Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The wisdom of ancient sages, many of whom predate the Christian era, particularly historians, philosophers, playwrights, and poets of Greece, but also many of the wise early church fathers and mothers continue to be a source of insight into life well lived. This book of poems gleans some of their gems of wisdom and views them through the lens of contemporary language and experience. In addition to the wisdom of early Greek sages, there is here a significant number of quotations from the apostolic fathers and the post-apostolic fathers/mothers: Justin Martyr, Irenaeus of Lyons, Clement of Alexandria, and Origen. From the so-called “Golden Age” of Christianity (fourth to eighth centuries) there are comments from Basil (bishop of Caesarea), Gregory (bishop of Nazianzus), Gregory (bishop of Nyssa), Isidore (bishop of Pelusium), and Maximus the Confessor. From the Latin fathers of the same period there are selections from Tertullian, Augustine (bishop of Hippo), and from the Syriac fathers Ephrem the Syrian and Isaac (bishop of Nineveh). From the desert fathers and mothers there are excerpts from Symeon the New Theologian and Amma Theodora. These poetic paraphrases of ancient wisdom are shared with the hope that they are faithful to these servants of knowledge and faith, and that they will continue to enhance life’s meaning today.

Solomon was a man of faith who took his readers on a voyage through some of the backwater regions of life that we all think about but rarely discuss in public. He wasn't afraid to ask the hard questions or to admit when there were no easy answers. In Something New Under the Sun, Pastor Ray Pritchard walks readers through Ecclesiastes, a book written by King Solomon from an earthly perspective. Solomon examines those things available to us in this life and invites us on a search for ultimate truth. Pastor Pritchard adds poignant and revealing stories to the words of this great king of old to bring this book crashing into our reality as we approach the 21st century. In short, bite-sized devotionals, Ray Pritchard brings us face to face with such topics as:the meaning of lifethe reality of deaththe instability of powerthe futility of richesFor a generation desperately searching for reality - and not knowing where to find it - God wrote a book that sets our feet in the right direction. Join Ray Pritchard as he follows Solomon on his journey to truth through the book of Ecclesiastes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Ancient Wisdom for the Good Life, Ralph K. Hawkins turns our attention to the Bible’s Wisdom Literature (Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Songs) and how it can correct us, train us in righteousness, and ultimately empower us for successful living. These are some of the most inspired writings on the Good Life the world has ever known, in which ancient Israel’s sages wrote about how to live stable, harmonious, productive, and joyous lives. Together, they interlock to cover the entire field of wisdom, providing contemporary readers with the tools to develop a unified world view with God at the center. Ancient Wisdom for the Good Life culls out the guidance of ancient Israel’s sages for a modern society that has been cut adrift from its moorings. Full of wisdom and practically written, this book could be used as a supplementary text in an undergraduate or seminary course in the Wisdom Literature, and it would certainly be useful for pastors in their sermon preparation or even just general reading. Table of Contents: Winning and the Wisdom Literature A Mindset of Integrity A Mindset of Community A Mindset of Communication A Mindset of Cause-and-Effect A Mindset of Goal-Setting A Mindset of Work A Mindset of Health A Mindset of Abundance A Mindset of Joy About the Author Ralph K. Hawkins (PhD, Andrews University) is professor of religion and director of the Program in Religion at Averett University. He is co-director of the Jordan Valley Excavation Project (JVEP) and the author of several books, including The Iron Age I Structure on Mt. Ebal: Excavation and Interpretation (Eisenbrauns), How Israel became a People (Abingdon Press), and Discovering Exodus: Content, Interpretation, Reception (SPCK/Eerdmans). An Anglican priest, Hawkins has also written pastoral books, including While I Was Praying: Finding Insights about God in Old Testament Prayers (Smyth & Helwys), and Leadership Lessons: Avoiding the Pitfalls of King Saul (Thomas Nelson).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book of Proverbs is power packed with wisdom that will guide God’s people in daily living and is widely recognized as a source of sound, practical wisdom. It’s a rich fountain of profound but simple insight. In Volume 1 of Treasures from an Old Book, author Lorin Bradbury, Ph.D. addresses every verse of the first nine chapters of the book of Proverbs in a series of fifty-one unique lessons. He draws upon more than forty years of pastoral experience, making practical applications throughout each lesson to encourage the Christian needing a word of inspiration and to provide insight and application for a busy pastor teaching on these timeless truths. Ranging from establishing a sure foundation on the word of God, to fear of the Lord, to parental instruction, to warnings against enticement from the world, Bradbury shows that a study in Proverbs has the potential to improve how you relate to your children, spouse, neighbors, and coworkers, and most importantly, how you relate to God. Lorin Bradbury, Ph.D. is both a pastor and a psychologist and draws upon both disciplines in communicating scriptural truths. Lorin Bradbury is very intelligent and highly educated. Coupled with his intelligence is his solid, practical understanding and perception. In this book, he has succeeded in unpacking the treasures of wisdom found in “Proverbs” and displayed them so that each of us have access to godly wisdom in our daily lives. —Terry Pugh, Pastor Odessa, TX Wisdom has been defined as, “knowing what to do next.” The wisdom of God is found in the book of Proverbs. In these pages, Dr. Bradbury does an exceptional job of making the insight of Proverbs relevant for today. This is an incredible resource for any pastor or Bible teacher. You will never be any better than your resource. The material in this book is well researched and exceptional in the presentation. —Carlton Coon, Pastor & Author Springfield, MO

Writing poetry brings Viviana joy and is a way to go deeper into an experience and receive information that is transformational” (World Poetry Moment). “The poetry of Viviana Siddhi represents an inspiring translation of this unceasing flow of life’s wisdom that permeates and embraces us humans and all other beings in the universe” (Author Marko Pogacnik). “Viviana Siddhi’s poems are like images . . . Think about a lotus . . . The material used for making the lotus has the image of the lotus, and it was covered with some other concept, but Viviana removed the cover and showed the image of the lotus to the world” (Yoga master Baiju Muthunasan). “Viviana’s new book shall help guide many upon their path, and it is with personal recommendation that all those pursuing the path of light read her words to become inspired by one who is truly walking in light and love” (Rev. Dr. James Capers). “In addition to Viviana Siddhi’s excellent scholastic accomplishments, she has proven her leadership ability within her Foundation as a Spiritual Leader, Sacred Artist, Yogini, and a Poet” (Leroy A. Spang, president, Northern Cheyenne Tribe). “Masterpiece” (Publish America).

Writing at the very moment when Rome was transitioning from a republic to an empire, Romans found the advice in his poems appealing: live quietly and non-extravagantly amid the excesses of a materialistic society, avoid extreme emotions of any kind as psychologically damaging, place a value on friendship of all kinds, do not be afraid of death, and most famously live every day to the full as tomorrow may never come (carpe diem). But above all else, Horace advocated a life of contentment and self-sufficiency"--
