Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From a low orbit Annie scans Earth for an acceptable location where her people can colonize. Their own planet is burning out, and they have taken to outer space in a desperate search for a new home. Annie is the chosen explorer for an advance mission to Earth, the only planet within reach that can sustain them. During her scans, her craft malfunctions and plummets toward the surface, crashing at an abandoned farm. In a nearby small town seventeen-year-old Mark lingers at his bedroom window hoping for a glimpse of the girl next door. When a fiery object streaks across the nighttime sky, Mark gives up his voyeuristic vigil and hustles to the crash site. He finds Annie and is taken with her beauty and alluring ways. He befriends the fetching alien, and together they begin a struggle to assimilate her people into a new and unfamiliar world. Acceptance does not come easy. They encounter frightened citizens, hostile military forces, the media, and the President of the United States, all of whom treat the visitors and their advanced technology as a threatening alien invasion. Annie Somewhere is a poignant story of social and technical differences, inept government interference, and the struggles of a lone visitor to save her civilization from extinction. The story delves into the unlikely pairing of a star-struck teenage boy and a beautiful and mesmerizing alien woman as they set out to overcome human prejudice and find acceptance for a culture of gentle and caring alien beings. Keywords: young adult, science fiction, space opera, space invaders

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this beautiful and haunting debut novel in verse, called “a tender piece on connectedness” in a starred review from Kirkus Reviews, a Japanese-American girl struggles with the loneliness of being caught between two worlds when the tragedy of 9/11 strikes an ocean away. Eleven-year-old Ema has always been of two worlds—her father’s Japanese heritage and her mother’s life in America. She’s spent summers in California for as long as she can remember, but this year she and her mother are staying with her grandparents in Japan as they await the arrival of Ema’s baby sibling. Her mother’s pregnancy has been tricky, putting everyone on edge, but Ema’s heart is singing—finally, there will be someone else who will understand what it’s like to belong and not belong at the same time. But Ema’s good spirits are muffled by her grandmother who is cold, tightfisted, and quick to reprimand her for the slightest infraction. Then, when their stay is extended and Ema must go to a new school, her worries of not belonging grow. And when the tragedy of 9/11 strikes, Ema, her parents, and the world watch as the twin towers fall… As her mother grieves for her country across the ocean—threatening the safety of her pregnancy—and her beloved grandfather falls ill, Ema feels more helpless and hopeless than ever. And yet, surrounded by tragedy, Ema sees for the first time the tender side of her grandmother, and the reason for the penny-pinching and sternness make sense—her grandmother has been preparing so they could all survive the worst. Dipping and soaring, Somewhere Among is the story of one girl’s search for identity, a sense of peace, and the discovery that hope can indeed rise from the ashes of disaster.

Book excerpt: Beth Luxenberg was an only child. Or so everyone thought. Six months after Beth's death, her secret emerged. It had a name: Annie. Praise for Annie's Ghosts "Annie's Ghosts is one of the most remarkable books I have ever read . . . From mental institutions to the Holocaust, from mothers and fathers to children and childhood, with its mysteries, sadness, and joy--this book is one emotional ride."--Bob Woodward, author of The War Within and State of Denial "Steve Luxenberg sleuths his family's hidden history with the skills of an investigative reporter, the instincts of a mystery writer, and the sympathy of a loving son. His rediscovery of one lost woman illuminates the shocking fate of thousands of Americans who disappeared just a generation ago."--Tony Horwitz, author of A Voyage Long and Strange and Confederates in the Attic "I started reading within minutes of picking up this book, and was instantly mesmerized. It's a riveting detective story, a moving family saga, an enlightening if heartbreaking chapter in the history of America's treatment of people born with what we now call special needs." -- Deborah Tannen, author of You Just Don't Understand and You're Wearing That "This is a memoir that pushes the journalistic envelope . . . Luxenberg has written a fascinating personal story as well as a report on our communal response to the mentally ill." -- Helen Epstein, author of Where She Came From and Children of the Holocaust "A wise, affecting new memoir of family secrets and posthumous absolution." -- The Washington Post "Annie's Ghosts will resonate for many, whether the chords have to do with family secrets, the Depression, memories of a thriving Detroit, the Holocaust's horrors, or the immigrant experience." -- The Detroit Free Press

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This books shares the heartbreaks and struggles of a grandma and others who were involved in the rescue of a little girl from sexual abuse and neglect. Once the government agency "Child and Family Protective Services" (C&FPS) got involved, following the liberal laws of today to keep families together no matter what, the child was put through more misery and neglect, which dragged on for more than a year and a half before finally a decision on her future was made. This book will show how drug addiction destroys lives and how it can turn good people into useless, double-crossing, selfish and uncaring individuals. What made this tragedy even worse and frustrating was the fact that no one could help. Even the lawyers who were hired to get the child out of a bad environment, even though they tried when they first got involved, were hampered and restricted by the liberal laws that are on the books. They seemed to be more on Welfare's side than the client's who paid them for their services. It is hoped that the lawmakers of today will realize that some of our laws are too liberal and need to be changed to make this country safer for "everybody". These liberal laws were created shortly after WW II to protect people from discrimination that were different in culture, ethnicity, behaviorally or of physical or mental impairments, nowadays called the "Vulnerable". But these liberal laws do not help the "Vulnerable", on the contrary, they hamper their treatment, but they hurt the law-abiding, taxpaying citizens. This book may help people that find themselves in a similar situation where a child needs to be rescued from sexual abuse and neglect. Sexual abuse on children should be recognized as the big problem that it is, instead it is largely being ignored by the judicial system. An article in the New York Times on 10/5/2014 called "pedophilia" a disorder, not a crime, an opinion of one very liberal journalist. It may be a disorder, but it definitely is a crime as well and should be punished as such, to prevent pedophiles from acting out on their unnatural behaviors. 20% of American children, about 200,000 per year are victims of sexual molestation, many times perpetrated by family members or friends. These children may suffer for the rest of their lives. The American Psychiatric Association states that pedophiles have been shown to have lower IQs than the general population and are shorter in height. Many are left-handed and some have been sexually abused as children themselves. This automatically gets them included into the category of the "Vulnerable" and they enjoy special treatment by the judicial system and some of them go unpunished, to the detriment of the children.

Five old friends. One glamping weekend. A storm that will change everything. Max and Annie Kingsley have left the London rat race with their twelve-year-old son to set up a glamping site in the wilds of Cornwall. Eager for a dry run ahead of their opening, they invite three old university friends and their families for a long-needed reunion. But the festivities soon go awry as tensions arise between the children (and subsequently their parents), explosive secrets come to light, and a sudden storm moves in, cutting them off from help as one in the group disappears. Moving between the police investigation, a hospital room, and the catastrophic weekend, The Search Party is a propulsive and twisty destination thriller about the tenuous bonds of friendship and the lengths parents will go to protect their children.

Book excerpt: This is a new and revised edition of a book which has had a major impact upon the social sciences and public political debate. Anthony Elliott and Charles Lemert's THE NEW INDIVIDUALISM inspired readers with the dramatic suggestion that 'the reinvention craze' - from self-help and therapy culture to management restructurings and corporate downsizings - is central to a 'new individualism' sweeping the globe. Giving particular attention to the narratives of people seeking to define anew their lives in an age of globalization, the authors contend that an endless hunger for instant change and relentless emphasis on self-reinvention is fundamental to grasping the disorientating effects of the new individualism. This edition contains a substantial new Introduction in which Elliott and Lemert reply to some of the standard criticisms made of the theory of the new individualism, and also addresses the escalation of new individualist thinking in the wake of recent global crises.

Book excerpt: No conviction, no reward. It's 1868 and the gold rush is spreading across the wild west of New South Wales, bringing with it a new breed of colonial rogue - bushrangers. A world far removed from hardworking farm girl, Annie Bird, and her sleepy village on the outskirts of Sydney. But when a cruel stroke of fortune sees Annie orphaned and outcast, she is forced to head for the goldfields in search of her grandfather, a legendary tracker. Determined and dangerously naive, she sets off with little but a swag full of hope - and is promptly robbed of it on the road. Her cries for help attract another sort of rogue: Jem Fox, the waster son of a wealthy silversmith, who's already in trouble with the law - up to his neatly trimmed eyebrows in gambling debts. And now he does something much worse. He 'borrows' a horse and rides after the thieves, throwing Annie over the saddle as he goes. What follows is a breakneck gallop through the Australian bush, a tale of mistaken identity and blind bigotry, of two headstrong opposites tossed together by fate, their lives entwined by a quest to get back home - and the irresistible forces of love. 'Kim Kelly seems to understand the sounds and scents of the country' - The West Australian 'colourful, evocative and energetic' - Sydney Morning Herald 'impressive research' - Daily Telegraph 'Why can't more people write like this?' - The Age

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Callaway Cousins are back with three full-length novels featuring firefighter romance, page-turning mystery, touching family drama, and intriguing suspense! Don't miss this special collection! ONCE YOU'RE MINE "ONCE YOU'RE MINE is a perfect blend of intrigue, suspense, action and smoldering romance and author Barbara Freethy has outdone herself once again!" RJ Firefighter Dylan Callaway is no coward when it comes to running into burning buildings but running into love with a beautiful and seriously annoying brunette is another story. Dylan first met Tori Hayden in high school when she was the irritating little sister of one of his best friends. Ten years later, Tori is a determined news reporter, who believes Dylan holds the key to solving a mysterious fire that may be part of a cover-up for murder. Tori would have rather worked with anyone other than the ruggedly sexy Dylan, who had been the star of many of her teenaged fantasies, but she needs help to get to the truth and to get justice for someone she loved. Sparks fly as Dylan and Tori put out one fire only to start another one—one that might consume them both. CAN'T LET IT GO "Wow! Griffin and Annie's story is full of mystery, lies, danger, fun, and lots of chemistry. Everything I love in a Callaway book." Lisa Talented graphic artist and animator Annie Callaway has been commissioned by a Hollywood studio to create the next superhero blockbuster movie, but a bout of creative block has Annie searching the Southern California beach scene for inspiration. A local Irish bar in an old train depot, run by the ruggedly attractive and somewhat mysterious Griffin Hale, piques her interest, and she finds herself weaving fantasies about not only Griffin but also the quirky characters who work there. The last thing Griffin Hale needs at his bar is a nosy artist looking for personal stories to turn into movie plots. He has carefully cultivated a scene of complete normalcy for people who need it more than Annie could possibly imagine, and it's his job to protect them. But the beautiful redhead with the compelling green eyes is difficult to turn away. Annie's fantasy world where good always conquers evil is not the life that Griffin has lived, and he can't help but think she'll never be satisfied with anyone less than a superhero. After a string of bad relationships, Annie willingly admits that most real men don't live up to her muscle-bound, cape-wearing protectors of the world, but when her stubborn curiosity propels her into a danger she never expected, she begins to realize that some heroes work in the dark…and a man who fights for you is a man worth fighting for. While Griffin is determined to keep Annie alive, he's not at all convinced he can give her the happily-ever-after she's looking for. But then some stories take an unexpected turn… SECRETS WE KEEP "Another fabulous story—a mystery to solve, danger and romance all wrapped together. If you're not already a fan of Barbara Freethy, this story is sure to make you one." – Susan D., Goodreads When firefighter Hunter Callaway makes a grisly discovery during a scorching fire at the house of his former high school sweetheart, everything he thought he knew about his past is now in question. The girl he'd loved, the one who'd broken his heart when she'd run away with another guy, might not have been who he thought she was. The last thing Cassidy Ellison ever wanted to do was revisit her past. But she's suddenly a suspect in a terrible crime, and while she might be able to put off the police, there's no running away from Hunter Callaway—not again. The boy of her dreams is now a man—an impatient, angry, demanding man who wants answers, some of which she has vowed never to speak. Staying silent has kept her alive, but now her secrets might not only take her life, but also Hunter's. As determined as Hunter is to make her talk, someone else is just as determined to keep her quiet… The Callaway Family series offers romance, mystery and family drama in each standalone novel, and the books include some of your favorite storylines: alpha heroes, firefighter romance, girl next door, love at first sight, enemies to lovers, opposites attract, grumpy sunshine, meet cute, instalove, and second chance at love. Each book stands on its own. No cliffhangers!
