It’s hard to keep your resolve when your sworn enemy is a tall, hunky, and incredibly appealing surfer. Sixteen-year-old Echo Sutton is anxious for the summer season to start in her home town of Angel Beach where she helps her grandmother run her famous cinnamon roll bakery, Rainbow’s End. But when John Freely, a ruthless business man with his sights set on buying Angel Beach, sends his three wild sons to town, Echo’s peaceful summer vacation turns to chaos. Echo is determined to shun, loathe, and despise anyone with the Freely name...but Jamison Freely is making that very hard. The last way Jamison Freely wants to spend his summer is with his brothers doing his father’s evil bidding in Angel Beach. But knowing his self-centered older brother, Reeve, will not keep an eye on their reckless younger brother, Matthew, he reluctantly agrees to go. Once Jamison meets Echo Sutton, the granddaughter of the local bakery owner, he can’t stop thinking about her. In the midst of his brothers wreaking havoc in the quiet beach town, Jamison must convince Echo that he is not the enemy. An exquisite mystery novel. But this is a novel of dystopia and apocalypse; the mystery concerns the tragic flaws of human nature." —Library Journal (starred review) "Brilliant. . . . An ingenious interpretation of social woes." —Booklist (starred review) "Yamashita handles her eccentrics and the setting of their adventures with panache. David Foster Wallace meets Gabriel Garcia Marquez." —Publishers Weekly Irreverently juggling magical realism, film noir, hip hop, and chicanismo, Tropic of Orange takes place in a Los Angeles where the homeless, gangsters, infant organ entrepreneurs, and Hollywood collide on a stretch of the Harbor Freeway. Hemmed in by wildfires, it's a symphony conducted from an overpass, grandiose, comic, and as diverse as the city itself. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a new way of thinking about film endings. Whereas existing works on the subject concentrate on narrative resolution, this book explores the way film endings blend together a complex of motifs, tropes and other elements to create the sense of an ending—that is, it looks at ‘endings as endings’. Drawing on a wide range of examples taken from films of different periods and national cinemas, the author identifies three key features which structure the work: thresholds and boundaries, water, and, above all, the beach. The beach combines water and a boundary and is the most resonant of the key sites to which film endings gravitate. Although beach endings go back to at least 1910, they have increased markedly in post-classical cinema, and can be found across all genres and in films from many different countries. As the leading example of the book’s argument, they illustrate both the aesthetic richness and the structural complexity of film endings.

Book excerpt: In the early 1970s, empowered by the civil rights and women's movements, a new group of women writers began speaking to the American public. Their topic, broadly defined, was the postmodern American West. By the mid-1980s, their combined works made for a bona fide literary groundswell in both critical and commercial terms. However, as Krista Comer notes, despite the attentions of publishers, the media, and millions of readers, literary scholars have rarely addressed this movement or its writers. Too many critics, Comer argues, still enamored of western images that are both masculine and antimodern, have been slow to reckon with the emergence of a new, far more "feminine," postmodern, multiracial, and urban west. Here, she calls for a redesign of the field of western cultural studies, one that engages issues of gender and race and is more self-conscious about space itself_especially that cherished symbol of western "authenticity," open landscape. Surveying works by Joan Didion, Wanda Coleman, Maxine Hong Kingston, Leslie Marmon Silko, Barbara Kingsolver, Pam Houston, Louise Erdrich, Sandra Cisneros, and Mary Clearman Blew, Comer shows how these and other contemporary women writers have mapped new geographical imaginations upon the cultural and social spaces of today's American West.

Book excerpt: Both evocative and magical, Zanzibar offers travellers the quintessential Indian Ocean experience; palm fringed coastlines, powder- white sand, and colourful aquatic life.Passionate about detail, Chris and Susan McIntyre have carried out extensive on-the-ground research in producing this updated edition. There has been significant growth in the number of hotels, lodges and guesthouses on all three main islands since the last edition and, consequently, the accommodation listings have increased significantly: notably in Zanzibar Town (Stone Town), Matemwe, Michamvi Peninsula, and Mafia island. They visited all the accommodation listed. With almost 300 properties featured, many are newly built and the vast majority (spanning all budget levels) do not feature in any other guide on the market. Each entry has a detailed description with a strong emphasis on guiding readers to the most ethical options. Zanzibar goes into far greater depth than its competitors on the natural environment, history, culture, and sights. Few other guide books cover the islands of Pemba and Mafia in any detail and yet they are easily combined in a trip. With a focus on the environment, visitors are directed towards fair-trade shopping opportunities and sustainable marine parks. This new edition also includes a dedicated section on southern Tanzanian safaris, making this guide excellent for readers looking for a bush and beach combination. Advice is given on how to be sensitive to the local Muslim culture. Bradt's guide is the most frequently and scrupulously updated guide available, vital for a destination with tourism growing and changing so rapidly.

Book excerpt: Words would never be enough. He had to prove it. From a young age, Erin McKinney has been taught that there’s only one man she can rely on—her older brother. The rest just aren’t worth the trouble. The one time she opened her heart and took a chance, the man reaffirmed her belief that it’s safer to be alone. It’s lonely, though, and living vicariously through her brother’s happiness isn’t doing the trick anymore. Gideon St. Cloud might be the man to show her that good men still exist. He certainly made quite an impression the last time he was in town. Returning to Sea Glass Cove to cool off in the middle of a heated custody battle for his son, Gideon knows he should ignore his curiosity about Erin, but he can’t get her out of his head. Quiet and reserved, she is a world away from his flaky ex-girlfriend and could be exactly what he wants in a woman. But she’s wary. In the shelter of her driftwood forts, he’ll find out why she distrusts men… and discover how he can prove he isn’t like the men who hurt her. Don't miss the first book in the Sea Glass Cove series, The Abalone Shell—now available!
