Download or read book The Cosmos of Khnumhotep II at Beni Hasan written by Janice Kamrin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-01-11 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1999. High in a cliff at the remote site of Beni Hasan in Middle Egypt, thirty-nine ancient tombs line a narrow ledge above the Nile River. These tombs were cut into the rock face, with pillars of living rock often left standing inside the echoing chambers. The tomb of Khnumhotep II dates to the early 12th Dynasty, primarily to the reign of Amenemhet II. The owner was a high official of the ancient administrative area in which Beni Hasan was located, the Oryx (XVIth Upper Egyptian) none or province. His primary title was Overseer of the Eastern Desert, a title which he held from Year 19 of Amenemhet II (c. 1910 B.C.) until at least Year 6 of Senwosret II (c. 1891 B.C.). This monument is the latest of the large Beni Hasan tombs, and represents the culmination of the series. The detailed analysis of this complex tomb necessarily comprises most of this volume.

Download or read book Boats written by Dilwyn Jones and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on archaeological and literary evidence, this book examines the importance of the boat in Egyptian ritual and belief as well as everyday life. The sun god was thought to travel the sky in a solar boat and Egyptians believed that the deserving might join the god Osiris in his divine bark after death. Boats played an important part in funerary ritual; models were often placed in tombs to provide the deceased with safe passage through the Winding Waterway in the underworld. Also, boats were frequently depicted in tomb-painting.
Book Synopsis Ancient Egyptian Ships and Shipping by : William F. Edgerton
Download or read book Ancient Egyptian Ships and Shipping written by William F. Edgerton and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-23 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ancient Egyptian Ships and Shipping: A Dissertation Structurally speaking, all boats known to have been employed by the ancient Egyptians may be divided into two classes: reed boats, and boats built of wooden planks. There is no evidence that boats of hide or bark ever existed in Egypt. There is a positive reason for believing that the Egyptians never learned to make them, in the fact that their wooden ships never had ribs; if the Egyptians had once learned to build the necessary wooden frame for a hide or bark boat, it would be remarkable that they never used a similar wooden frame in the construction of a wooden boat. Dugouts may occasionally have been imported into Egypt - for instance, from inner Africa. This is a possible explanation of the first dynasty model, Abydos, II, Plate III. But even that model may not represent a dugout: the shortness of the Open space may be due to the fact that the model is of dugout construction. Book Synopsis A Categorisation and Examination of Egyptian Ships and Boats from the Rise of the Old to the End of the Middle Kingdoms by : Michael Allen Stephens
Download or read book A Categorisation and Examination of Egyptian Ships and Boats from the Rise of the Old to the End of the Middle Kingdoms written by Michael Allen Stephens and published by BAR International Series. This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fresh categorisation and examination grew from the author's innate curiosity about the shapes and forms of the ships and boats of the Ancient World and particularly of the Ancient Egyptians. Many years sailing and the book by Nancy Jenkins, "The Boat beneath the Pyramid" which considered the vessel buried alongside the Great Pyramid of Giza sparked this curiosity, and from this start point, the focus of the research moved to the catalogue of model vessels in the Cairo Museum collection, published by Reisner, and the surviving hulls from Dahshur. These sources were augmented and supported by the work by Boreux. Finds such as the timbers from Lisht added valuable information. An interest in the greater variety of vessels to be known from the Old and Middle Kingdoms concentrated the researcher's attention upon the craft of these periods. Three fragmentary examples of hull forms, supposedly not known until the Old Kingdom, have been included, as the categorization system proposed in this research attempts to push back the previously accepted dates of some Egyptian hull shapes.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Models of Ships and Boats A11 Egyptian tomb has two essential parts, a burial place and an offering place. In the predynastic and the early dynastic periods, the actual objects intended for the use of the spirit, including food, were put in the burial place, while periodical gifts of food and drink were, no doubt even then, brought to the offering place. Enam the end of the Third Dynasty (perhaps earlier) the custom can be traced of representing the objects intended for the use of the spirit by paintings or painted reliefs on the walls of the offering place, while the burial place contained, during the Fourth and Fifth Dynasties, very little besides the burial. During this period, in addition to the objects, the paintings include all the ordinary scenes from life, sowing, reaping, cattle-herding, hunting, cooking, etc. Clearly the purpose is to provide the Spirit of the dead owner with a spirit world in essentials like the world of the living. During the early part of the statuettes of servants performing their usual functions are placed in Nth statue chamber), along with the statues of the owner and his family The serdab 15, it must be remembered.
