Book excerpt: This book investigates and describes the phenomenon of anti white, and particularly anti Anglo, racism. It investigates the various other forms of hostile discrimination and racism and how they are managed and perceived. This is then compared to the hostile discrimination against white, and Anglo, populations. The history of the various types of discrimination are mapped out and a number of sociological terms are defined in order for the reader to better understand the subject. Several categories and sub categories of vilification, hostile discrimination and violence are laid out and extensive examples are given which demonstrate the different categories. Whilst Australian examples make up a majority, there are plenty of others from around the world and especially, the Anglosphere. There were, however, no shortage of other examples to use had this book been written in any other white or European nation. The book also investigates and discusses situations where racism can be, if not justified, then at least understood. Anglos are not treated as innocent victims in the text and instances of Anglo aggression show how racism and hostile discrimination are part of Anglo behaviour as they are a part of the behaviour of every other group of humans. Finally, the various groups which have had a hand in anti Anglo or anti white animus are identified and an attempt is made to discern the motivation and incentives which may have driven the various groups to oppose Anglo or white interests within white and/or European nations. The book concludes that Anglophobia, like all other forms of hostile discrimination, is harmful to the targeted group. Surprisingly however, it also harms other groups by degrading the Anglo majority which act as the national core. Attacks on the founding group have the consequence of degrading such essential principles as freedom of speech, freedom of association, the rule of law, equality of opportunity, democratic systems of Government, altruism, welfare and more. Anglos are therefore encouraged to stand up against the evils of Anglophobia but to do so with respect for the rights of others.

Book Synopsis Multicultural Nationalism by : Asifa M. Hussain
Download or read book Multicultural Nationalism written by Asifa M. Hussain and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2006-07-20 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the focus is on black or Asian minorities, Britain is frequently described as a multi-cultural state. But when the focus is on Scotland, England and Wales, Britain is also described as a multi-national state. Yet debates about multiculturalism and nationalism have been held in parallel without sharing even a common vocabulary. This book is a pioneering study of how multiculturalism interacts with multinationalism, especially within post-devolution Scotland. It gives equal attention to Scotland's largest 'visible' and 'invisible' minorities: ethnic Pakistanis (almost all of them Muslim) and English immigrants. Rising Scottish self-consciousness could have posed a challenge both these minorities. But in practice, potential problems have proved themselves to be solutions, integrating rather than alienating. In the eyes of the minorities, devolution has made Scots at once more proud and less xenophobic. Even English immigrants feel devolution has defused tensions, calmed frustrations, and forced Scots to blame themselves rather than others for their problems. Pakistanis have suffered increasing harassment - but they attribute that to 9/11 not to devolution. And Muslims adopt Scottish identities, Scottish attitudes, even Scottish nationalism - consciously or unconsciously using these as tools ofintegration. The book is based in part on large-scale surveys: of Pakistani and English minorities within Scotland, and of the majority populations in Scotland and England. But it is also based on systematic analysis of transcripts of focus-group discussions with minorities revealing the variety of opinion within minorities as well as the contrasts between them. In particular, it presents a unique account of how Scottish Muslims express their feelings in a time of crisis.

Download or read book The Sellout written by Paul Beatty and published by Farrar, Straus and Giroux. This book was released on 2015-03-03 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Man Booker Prize Winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award in Fiction Winner of the John Dos Passos Prize for Literature New York Times Bestseller Los Angeles Times Bestseller Named One of the 10 Best Books of the Year by The New York Times Book Review Named a Best Book of the Year by Newsweek, The Denver Post, BuzzFeed, Kirkus Reviews, and Publishers Weekly Named a "Must-Read" by Flavorwire and New York Magazine's "Vulture" Blog A biting satire about a young man's isolated upbringing and the race trial that sends him to the Supreme Court, Paul Beatty's The Sellout showcases a comic genius at the top of his game. It challenges the sacred tenets of the United States Constitution, urban life, the civil rights movement, the father-son relationship, and the holy grail of racial equality—the black Chinese restaurant. Born in the "agrarian ghetto" of Dickens—on the southern outskirts of Los Angeles—the narrator of The Sellout resigns himself to the fate of lower-middle-class Californians: "I'd die in the same bedroom I'd grown up in, looking up at the cracks in the stucco ceiling that've been there since '68 quake." Raised by a single father, a controversial sociologist, he spent his childhood as the subject in racially charged psychological studies. He is led to believe that his father's pioneering work will result in a memoir that will solve his family's financial woes. But when his father is killed in a police shoot-out, he realizes there never was a memoir. All that's left is the bill for a drive-thru funeral. Fueled by this deceit and the general disrepair of his hometown, the narrator sets out to right another wrong: Dickens has literally been removed from the map to save California from further embarrassment. Enlisting the help of the town's most famous resident—the last surviving Little Rascal, Hominy Jenkins—he initiates the most outrageous action conceivable: reinstating slavery and segregating the local high school, which lands him in the Supreme Court.
