Book excerpt: Angels of Pattaya offers a unique insight into the world of organised prostitution in Pattaya. In their own words, the bar girls of Pattaya reveal how they became involved in vice, their lives, their hopes for the future and what they think of their "customers". Many are poor and uneducated, others come from relatively well-to-do Thai families. Some engage in prostitution out of desperation for money, others out of greed. Some even view it as an easy lifestyle which allows them to drink and party all night and sleep until the afternoon. A few say they hope to meet a good man who will take them away from prostitution. Their confessions will make you laugh and cry, cringe and applaud. This book will change your perception of the women who work in Pattaya's go-go bars forever.
Book Synopsis Thailand Bar Girls, Angels and Devils by : Peter Jaggs
Download or read book Thailand Bar Girls, Angels and Devils written by Peter Jaggs and published by Booksmango. This book was released on 2014-08-13 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Men have been coming to Thailand for many years now to enjoy the infamous night-life of cities like Pattaya, Bangkok and Phuket and to experience the girls that work in the thousands of bars around them. Some have found out to their cost that there are devils amongst the young women that ply their trade in the neon-lit forests of the country and others have been lucky enough to have discovered angels. Peter Jaggs has spent the best part of the past thirty years in Thailand and his previous books about the characters and locations on the seedier side of the streets of Thailand have reached best selling status in their respective categories on Amazon's lists as well as those of other distributors and have sold thousands of copies to date. His first work, 'From Beggar to Butterfly, ' was described by the legendary Bernard Trink in a review in the Bangkok Post as one of the best books on Pattaya written. 'Thailand Bar-girls; Angels and Devils, ' is in the same genre and written in very much the same style. During more than a quarter of a century in Pattaya the author has seen and heard many tales of true love, deception and even murder and death, with Thailand's bar-girls taking the part of the main players. This book contains the very best of them. Many of the stories are funny and others are heart-warming. Some are distressing and one or two are bizarrely insane. Once again, the author has produced another work that is a must-read for anyone intending to take a stroll down the bright lights of Thailand's night-streets and it will give those who read it an unparalleled insight into the world of the country's good-time girls and hookers that will prove invaluable for anybody planning a close encounter with Thailand's bar-girls, and the angels and devils amongst them. 'Peter Jaggs is a highly skilled writer supremely confident in his craft' Daniel Schwartz, Pattaya Trader Magazine 'Jaggs is a rare kind of ex-pat, not only relishing the atmosphere of Pattaya and its charming women but he can communicate the romantic ups and downs with a perfectly targeted common touch' Richard Ravensdale, Vice President Pattaya ex-pats club
Book Synopsis Fear and Loathing in Pattaya by : Mark Jones
Download or read book Fear and Loathing in Pattaya written by Mark Jones and published by Booksmango. This book was released on 2017-03-09 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent reports in a number of western newspapers Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom and Canada - suggest that Thailand is one of the most dangerous countries in the world, for the aforementioned countries' nationals, to either be living in or visiting. Based on recent statistics the newspapers reported that, in terms of serious injury or death, their citizens are more at risk in Thailand than almost anywhere else in the world apart from declared war zones. To add balance to the argument the reports also clearly stated that the majority of the injuries, and fatalities were the result of misadventure or road accidents. In instances where murder or serious assault was involved the Thai authorities were praised for their professionalism in apprehending the perpetrators. All too often though, it is found that the perpetrators were either a jealous business competitor trying to eliminate the competition, or a greedy wife or girlfriend hoping to cash in on the death of her husband or boyfriend. These deeper level facts are something that is often not made clear in the report of the death or serious assault. It may be touched upon but we are often left to draw our own conclusions regarding the machinations behind the event. For many expats living in Thailand, these types of occurrences are an all too familiar theme with greed, more often than not, being the primary motivator. Sadly it is also quietly acknowledged that many of the victims foreign husbands, boyfriends, or business competitors put themselves in a position to be a victim in the first instance. That they weren't street smart or savvy enough and often, through their own actions or naivety, help create the circumstances leading to their injury or demise. Even though the local English language newspapers do a reasonable job reporting the eventual apprehension of the greedy wife, girlfriend, or jealous business competitor, nothing much is ever mentioned of the behind the scenes story. The rivalries, jealousies, motivations and emotions that are the fabric of a human tragedy go unreported. This book seeks to rectify that and it also seeks to show balance; that as much as the blame can be pointed at the motivations of a jealous business competitor, greedy wife, or girlfriend, it can also be apportioned to the poor life decisions made by the victim. For many of us who continue to live in Thailand, or those who are considering moving here, there is a lesson in that. That one must take responsibility for one's own actions at all times and never put yourself in a position to be a victim. As a foreigner in Thailand you are, in most instances, on your own. You are, whether you like it or not, very much the director of your own destiny.
Book Synopsis Nostalgia Now by : Michael Hviid Jacobsen
Download or read book Nostalgia Now written by Michael Hviid Jacobsen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-02-25 with total page 213 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the nature of nostalgia as an important emotion in contemporary society and social theory. Situated between the ‘sociology of emotions’ and ‘nostalgia studies’, it considers the reasons for which nostalgia appears to be becoming an increasingly significant and debated emotion in late-modern culture. With chapters offering studies of nostalgia at micro-, meso- and macro-levels of society, it offers insights into the rise to prominence of nostalgia and the attendant consequences. Thematically organised and examining the role of nostalgia on an individual level – in the lives of concrete individuals – as well as analysing its function on a more historical social level as a collective and culturally shared emotion, Nostalgia Now brings together the latest empirical and theoretical work on an important contemporary emotion and proposes new agendas for research. As such, it will appeal to scholars of sociology, social theory, psychology and cultural studies with interests in the emotions.

Book Synopsis Historical Dictionary of Thailand by : Gerald W. Fry
Download or read book Historical Dictionary of Thailand written by Gerald W. Fry and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2013-08-08 with total page 712 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout its history, Thailand has shown remarkable resiliency, adaptability, and creativity in responding to serious threats and crises, and this since much earlier times when it was known as Siam. This book, while focusing on the modern period, does reach back to ancient kingdoms but also shows the impressive rise to a modern democracy, although still endowed with a king, and even more impressively, an economic “tiger.” Moreover, it has become a prime tourist destination and is thus known to vast numbers of foreigners as a sort of “instant Asia.” The Historical Dictionary of Thailand, now in its third edition, covers this amazing story in various ways. First, the chronology traces the most significant events from year to year. The introduction then provides a good overview of the land and people, the history and traditions, and where it now seems to be heading. The dictionary, which by now has hundreds of detailed and cross-referenced entries, looks more closely at important persons, places, institutions and events as well as more generally its politics, economy, society, culture and religion. So this is an excellent reference work not only for scholars but many others who have visited the country and were fascinated by it.
