Book Synopsis Soft Rock Mechanics and Engineering by : Milton Kanji
Download or read book Soft Rock Mechanics and Engineering written by Milton Kanji and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-24 with total page 753 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a practical reference guide to soft rock mechanics for engineers and scientists. Written by recognized experts, it will benefit professionals, contractors, academics, researchers and students working on rock engineering projects in the fields of civil engineering, mining and construction engineering. Soft Rock Mechanics and Engineering covers a specific subject of great relevance in Rock Mechanics – and one that is directly connected to the design of geotechnical structures under difficult ground conditions. The book addresses practical issues related to the geomechanical properties of these types of rock masses and their characterization, while also discussing advances regarding in situ investigation, safety, and monitoring of geotechnical structures in soft rocks. Lastly, it presents important case histories involving tunnelling, dam foundations, coal and open pit mines and landslides.

Book Synopsis Sulfate Karst of Perm Region (Russia) by : Nikolay Maksimovich
Download or read book Sulfate Karst of Perm Region (Russia) written by Nikolay Maksimovich and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-11-14 with total page 165 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book provides a characteristic of sulfate karst, the features of its distribution and development in the Perm region, based on their own research and generalization of data accumulated in recent years. An updated zoning of the territory is given, partly based on the use of GIS technologies. This book also offers a detailed description of areas with characteristics of geological and hydrogeological conditions for the development of karst and karst phenomena. Besides, it also provides a detailed description of a number of caves, information about specially protected natural areas associated with sulfate karst and new unique objects that need protection. The book describes the influence of karst on economic activity and the ecological situation. The publication is intended for geologists, geographers, ecologists, karst scientists, speleologists, local historians, teachers and students of specialties related to earth sciences, as well as a wide range of karst and cave enthusiasts.
Book Synopsis Dams and Reservoirs in Evaporites by : Petar Milanović
Download or read book Dams and Reservoirs in Evaporites written by Petar Milanović and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-05-25 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book shares essential insights on evaporites and their effects on dams and reservoirs. The intensity of the solution and suffusion process in evaporites (gypsum and salt) is much greater than the solution of carbonates, and evaporites are particularly vulnerable at dam and reservoir sites. Moreover, the presence of evaporites in the vicinity of dams or reservoirs often leads to serious problems: numerous dams in countries around the world (e.g. China, Germany, Iran, Iraq, Peru, Russia, Spain, the Unites States, and Venezuela) have been affected by evaporite dissolution problems. Several of these dams were seriously endangered or ultimately abandoned, even though the best available engineering prevention and remediation practices were applied. Conventional geotechnical methods based on treating the underground (e.g. grout curtains) or surface (e.g. protective blankets) were not successful. This book presents and analyzes revealing case studies in this regard. To improve geotechnical remediation in connection with preventing seepage from reservoirs situated in evaporites, particularly in gypsum, it puts forward a new chemical solution that, after painstaking laboratory testing, was successfully applied in the field.
Book Synopsis Accommodation zones and transfer zones; the regional segmentation of the Basin and Range Province by : James E. Faulds
Download or read book Accommodation zones and transfer zones; the regional segmentation of the Basin and Range Province written by James E. Faulds and published by Geological Society of America. This book was released on 1998-01-01 with total page 269 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume focuses on the geometry, kinematic development, and origin of regional segmentation structures within the basin and range province of Western North America. Contributions range from analysis of individiual structures to broad regional syntheses, including a map of basin and range structures and tilt domains. Several papers discuss the implications of regional segmentation structures in assessing seismic hazards, hydrocarbon and mineral resources, and ground-water supplies.
