Book excerpt: Economic analysis of beef cattle production has been limited by the inability to fully describe the underlying production process. Except for confined feeding of cattle, beef cattle production is the process of growing cattle who consume forages. The animal and the forage possess attributes of both factors and products of production. The production of forage constitutes one production process, animal growth is another production process, and reproduction by female animals is a third production process. Cattle production involves all three processes in such a manner that each influences the outcome of the other. Each process is itself complex and analysis is further complicated when all three are considered simultaneously.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dairy farms are complex systems comprised of interrelated components and managed with sophisticated procedures. To achieve production and environmental goals, dairy farm decision-makers need to be better informed on the uncertainty of the dairy farm system. A simulation model of the whole farm system might be useful to virtually test management strategies prior to taking operational actions. The Ruminant Farm System model, RuFaS, is being developed as an open-source and highly flexible probabilistic whole-farm simulation model. This thesis introduces a dynamic and stochastic Monte Carlo simulation model of the animal life cycle as a submodule of RuFaS. This RuFaS submodule is intended to provide an extensible framework for the animal and herd simulations, allowing further improvement and expansion. The animal life-cycle submodule simulates the daily growth, production, reproduction, and culling of individual dairy animals and the dynamics of the herd as a group of animals. Each procedure is informed by established scientific literature and industry standards to represent current farm characteristics. A case study examining the use of sexed and beef semen techniques on dairy farms has been conducted using the submodel. The results indicated that switching from conventional semen to a combination of sexed and beef semen was economically advantageous, as the benefits in milk and calf revenue outweighed the additional expenses of breeding and semen. To obtain more precise production simulation results, we quantified the parameters determining the shape and magnitude of current lactation curves using mixed-effects models on a dataset of over 8 million lactations, each with at least 10 test day recordings. Individual daily targeted milk production estimations for the RuFaS model were to be based on the mixed model projections. Furthermore, the effects of seasonal production changes and long-term trends in milk and milk component productivity were quantified for 17 states with at least 100 thousand lactation records via time-series decomposing and clustering. This time series analysis retrieved trend and seasonality characteristics from state clusters to inform RuFaS estimations of milk and milk component yields.

The interdisciplinary team of authors involved stresses the different approaches and the multi-faceted forms that rooftop farming may assume in any context. While rooftop farming experiences are sprouting all over the world the need for scientific evidence on the most suitable growing solutions, policies and potential benefits emerges. This volume brings together existing experiences as well as suggestions for planning future sustainable cities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the experience of the first volume, The World Association for Animal Production (WAAP) continues the publication of the Book of the Year series for the benefit of animal scientists and policy makers in the field of livestock systems. The WAAP asked the best known and significant animal scientists in the world to contribute to the preparation of this book. Following the success of the first volume of the series, the WAAP Book of the Year 2003, many authors from the six continents are contributing to this 2nd volume. The importance of this publication is to have already established a worldwide reference for the animal science and production sectors. There are the usual four sections that raised much interest in the previous volume of the series. The first section has six articles, describing the changing conditions of livestock systems in each of the six continents. The second section has more than twenty papers, describing the development of the many sectors in which the animal science field has been divided. The third section, dealing with contemporary issues, is declared by our readers to be the most interesting. It allows participating authors to describe current and significant issues important in these last years for the animal science and production sectors. The statistics produced in the previous volume are updated and enhanced with new figures in this book to form the fourth section. The papers included in this book speak clearly of the development in the last twelve months in the livestock systems worldwide. Major space is also devoted to the list of references from where every author can start to deepen his knowledge. This book is essential for libraries that want their readers to be easily updated. Also scientists, policy makers and scientific writers, who need, to enhance their competence, to have the most practical way of knowing what is going on in the world in the field of livestock science and production will find this book of great value.

This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study has developed a methodology that builds on the approach to measuring agricultural research returns suggested by Alston et al (1995). We have integrated a herd model to measure the potential size of impact of a new technology, GIS, to predict where this impacts is likely to be felt, and the economic surplus model to estimate some of the costs of trypanosomosis, the potential benefits of controlling it, and potential returns to vaccine research. The advantage of this approach is that it uses field data and GIS analysis to determine where and how much impact research will have on livestock productivity, rather than 'guesstimates' by researchers, as has often been done in previous studies of returns to agricultural research. It is an approach, however, that requires much data and the type of information that is still scarce in many developing countries. This includes evidence of the productivity impacts of a given livestock technology at the herd, rather than individual animal level, and access to GIS data at the lowest adminstrative level possible (e.g. district). Ideally, household level survey data are used to complement the GIS data and verify the recommendation domain. Thus this approach will be enhanced in future analyses by the availability of a wider range of data collected at the household level from different livestock production systems to examine more closely the question 'Impact on whom?'
