Book excerpt: In this book, your children will begin exploring the dynamics of flight and animal classification, understanding why the design we see in these incredible creatures points us to our Creator God. Then, get ready for the exciting adventure of learning about birds. Your children will learn how to attract various bird species to your yard and identify them by looking at their special physical characteristics, diverse nests, and interesting domestic practices. They will also learn the anatomy and the glorious design that enables birds to do remarkable things. The text contains actual experiments on the preferences and habits of the birds your children see. These experiments further enrich the learning experience. After becoming amateur ornithologists, your children will explore the world of chiropterology, which is the study of bats. They will be able to intelligently share with others the value of bats in our world while exposing the misconceptions that most people have regarding these docile creatures of the night. Your children will then investigate entomology, the study of insects. They will learn to scientifically classify insects they find in their yard by a simple glance at their wings and other important characteristics. In addition to designing experiments with flies, crickets, darkling moths, and caterpillars, they will also learn how to attract and catch insects for scientific study. When your children complete this study of zoology, they will never view nature in the same way again. Their eyes will be open to the different species that live in their midst, enjoying and understanding nature to the fullest. Vacations will become educational experiences as they notice birds and insects inhabiting the areas they visit. By learning to keep a field journal, they will be able to notice unusual circumstances or sudden increases in bird or insect populations. They will become true scientists as they come to know nature and the fascinating world that God created. Grades K-6.

It is therefore to such as have the guidance of the young, that these lines are addressed, in the hope of proving to them that this study is not merely pleasant, but useful - nay, important in the last degree. It is the sacred office of the true educator to arouse the inquiring faculties of the young mind - to develop every thought and feeling; and can this be better done than by directing the attention to the wondrous wisdom displayed in the works of Nature, and to the infinite mercy by which each animal, however lowly, lives, moves, and fulfils its purpose in the great scheme of the creation? For does not every creature that treads the earth, every bird that flies above us, every fish that wends its way through the waters, every insect that sports so gaily in the air, inspire us with admiration of Almighty wisdom and care? and the thoughts of wonder at the creation, will lead to feelings of gratitude to the Creator - from nature, to nature's God. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Animal Biology This volume is intended as an introduction to the elements of animal biology for the use of students in the high school. The cut-and-dried method of exposition which is so commonly found in text - books and which so frequently deprives them of all traces of stimulating quality has been avoided so far as was deemed compatible with the presentation of such subject matter as a text-book should contain. Although the book would best fulfil its purpose if read in connection with laboratory work, I have not included directions for such work, partly be cause it would add considerably to the bulk of the volume, but chiefly because so many teachers nowadays prefer to make laboratory outlines of their own. The order in which the main topics are treated is essen tially like that which is followed in several of the best recent text-books. The general experience of teachers of biology has shown it to be eminently desirable that the student should possess a general knowledge of the animal kingdom as a preparation for the study of physiology. The section on the elements of physiology has therefore been placed after the part devoted to a survey of the principal groups of animals. Rather more than the usual amount of attention is given to the role of bacteria in causing disease, and to the way in which diseases are spread and how they may be avoided.
