Book excerpt: This paper summarizes a cooperative research program between the USDA Forest Service, Forest Products Laboratory (FPL), in Madison, Wisconsin, and Forintek Canada Corp. in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. This research program provided detailed creep--rupture and some creep information for composite panel products. Commercially produced plywood, oriented strandboard (OSB), and minimally aligned waferboard were tested to identify nine mills (three for each product) that produced panels with a range of flexural creep performance. The three plywood, three OSB, and three waferboard products (nine products total, one from each mill) were then tested to provide information on their duration of load (DOL) and creep performance. Large panel specimens were subjected to both rampload and constant-load tests under one environmental condition. The constant-load results provided conventional or deterministic DOL factors that compared favorably with National Design Specifications recommended for adjusting lumber design strength properties under dry service conditions. Ramp-load specimen data generally indicated a lower rate of damage accumulation than did data for constant-load specimens. Creep tests at two low constant-load levels were also performed on large specimens under three environmental conditions for a 6-month period. Those results suggested that present deterministic creep factors in panel design practice might be acceptable for plywood under the influence of relatively severe conditions, for OSB in moderate conditions, and for waferboard in dry service environmental conditions.

Book excerpt: In the as-produced condition the room temperature strength (approx. 6 GPa) of Textron Specialty Materials' 50 microns CVD SiC fiber represents the highest value thus far obtained for commercially produced polycrystalline SiC fibers. To understand whether this strength can be maintained after composite processing conditions, high temperature studies were performed on the effects of time, stress, and environment on 1400 deg. C tensile creep strain and stress rupture on as-produced, chemically vapor deposited SiC fibers. Creep strain results were consistent, allowing an evaluation of time and stress effects. Test environment had no influence on creep strain but I hour annealing at 1600 deg. C in argon gas significantly reduced the total creep strain and increased the stress dependence. This is attributed to changes in the free carbon morphology and its distribution within the CVD SiC fiber. For the as-produced and annealed fibers, strength at 1400 deg. C was found to decrease from a fast fracture value of 2 GPa to a 100-hr rupture strength value of 0. 8 GPa. In addition a loss of fast fracture strength from 6 GPa is attributed to thermally induced changes in the outer carbon coating and microstructure. Scatter in rupture times made a definitive analysis of environmental and annealing effects on creep strength difficult. Goldsby, J. C. and Yun, H. M. and DiCarlo, J. A. This book was released on 2018-08-14 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An experimental investigation of the mechanical properties and microstructure of an aluminum matrix/polycrystalline alumina fiber composite material is discussed. The effects of fabrication, isothermal exposure (up to 10,000 hours at 590 K), thermal cycling (6000 cycles between 200 K and 590 K), fatigue (1,000,000 tension-tension cycles) were determined by mechanical testing and metallurgical analysis. The fabrication process severely degraded the fiber strength by reducing the alumina to a nonstoichiometric form and quenching in the resultant vacancies and stress fields. However, isothermal exposure, thermal cycling, and fatigue cycling all restored the fiber strength by enhancing vacancy annihilation. Comparison of the as-fabricated material with other aerospace materials shows that it is an attractive candidate for select applications. Long duration isothermal exposure weakened the matrix by overaging and through the diffusional loss of lithium to a surface reaction forming lithium carbonate. Thermal cycling initiated cracks in the matrix and fibers. Tension-tension fatigue cycling caused no apparent damage to the as-fabricated material but in fact, strengthened it to the rule-of-mixtures value. Fatigue cycling after thermal exposure did have a cumulative damage effect. Olsen, G. C. Langley Research Center NASA-TP-1795, L-14074 RTOP 506-53-23-01...

Book excerpt: Sintered aluminum oxide materials were formed using commercial methods from mechanically mixed powders of nano-and micrometer alumina. The powders were consolidated at 1500 and 1600 C with 3.2 and 7.2 ksi applied stress in argon. The conventional micrometer sized powders failed to consolidate. While 100 percent nanometer-sized alumina and its mixture with the micrometer powders achieved less than 99 percent density. Preliminary high temperature creep behavior indicates no super-plastic strains. However high strains (less than 0.65 percent) were generated in the nanometer powder, due to cracks and linked voids initiated by cavitation. Goldsby, Jon C.
