Book excerpt: The remarkable story of a North Carolina Cherokee community who avoided forced removal on the Trail of Tears During the 1838 forced Cherokee removal by the US government, a number of close-knit Cherokee communities in the Southern Appalachian Mountains refused to relinquish their homelands, towns, and way of life. Using a variety of tactics, hundreds of Cherokees avoided the encroaching US Army and remained in the region. In his book Their Determination to Remain: A Cherokee Community's Resistance to the Trail of Tears in North Carolina, Lance Greene explores the lives of wealthy plantation owners Betty and John Welch who lived on the southwestern edge of the Cherokee Nation. John was Cherokee and Betty was White. Although few Cherokees in the region participated in slavery, the Welches held nine African Americans in bondage. During removal, the Welches assisted roughly 100 Cherokees hiding in the steep mountains. Afterward, they provided land for these Cherokees to rebuild a new community, Welch's Town. Betty became a wealthy and powerful plantation mistress because her husband could no longer own land. Members of Welch's Town experienced a transitional period in which they had no formal tribal government or clear citizenship yet felt secure enough to reestablish a townhouse, stickball fields, and dance grounds. Greene's innovative study uses an interdisciplinary approach, incorporating historical narrative and archaeological data, to examine how and why the Welches and members of Welch's Town avoided expulsion and reestablished their ways of life in the midst of a growing White population who resented a continued Cherokee presence. The Welch strategy included Betty's leadership in demonstrating outwardly their participation in modern Western lifestyles, including enslavement, as John maintained a hidden space--within the boundaries of their land--for the continuation of traditional Cherokee cultural practices. Their Determination to Remain explores the complexities of race and gender in this region of the antebellum South and the real impacts of racism on the community.

Elman offers a much-needed synthesis of early Chinese science during the Jesuit period (1600-1800) and the modern sciences as they evolved in China under Protestant influence (1840s-1900). By 1600 Europe was ahead of Asia in producing basic machines, such as clocks, levers, and pulleys, that would be necessary for the mechanization of agriculture and industry. In the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, Elman shows, Europeans still sought from the Chinese their secrets of producing silk, fine textiles, and porcelain, as well as large-scale tea cultivation. Chinese literati borrowed in turn new algebraic notations of Hindu-Arabic origin, Tychonic cosmology, Euclidian geometry, and various computational advances. Since the middle of the nineteenth century, imperial reformers, early Republicans, Guomindang party cadres, and Chinese Communists have all prioritized science and technology. In this book, Elman gives a nuanced account of the ways in which native Chinese science evolved over four centuries, under the influence of both Jesuit and Protestant missionaries. In the end, he argues, the Chinese produced modern science on their own terms.

Book excerpt: The Fry site (33Lu165) was an Ottawa (Odawa) farmstead on the lower Maumee River of Ohio that existed A.D. 1814-1832. Excavations revealed an Ottawa bark burial with trade goods, a cabin or shack, and an animal pen or compound. The material culture consisted of a wide variety of Native and Euro-American manufactured artifacts, including trade silver. The bark burial with trade goods is dated A.D. 1780-1809, slightly earlier than the farmstead occupation. The farmstead is connected with the Roche de Boeuf and Wolf Rapids bands of Ottawa that were removed to Kansas Territory in 1832. The Ottawa Tribe of Oklahoma are the descendants of these Maumee River Ottawa.

Although this conception has been challenged in recent years, it has not been completely dispelled. In Colour-Coded, Constance Backhouse illustrates the tenacious hold that white supremacy had on our legal system in the first half of this century, and underscores the damaging legacy of inequality that continues today. Backhouse presents detailed narratives of six court cases, each giving evidence of blatant racism created and enforced through law. The cases focus on Aboriginal, Inuit, Chinese-Canadian, and African-Canadian individuals, taking us from the criminal prosecution of traditional Aboriginal dance to the trial of members of the 'Ku Klux Klan of Kanada.' Mission San Gabriel Arcangél was known as the Pride of the Missions due to its legendary agricultural productivity and its prominence in Southern California as a center of commerce and social interaction during the mission period (1771-1834). This volume, SWCA Anthropological Research Paper No. 11, reports on the first archaeological data recovery undertaken at the mission. Working within the mission's garden area, the study revealed more than 300,000 artifacts and 45 archaeological features, including a large granary, a reservoir complex, and one of the first industrial properties on the West Coast: Chapman's Mill and Millrace. Using archaeological results to critically examine historical narratives, the project examined the economic and social organization of the mission through detailed analyses of the public architecture and everyday materials left behind by Native American residents in the productive heart of the community, including animal bones, plant remains, ceramics, and tools. These studies revealed a dynamic and resilient native population that, despite clear hardships, was well-supplied with domesticated meat and locally gathered plant foods. The architectural remains clearly demonstrate the stepwise process through which a European worldview was molded to the unfamiliar California landscape, where self-taught engineers developed techniques of harnessing water that enabled the population explosion that came to characterize the Los Angeles Basin in succeeding decades. Lavishly illustrated and richly detailed, the volume is a resource for archaeologists, historians, and mission scholars alike.
