Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humanity pushed into the stars in search of a new home. Jonah Freeman is part of a third generation stuck aboard a starship, eager for their arrival at their final destination: Omega. Only things are not as they seem aboard the ship, with secrets that go back generations bubbling to the surface, leading him into the darkest corners of the ship. One question haunts him, though... If they’re in uncharted space, why are there human artifacts? Their new home is not what it seems, and the secrets of the planet Omega threaten to rewrite human history as we know it. Running away from humanity’s problems only means those problems follow them, and it’s up to the next generation to save the galaxy. Explore the beginnings of the epic Andlios series, with Jonah Freeman’s arrival on humanity’s new home in Terminus Cycle, and his daughter’s quest to unite humanity and save the galaxy in Cydonia Rising. *** Andlios Beginnings: Books 0.5 and 1 is a boxed set of two full-length books in the Andlios science fiction space opera series. This ebook collection harkens back to the classic, epic space opera series like Dune, Star Wars and Hyperion, while perfect for fans of Legend of the Galactic Heroes, Imperial Radch, New Crobuzon and more. With complex characters and themes, readers follow Katrijn as she deals with the ghosts of her family’s past and the pressures of a galaxy’s future on her shoulders. She’s not alone, though, as Jace, Trella and more cope with their own place in human history, dealing with LGBTQ, collectivist and anti-imperialist themes. The series delves into the metaphysical, asking tough questions about capitalism, colonialism and racism that have plagued history and if we can still build a better future. Terminus Cycle focuses on the history of the planet Andlios, while Cydonia Rising is the first book in the series. Veteran Star Trek and Dr. Who author Robert Jeschonek describes Cydonia Rising as such: “Once this book unlocks the vast, rich, and challenging universe that Dave has conjured in his ongoing literary Big Bang, you will never look back.” Author Matt Saccaro touches on the different themes: “It’s a classical space opera mixed with some ancient Rome + medieval Scandinavia. A fascinating juxtaposition and difficult to pull off, but Walsh makes it work.”

There’s just one problem: the Khonsu revolution finds itself besieged by the Earth Ministry. After Khonsu Station and the gate went dark, Katrijn and Jace ventured through once more, in search of Loren and their friends. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Celebrating its 30th anniversary in 2024, internationally bestselling author and literary icon Julia Alvarez's In the Time of the Butterflies is "beautiful, heartbreaking and alive ... a lyrical work of historical fiction based on the story of the Mirabal sisters, revolutionary heroes who had opposed and fought against Trujillo." (Concepción de León, New York Times) Alvarez’s new novel, The Cemetery of Untold Stories, is coming April 2, 2024. Pre-order now! It is November 25, 1960, and three beautiful sisters have been found near their wrecked Jeep at the bottom of a 150-foot cliff on the north coast of the Dominican Republic. The official state newspaper reports their deaths as accidental. It does not mention that a fourth sister lives. Nor does it explain that the sisters were among the leading opponents of Gen. Rafael Leónidas Trujillo’s dictatorship. It doesn’t have to. Everybody knows of Las Mariposas—the Butterflies. In this extraordinary novel, the voices of all four sisters--Minerva, Patria, María Teresa, and the survivor, Dedé--speak across the decades to tell their own stories, from secret crushes to gunrunning, and to describe the everyday horrors of life under Trujillo’s rule. Through the art and magic of Julia Alvarez’s imagination, the martyred Butterflies live again in this novel of courage and love, and the human costs of political oppression. "Alvarez helped blaze the trail for Latina authors to break into the literary mainstream, with novels like In the Time of the Butterflies and How the García Girls Lost Their Accents winning praise from critics and gracing best-seller lists across the Americas."—Francisco Cantú, The New York Times Book Review "This Julia Alvarez classic is a must-read for anyone of Latinx descent." —Popsugar.com "A gorgeous and sensitive novel . . . A compelling story of courage, patriotism and familial devotion." —People "Shimmering . . . Valuable and necessary." —Los Angeles Times "A magnificent treasure for all cultures and all time.” —St. Petersburg Times "Alvarez does a remarkable job illustrating the ruinous effect the 30-year dictatorship had on the Dominican Republic and the very real human cost it entailed."—Cosmopolitan.com

Book excerpt: Winner of the National Book Critics Circle Award in Biography In this critically acclaimed true crime tale of "welfare queen" Linda Taylor, a Slate editor reveals a "wild, only-in-America story" of political manipulation and murder (Attica Locke, Edgar Award-winning author). On the South Side of Chicago in 1974, Linda Taylor reported a phony burglary, concocting a lie about stolen furs and jewelry. The detective who checked it out soon discovered she was a welfare cheat who drove a Cadillac to collect ill-gotten government checks. And that was just the beginning: Taylor, it turned out, was also a kidnapper, and possibly a murderer. A desperately ill teacher, a combat-traumatized Marine, an elderly woman hungry for companionship -- after Taylor came into their lives, all three ended up dead under suspicious circumstances. But nobody -- not the journalists who touted her story, not the police, and not presidential candidate Ronald Reagan -- seemed to care about anything but her welfare thievery. Growing up in the Jim Crow South, Taylor was made an outcast because of the color of her skin. As she rose to infamy, the press and politicians manipulated her image to demonize poor black women. Part social history, part true-crime investigation, Josh Levin's mesmerizing book, the product of six years of reporting and research, is a fascinating account of American racism, and an exposé of the "welfare queen" myth, one that fueled political debates that reverberate to this day. The Queen tells, for the first time, the fascinating story of what was done to Linda Taylor, what she did to others, and what was done in her name. "In the finest tradition of investigative reporting, Josh Levin exposes how a story that once shaped the nation's conscience was clouded by racism and lies. As he stunningly reveals in this "invaluable work of nonfiction," the deeper truth, the messy truth, tells us something much larger about who we are (David Grann, #1 New York Times bestselling author of Killers of the Flower Moon).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The galaxy’s mightiest warriors laughed at humans entering their arena... until they met the bastard. Coop Sabre, along with his exploding barbed wire bat, Guy, has turned the galaxy upside down, taking crowds across the galaxy by storm. The brutal bloodsport of alien deathmatches was no place for the average person, but nothing about Coop and his reckless fighting style was average. With everything he desires seemingly within reach, an unwanted question pops into his mind: Is this really what he wants out of his life? The vicious cycle of violence, addiction and depression takes a toll on every warrior. It’s up to Coop to find where he belongs, or he risks losing it all. He is the INTERGALACTIC BASTARD. *** INTERGALACTIC BASTARD is an over-the-top cyberpunk science fiction adventure story built on a foundation with a lot of heart. Built on a foundation of imagining a future where humans unlock the galaxy and find dozens of alien races, we find ourselves outmatched and underpowered in the galaxy’s sport of choice: gladiatorial combat. No human could hold their own until former bouncer Coop Sabre smashed his way to the top. INTERGALACTIC BASTARD samples from the competitive worlds of mixed martial arts (UFC, Bellator, etc.) and professional wrestling (AEW, WWE, BJW, GCW, etc.). While there are plenty of combat scenes, the heart of the story revolves around Coop Sabre’s quest to build a family for himself and feel comfortable in his own skin, all in a futuristic, cyberpunk setting with evil corporations and all. Goodreads reviewer Kathy Wortham touches on the universality: “Even if you don’t like wrestling, SCI-FI readers will like this.” Goodreads reviewer Karen does as well: “Walsh’s Intergalactic Bastard may appeal to a Sci-Fi audience who are also going through personal struggles and enjoy a bit of UFC thrown in for fun.”

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anglo-Saxon lexicography studies Latin texts and words. The earliest English lexicographers are largely unidentifiable students, teachers, scholars and missionaries. Materials brought from abroad by early teachers were augmented by their teachings and passed on by their students. Lexicographical material deriving from the early Canterbury school remains traceable in glossaries throughout this period, but new material was constantly added. Aldhelm and Ælfric Bata, among others, wrote popular, much studied hermeneutic texts using rare, exotic words, often derived from glossaries, which then contributed to other glossaries. Ælfric of Eynsham is a rare identifiable early English lexicographer, unusual in his lack of interest in hermeneutic vocabulary. The focus is largely on context and the process of creation and intended use of glosses and glossaries. Several articles examine intellectual centres where scholars and texts came together, for example, Theodore and Hadrian in Canterbury; Aldhelm in Malmesbury; Dunstan at Christ Church, Canterbury; Æthelwold in Winchester; King Æthelstan's court; Abingdon; Glastonbury; and Worcester.
