Book excerpt: Described by Seamus Heaney as `one of the great publishing events of the decade', The Collected Letters of W. B. Yeats is redefining the territory of modern literary history. Covering a formative period in Yeats's political career, and the beginning of his theatrical involvement, Volume II (1896-1900) is indispensable to anyone interested in modern poetry, Irish drama, and cultural history. Letter by letter Yeat's private concerns, artistic quarrels and exhausting political life are revealed. Rich and readable notes provide a narrative of these years, explaining allusions, and setting the correspondence in its cultural and political contexts, as well as relating it to the emergence of Yeats's canon.
Book Synopsis Scalar Verb Classes : Scalarity, Thematic Roles, and Arguments in the Estonian Aspectual Lexicon by : Anne Tamm
Download or read book Scalar Verb Classes : Scalarity, Thematic Roles, and Arguments in the Estonian Aspectual Lexicon written by Anne Tamm and published by Firenze University Press. This book was released on 2011 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph discusses scalar verb classes. It tests theories of linguistic form and meaning, arguments and thematic roles, using Estonian data. The analyses help to understand the aspectual structure of Estonian. In Estonian, transitive verbs fall into aspectual classes based on the type of case-marking of objects and adjuncts. The book relates the morphosyntactic frames of verbs to properties typically associated with adjectives and nouns: scalarity and boundedness. Verbs are divided according to how their aspect is composed. Some verbs lexicalize a scale, which can be bounded either lexically or compositionally. Aspectual composition involves the unification of features. Compositionally derived structures differ according to which of the aspectually relevant dimensions are bounded.

Book Synopsis Linguistic Variation Issues: Case and Agreement in Northern Russian Participial Constructions by : Civardi, Antonio
Download or read book Linguistic Variation Issues: Case and Agreement in Northern Russian Participial Constructions written by Civardi, Antonio and published by Firenze University Press. This book was released on 2016-10-12 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study offers a novel approach to a longstanding problem in Slavic Linguistics, the formal representation of the Northern Russian participial constructions in -n(o)/-t(o). Unlike previous works, the methodological stance adopted by the author focuses on singling out all the relevant patterns of variation and on pursuing a unified explanation for them. The key to the solution of the puzzle is the idea that the participial affix -n-/-t- and the agreement inflections are not just pieces of morphology inserted post-syntactically, but true heads that enter the computation and are able to manipulate the argumental roles of the verb and to check the EPP. The author’s proposal is properly framed in the context of current debate on interlanguage variation.
Book Synopsis Builders of My Soul by : Brian Arkins
Download or read book Builders of My Soul written by Brian Arkins and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 1990 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To Yeats, as well as to Eliot, Pound, Joyce, and other major writers, as Erich Auerbach put it in Mimesis, "Antiquity means liberation and a broadening of horizons, not in any sense a new limitation or servitude." That is why Greco-Roman themes can be endlessly stimulating, why Yeats could call the Greek and Roman writers "the builders of my soul." Brian Arkin's thematic consideration of Yeat's subject matter under philosophy, myth, religion, history, literature, visual art, and Byzantium, allows us to see coherently how Yeats exploited this material and how, especially in his middle and later periods, he transformed and metamorphosed subject matter from Homer, Phidias, Plato, Plotinus, and Sophocles, and from the myths of Dionysus, Helen of Troy, Leda, and Zeus, to exemplify his central preoccupations. Irish Literary Studies Series No. 32.

This book was released on 2016-08-30 with total page 275 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The years 1676 and 1774 marked two turning points in the social and legal treatment of madness in England. In 1676, London’s Bethlehem Hospital expanded in grand new premises, and in 1774 the Madhouses Act attempted to limit confinement of the insane. This study explores almost a century of the English history of madness through the texts of five poets who were considered mentally troubled according to contemporary standards: James Carkesse, Anne Finch, William Collins, Christopher Smart and William Cowper were hospitalized, sequestered or exiled from society. Their works cope with representations of insanity, medical definitions or practices, imputed illness, and the judging eye of the ‘sane other’, shedding new light on the dis/continuities in the notion of madness of this period.

Book Synopsis History of the Italian Agricultural Landscape by : Emilio Sereni
Download or read book History of the Italian Agricultural Landscape written by Emilio Sereni and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2014-07-14 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emilio Sereni's classic work is now available in an English language edition. History of the Italian Agricultural Landscape is a synthesis of the agricultural history of Italy in its economic, social, and ecological context, from antiquity to the mid-twentieth century. From his perspective in the Italian tradition of cultural Marxism, Sereni guides the reader through the millennial changes that have affected the agriculture and ecology of the regions of Italy, as well as through the successes and failures of farmers and technicians in antiquity, the middle ages, the Renaissance, and the Industrial Revolution. In this sweeping historical survey, he describes attempts by successive generations to adapt Italy's natural environment for the purposes of agriculture and to respond to its changing ecological problems. History of the Italian Agricultural Landscape first appeared in 1961. At the time of its publication it was a pathbreaking work, parallel in its importance for Italy to Marc Bloc's masterwork of 1931, The Original Characteristics of French Rural History. Sereni invented the concept of the historical "agricultural landscape": an interdisciplinary characterization of rural life involving economic and social history, linguistics, archeology, art history, and ecological studies. Originally published in 1997. Book Synopsis The Reception of W. B. Yeats in Europe by : Klaus Peter Jochum
Download or read book The Reception of W. B. Yeats in Europe written by Klaus Peter Jochum and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-02-14 with total page 1073 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The intellectual and cultural impact of British and Irish writers cannot be assessed without reference to their reception in European countries. These essays, prepared by an international team of scholars, critics and translators, record the ways in which W. B. Yeats has been translated, evaluated and emulated in different national and linguistic areas of continental Europe. There is a remarkable split between the often politicized reception in Eastern European countries but also Spain on the one hand, and the more sober scholarly response in Western Europe on the other. Yeats's Irishness and the pre-eminence of his lyrical work have posed continuous challenges. Three further essays describe the widely divergent reactions to Yeats in his native Ireland, during his lifetime and up to the most recent years.

Book Synopsis The Revolution of the Saints by : Michael Walzer
Download or read book The Revolution of the Saints written by Michael Walzer and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 1982 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Revolution of the Saints is a study, both historical and sociological, of the radical political response of the Puritans to disorder. It interprets and analyzes Calvinism as the first modern expression of an unremitting determination to transform on the basis of an ideology the existing political and moral order. Michael Walzer examines in detail the circumstances and ideological options of the Puritan intelligentsia and gentry. He sees Puritanism, in sharp contrast to some generally accepted views, as the political theory of intellectuals and gentlemen attempting to create a new government and society.
