Book excerpt: An entirely original account of Victoria's relationship with the Raj, which shows how India was central to the Victorian monarchy from as early as 1837 In this engaging and controversial book, Miles Taylor shows how both Victoria and Albert were spellbound by India, and argues that the Queen was humanely, intelligently, and passionately involved with the country throughout her reign and not just in the last decades. Taylor also reveals the way in which Victoria's influence as empress contributed significantly to India's modernization, both political and economic. This is, in a number of respects, a fresh account of imperial rule in India, suggesting that it was one of Victoria's successes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Making of Indian English Literature brings together seventeen well-researched essays of Subhendu Mund with a long introduction by the author historicising the development of the Indian writing in English while exploring its identity among the many appellations tagged to it. The volume demonstrates, contrary to popular perceptions, that before the official introduction of English education in India, Indians had already tried their hands in nearly all forms of literature: poetry, fiction, drama, essay, biography, autobiography, book review, literary criticism and travel writing. Besides translation activities, Indians had also started editing and publishing periodicals in English before 1835. Through archival research the author brings to discussion a number of unknown and less discussed texts which contributed to the development of the genre. The work includes exclusive essays on such early poets and writers as Kylas Chunder Dutt, Shoshee Chunder Dutt, Toru Dutt, Mirza Moorad Alee Beg, Krupabai Satthianadhan, Swami Vivekananda, H. Dutt, and Sita Chatterjee; and historiographical studies on the various aspects of the genre. The author also examines the strategies used by the early writers to indianise the western language and the form of the novel. The present volume also demonstrates how from the very beginning Indian writing in English had a subtle nationalist agenda and created a space for protest literature. The Making of Indian English Literature will prove an invaluable addition to the studies in Indian writing in English as a source of reference and motivation for further research. Please note: Taylor & Francis does not sell or distribute the Hardback in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Bhutan, Bangladesh and Sri Lanka.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Anglo-Indian Prize Poems Before the departure of the Prince of Wales for India, it became evident that the visit of His Royal Highness would greatly excite the Oriental imagination, and that many poems would be com posed in his honour. Foreseeing that these com positions would prove interesting, not only on account of their peculiar Oriental character, but also as spontaneous expressions of the sentiments and feelings of the educated classes in India towards the Royal Family, it was thought de sirable to offer prizes to the extent of One Hundred Guineas for a limited number of the best poems, in English or in any Indian language; upon the subject of The Royal Visit. To ao complish this the Proprietor of The Crown Per famery Company of London took the initiative, and his offer was extensively announced in this country and throughout Hindustan. The result is that over one hundred and fifty poems have been received - more than one-third of the number from Indian authors in Hindustani, Telugu, Tamil, Bengali, Sanskrit, Gujerati, Mahrz'itti, Hindi, etc. It may be added that these poems have been written by Indian Portuguese, Native Christians, Brahmans, Sudras, Rajpoots, Mahommedans, and various types. Book excerpt: Extensive historical research and a detailed examination of the English poetry written by Indians in the nineteenth century in its social, historical, and political contexts, reveals the engagement of the colonized with one of the implements of colonization the English language. This study shows how the intertextuality that existed between this body of verse and concurrent Orientalist scholarship on the ancient Indian heritage resulted, ultimately in a complex appropriation, by the Indians, of British scholarship on India for nationalist, literary, social, and personal issues, such as its anticipation of the formation of the modern Indian identity. A thorough examination of the correlation between the poetry and its background uncovers certain startling differences between current perceptions of colonial relations and actual historical records. For example, the common belief that English education was imposed upon the colonized is reversed through an examination of the Indians own initiative in this field long before the missionaries or Macaulay s famous minute. Similarly, the claim that all English education in India was a vehicle for the Christianizing of natives is refuted through the personal reminiscences of David Hare, eminent educationist, who opposed it vehemently. The author examines works by Henry Derozio, Kasiprasad Ghosh, Michael Madhusudhan Dutt, the Dutt family, and, in conclusion, the poems of Toru Dutt and Rabindranath Tagore. Refuting a simple equation of the exploitation of knowledge as power between the colonizer and the colonized, the author argues for a more nuanced approach, positing that the complexities of the situation meant also an active appropriation of Orientalist scholarship by Indians for their own ends: they tended to take just that which they found good and liked best . This would grant an agency to the colonial Indian subject which has so far gone unrecognized, and place a whole body of colonial verse in the situational flux of interchange and assimilation. This work asserts that it is time now to listen to what the orient made of its interaction with the West, and to lend an ear to what the colonized said. Rosinka Chaudhuri is a scholar of literary criticism and history from Oxford, who specializes in nineteenth-century Bengal. She is a Fellow at the Centre for Studies in Social Sciences, Calcutta. Her articles have appeared in several journals and anthologies.
