Book excerpt: Regimole Spects has purchased a new bike for his spring holiday, which he always takes the week prior to the annual Spring Fling, with Ms. Jenny and Flash. Due to a spill from the bike, he is forced to spend the night at his friend Todeous Bastian's home, where he learns of some mysterious occurrences that have the residents of Cattail Pond worried. Soon after Regimole arrives at Ms. Jenny's for his holiday, Chief McNaire arrives, and Regimole shares the concerns of their neighbors over the incidents at the pond. They decide to have Detective Daniel Squirrey investigate the incidents in the week to follow. The week-long investigation brings forth very little new evidence in solving the mystery. Sunday arrives, and Detective Squirrey considers skipping the Spring Fling, when the island is hit by an unexpected storm causing the event to be postponed. While Daniel, Chief McNaire, and other villagers spread the word of the postponed event, a heart-wrenching howl echoes across the island from Cattail Pond and is soon followed by the emergency alarm ringing at Ms. Jenny's. With the immediate response of their neighbors, Flash informs everyone that Regimole has disappeared.
Book Synopsis From Midnight to Guntown by : John Hailman
Download or read book From Midnight to Guntown written by John Hailman and published by Univ. Press of Mississippi. This book was released on 2013-03-20 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a federal prosecutor in Mississippi for over thirty years, John Hailman worked with federal agents, lawyers, judges, and criminals of every stripe. In From Midnight to Guntown, he recounts amazing trials and bad guy antics from the darkly humorous to the needlessly tragic. In addition to bank robbers--generally the dumbest criminals--Hailman describes scam artists, hit men, protected witnesses, colorful informants, corrupt officials, bad guys with funny nicknames, over-the-top investigators, and those defendants who had a certain roguish charm. Several of his defendants and victims have since had whole books written about them: Dickie Scruggs, Emmett Till, Chicago gang leader Jeff Fort, and Paddy Mitchell, leader of the most successful bank robbery gang of the twentieth century. But Hailman delivers the inside story no one else can. He also recounts his scary experiences after 9/11 when he prosecuted terrorism cases.

Book excerpt: The Detective’s Handbook details the vital information law enforcement officers need to know to become better detectives. Since all essential aspects of detective work cannot be covered in a single volume, the editors have selected 20 of the most critical issues detectives face in their day-to-day work and present them in separate chapters. Using a unique format and style, this essential handbook draws on the expertise of contributors with police and academic backgrounds to provide both new and seasoned detectives with invaluable insights. It covers a wide range of detective procedures and practices employed in the United States and can be read as a whole or used as a reference for conducting various types of investigations and interrogations. The book highlights common mistakes and outlines best practices to help readers avoid making the same mistakes in the field. It provides the tools and understanding to conduct the range of investigations that today’s detectives will most likely have to conduct, including those involving sexual predators, healthcare and financial fraud, cyber crime, gangs, cults, personal violence, and property. The text concludes with a section on all-purpose practices and lessons for investigations. In this section, readers will learn the practical aspects of interviewing and interrogating witnesses, including how to interview and communicate with special populations, such as those with mental and physical disabilities. Sharing the most effective investigative practices and procedures in use today, this book is a must-have for police, sheriffs, and other government agencies that are responsible for protecting the public.

Book Synopsis The Classic Fantasy Collection by : Robert E. Howard
Download or read book The Classic Fantasy Collection written by Robert E. Howard and published by Arcturus Publishing. This book was released on 2017-07-31 with total page 976 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Epic romances, fearsome dragons and alien worlds lie between the pages of this volume. Containing more than 35 stories from the early masters of fantasy literature, the narratives here transport the reader to alternate worlds where magic abounds, cosmic terrors lie around the corner and intrepid heroes fight for justice. Drawing inspiration from Norse, Japanese and Chinese mythology as well as from traditional fairytales and modern fears, the authors collected here span the breadth of the genre. Including tales from William Morris, H. G. Wells, Robert E. Howard and H. P. Lovecraft amongst others, they demonstrate the plethora of imaginative literature that was written in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Many of these tales were foundational works, bringing ideas of the supernatural into the mainstream, and through their efforts creating entirely new genres. Before Tolkien, there were many writers embracing the realm of fantastic fiction. The man responsible for its origin was George MacDonald (1824-1905), a Calvinist minister and Celtic scholar, who wrote the first true fantasy novel. He was followed by a number of imaginative successors at the end of the 19th century, including H. G. Wells, Arthur Machen, and Ernest Bramah. After the end of World War I, the pulp magazines opened up the genre to a new generation of writers - particularly H. P. Lovecraft and Robert E. Howard - who provided exciting, magical and horrifying tales that fascinated a multitude of readers. By the outbreak of World War II, the outlines of the fantasy genre had been sketched out by these pioneers, and an entirely new type of fiction had been created. This collection includes stories by: Robert E. Howard H. P. Lovecraft G. G. Pendarves H. G. Wells William Morris Lafcadio Hearn Abraham Merritt Arthur Machen Ernest Bramah Robert W. Chambers George MacDonald
