Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of positron annihilation in metals, including electron-positron and electron-electron interaction, is discussed. It is well-known that the Coulomb force of the positron causes very major changes in the motion of the electrons. It is established that a sharp 'break' in the angular correlation curve of the two gamma-rays resulting from singlet state annihilation occurs at precisely those angles where it should be expected in the absence of electron-positron interaction. This makes positron annihilation in metals a useful tool for the investigation of the true Fermi surface. Taking advantage of such a break in the angular correlation curve, a simple experiment is proposed to measure the effective mass of the positron in metals. The experiment consists in a study of the temperature dependence of the angular correlation curve. It is found that an electron-positron bound state or a positronium-like state does not exist in metals. A more general result is derived: in a noninteracting electron gas in the presence of a localised external potential, there is no sharp distinction between bound and unbound states. (Author).

Book excerpt: Positron Annihilation focuses on the process of positron annihilation in different environments. Partitioned into two parts with 42 chapters, the book contains the contributions of authors who have done research on the annihilation of positrons, which brought about valuable information on the properties of matter. The first part of the book deals with lengthy review articles, including a survey of the physics of positron annihilation; positron annihilation in metals and the theory involved in the process; and positron annihilation in alkali halides and ionic crystals. Positronium formation and interaction in gases, molecular substances, and ionic crystals are also given attention. Gaseous positronics and positron annihilation in condensed gases and liquids are also discussed. The second part of the book focuses on developments on positron annihilation and the direction of research on this field. The studies concentrate on positron annihilation in various crystals, metals, mercury, liquefied gases, helium, and metal oxides. Numerical representations and analyses are presented to support the processes involved. The book can best serve the interest of those who want to explore further the annihilation of positrons.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In condensed matter initially fast positrons annihilate after having reached equi librium with the surroundings. The interaction of positrons with matter is governed by the laws of ordinary quantum mechanics. Field theory and antiparticle properties enter only in the annihilation process leading to the emergence of energetic photons. The monitoring of annihilation radiation by nuclear spectroscopic methods provides valuable information on the electron-positron system which can directly be related to the electronic structure of the medium. Since the positron is a positive electron its behavior in matter is especially interesting to solid-state and atomic physi cists. The small mass quarantees that the positron is really a quantum mechanical particle and completely different from any other particles and atoms. Positron physics started about 25 years ago but discoveries of new features in its interac tion with matter have maintained continuous interest and increasing activity in the field. Nowadays it is becoming part of the "stock-in-trade" of experimental physics.

This book was released on 2010-09 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the recent years there is an increasing interest towards the positron annihilation spectroscopy as an examination technique in many fields of knowledge. Its basic applications are for scientific investigation in physics and materials science, because the method is non-destructive and very sensitive to different kinds of defects and phase transitions, but it found its place also in some practically aimed activities like medicine. In the present book are represented investigations of metals and alloys irradiated with 14 MeV generator neutrons. The investigated metals are of the most often used ones for the purposes of the nuclear reactor industry. The discussion goes mainly around the clusters formation in them as a result of neutron irradiation and their growing and disappearance in high temperature annealing. The methods of the positron spectroscopy, experimental setup used in the measurements and mathematical methods for data analysis are also mentioned. The obtained results may be very useful not only for scientists, but for all specialists in the field of nuclear energetics - projectors, constructors and nuclear engineers as well as for mechanical engineers and constructors.
