after the Salutation, Lords Prayer, Ten Commandments, and chanting of the psalm, God be Merciful, was broken by the Sacrament of Holy Baptism, applied to Lucy Merrill Lindsley, a granddaughter of Mr. John L.Merrill, one of the Elders of the church. Then followed the responsive reading of Psalm ciii Prayer, the Scripture Lesson I. Sanj. xxii., the Hymn, Crown the Saviour, and finally the Sermon, which here follows. On Sunday afternoon the Sabbath school held its anniversary, anticipating the actuiil date by one week, and on Monday evening there was a grand Reunion service, attended by Drs. Taylor, of Newark, Clark, of Nyack, N.Y., Vehslage, of Irvington, and others, at which remarks were made of the most lively, witty and withal earnest and impressive character. The tribute paid to their pastor by members of the Consistory was especially happy. When Mr. John Merrill stepped back, laid his hand on Dr. Bishops shoulder and said very simply, This man! the effect was electric. Very feeling references were also made, both to the dead and living. Messrs. Samuel W.Baldwin, Abram Osmun, and Henry W.Olcott were especially remembered. Mr. David ringham gave a very touching description of the first appearance of the new petitioners before the Classis; when the venerable Dr. Taylor, of Bergen, stepped forward and welcomed the pastor with tears, and Peter Duryee, Esq., welcomed as an old friend and co-lbunder of the First Dutch church of Newark, Mr. Samuel Baldwin. Souvenirs of the service in orange and blue were distributed, and after the Benediction and hearty hand shaking, the large congregation dispersed.
