This book was released on 1991 with total page 554 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At first sight the topic dealt with in this book may seem very technical and specialized. However it aims at presenting one very fundamental aspect of modern nuclear physics. At low incident energies, the collision of two nuclei is governed by the rearrangement of individual nucleons within the average mean field created by all of them. At high energies, the wavelength of nucleons is so short that they essentially experience individual nucleon-nucleon collisions without much influence of collective nuclear effects. Very interesting and enlightening phenomena occur when the velocity of the colliding nuclei is of the same order of magnitude as the velocity of nucleons within the nuclei. Up until recently beams of nuclei accelerated to the Fermi energy and above were not available to allow for an efficient study of that transition regime. Within a few years spectacular progress has been made to clarify the main issues, formulate the operating concepts and put order in the growing body of experimental results. The contributions in this book present the current status of this new field. They go from the study of the thermodynamics of bound nuclear systems to some remarkable signatures of the collision process. Some new features of nuclear structure which are revealed in collisions at the Fermi energy are also presented.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a collection of reviews of some of the recent developments in nuclear physics research at intermediate energies from across the globe. It especially focuses on the most essential aspects, such as multifragmentation and associated phenomena in nuclear collisions, with the incident energy region between a few MeV and several hundreds of MeV/nucleon. The topic of the book—multifragmentation—was chosen based on the fact that all heavy-ion collisions revolve around a fragmenting system, which is also thought to have a link to phase transitions. One unique and valuable dimension of this book is that it has brought together the research of several experts working in the field of intermediate energy heavy-ion collisions in various renowned laboratories of the world. It provides a thorough review of the recent developments in various related phenomena, especially multifragmentation, observed at the intermediate-energy range, both theoretically and experimentally. It extensively discusses the concept of nuclear symmetry energy, which is important for the nuclear physics and astrophysics communities. In addition, the book identifies potential research directions and technologies that will drive future innovations. It will serve as a valuable reference for a larger audience, including students who wish to pursue a career in nuclear physics and astrophysics.

Book excerpt: Ions are atoms or molecules stripped of their electrons, so they can be accelerated by electric fields. They can be made to hit each other with low energy, intermediate energy, high energy, or very high energy; each energy range seeks to investigate different aspects of hadronic physics. Intermediate-energy heavy ion collisions explore the nuclei far from stability valley, the incompressibility of nuclear matter, the liquid-gas phase transition in nuclear environment, the symmetry energy far from the normal density, and other phenomena. This has been an active field of research for last four decades. This is a book for entrants in the field. It is suitable as a companion book in a graduate course. For practitioners in the field it will be useful as a reference.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intermediate-Energy Nuclear Physics is devoted to discussing the interaction between hadrons with nuclei, which leads to the emission of particles during an intranuclear cascade and subsequent decay of a highly excited residual nucleus. Experimental data and the methods and results of the calculation of probabilities of various processes initiated by intermediate-energy hadrons in nuclei are set forth and discussed. The potential for obtaining information on the structure and properties of nuclei by comparing experimental data with theoretical results is analyzed. New issues, such as analytic methods for the solution of kinetic equations describing the cascade, nuclear absorption of hadrons from bound states of hadronic atoms, interaction of antinucleons with nuclei, multifragmentation of highly excited residual nuclei, and polarization phenomena, are discussed in detail. The book also demonstrates hadron-nucleus interactions that bridge the gap between low-energy and heavy ions physics. It is an interesting reference for nuclear physicists and other researchers interested in the analysis of problems associated with the evolution of the early (hot) universe, neutron stars and supernovas, after-burning of radioactive waste in nuclear energy installations, and electronuclear energy breeding.

Book excerpt: This text book deals with many issues of nuclear reactions in contest with the heavy-ion collisions at intermediate energies. The main issues discussed in the book are Multifragmentation, elliptical flow, nuclear stopping and symmetry energy. These phenomenas can be compared with the happenings in the universe such as Supernova Explosion, Quark Gluon Plasma, Liquid Gas Phase transition, which were the basic processes at the time of expansion of the universe. Ultimately, the study of these phenomenas has made this book highly important and interesting for the researchers as well as master students working in the field of intermediate energies. In addition to this, the determination of symmetry energy for asymmetric nuclear matter, which is the burning topic in the present day research, is also explored in the present version of the book. In conclusion, the matter published in the book will give the readers the detailed analysis of the nature of the hadronic matter, which is the ultimate goal of all the theoretical as well as experimental nuclear physics collaborations throughout the world.

It is relevant for students who will work on topics being explored at RHIC and the LHC. In the first part, the basic principles of these studies are covered including kinematics, cross sections (including the quark model and parton distribution functions), the geometry of nuclear collisions, thermodynamics, hydrodynamics and relevant aspects of lattice gauge theory at finite temperature. The second part covers some more specific probes of heavy-ion collisions at these energies: high mass thermal dileptons, quarkonium and hadronization. The second part also serves as extended examples of concepts learned in the previous part. Both parts contain examples in the text as well as exercises at the end of each chapter. - Designed for students and newcomers to the field- Focuses on hard probes and QCD- Covers all aspects of high energy heavy-ion physics- Includes worked example problems and exercises
