Book excerpt: "The book is an exploration of the ancient musical instruments of Ireland based on the latest findings of archaeology, supplemented by information contained in some of the Early Medieval manuscripts and numerous legendary references. Recent research into Bronze Age wooden pipes, bronze horns, Iron Age Celtic trumpas and Early Medieval instruments has revealed a musical world of great richness and diversity. These investigations have uncovered fascinating evidence of ancient music and the possibility that it may be the origin of the musical tradition which is so much a part of Irish life today."--Back cover

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The jews-harp is a distinctive musical instrument of international importance, yet it remains one of those musical instruments, like the ocarina, kazoo or even the art of whistling, that travels beneath the established musical radar. The story of the jews-harp is also part of our musical culture, though it has attracted relatively little academic study. Britain and Ireland played a significant role in the instrument‘s manufacture and world distribution, particularly during the nineteenth and first half of the twentieth centuries. Drawing upon previously unknown written sources and piecing together thousands of fragments of information spanning hundreds of years, Michael Wright tells the story of the jews-harp‘s long history in the Britain and Ireland. Beginning with an introductory chapter describing the instrument, Part One looks at the various theories of its ancient origin, how it came to be in Europe, terminology, and its English name. Part Two explores its commercial exploitation and the importance of the export market in the development of manufacturing. Part Three looks the instrument‘s appearance and use in art, literature and the media, finally considering the many players who have used the instrument throughout its long history.

Book excerpt: Edward Bunting (1773–1843), the first systematic collector of Irish folksongs, was educated as an organ and piano player in Belfast. His life's work fell upon him at nineteen years old, when he was commissioned as a scribe to notate performances at a gathering of traditional harp players in Belfast in July 1792. He was so inspired by the music that, aided by some of the harpers, he embarked immediately upon travels around northwest Ireland to collect some of the old songs already close to disappearing. He published his first collection of Irish music four years later. In that volume and two later ones, he published almost 300 airs—some of them, according to tradition, dating as far back as the tenth century—and practically single-handedly rescued his country's ancient music from oblivion. The present collection, the last of Bunting's three such gatherings, contains 151 Irish airs arranged for piano, with the Irish names of the airs, their authors, and (where known) their dates of composition. Hard to find elsewhere, this is an indispensable book not only for students or lovers of Irish music, but also for students of general music history.

Numerous historical aspects, such as the function of the harper at Tara, the seat of ancient Irish kings, is explored in this comprehensive history of the harp of Ireland. Through the ages, the harp has been a symbol of the lyrical nature of Ireland and the Irish people. This book explores the reawakening of this beautiful instrument in Ireland and around the world in the mid-twentieth century and beyond, touching on the quite recent development of the popular Folk and Celtic harps of today.
