It is written to meet the needs of classes which can devote only a brief amount of time to the study of Ancient History before taking up the study of Medieval and Modern History. The "Committee of Five" of the American Historical Association recommends "that if it seems wise to omit any detailed study of ancient history and to give three years substantially to the other three blocks, the teacher, while omitting all detail, may still attempt to give his pupils some idea of the growth of the ancient nations, and some idea of their achievements and their qualities." With this aim in view, only such details of the political history of antiquity have been here included as are necessary for an understanding of ancient civilization. Furthermore, only such elements of the life of the people of antiquity have been emphasized as arc necessary for a thorough comprehension of the history of Western Europe in modern times. The book is written especially for the use of pupils in the first or second year of the high school course. The point of view of boys and girls fifteen or sixteen years old has therefore been kept in mind in the selection of details and in the wording and arrangement of the text; and also in the choice of maps and illustrations. The maps arc adequate for making clear the geographical references in the text. Several large pictures have been made to illustrate the text - an object seldom attained by the illustrations in ancient histories. These pictures are carefully designed to arouse the imagination of the readers, and to assist them in realizing the conditions of life in ancient times. Acknowledgment is due to Mr. Morris C. Book excerpt: History Of Ancient Civilization By Charles Seignobos CHAPTER I THE ORIGINS OF CIVILIZATION PREHISTORIC ARCHÆOLOGY Prehistoric Remains.-One often finds buried in the earth, weapons, implements, human skeletons, débris of every kind left by men of whom we have no direct knowledge. These are dug up by the thousand in all the provinces of France, in Switzerland, in England, in all Europe; they are found even in Asia and Africa. It is probable that they exist in all parts of the world. These remains are called prehistoric because they are more ancient than written history. For about fifty years men have been engaged in recovering and studying them. Today most museums have a hall, or at least, some cases filled with these relics. A museum at Saint-German-en-Laye, near Paris, is entirely given up to prehistoric remains. In Denmark is a collection of more than 30,000 objects. Every day adds to the discoveries as excavations are made, houses built, and cuts made for railroads. These objects are not found on the surface of the ground, but ordinarily buried deeply where the earth has not been disturbed. They are recovered from a stratum of gravel or clay which has been deposited gradually and has fixed them in place safe from the air, a sure proof that they have been there for a long time. Prehistoric Science.-Scholars have examined the débris and have asked themselves what men have left them. From their skeletons, they have tried to construct their physical appearance; from their tools, the kind of life they led. They have determined that these instruments resemble those used by certain savages today. The study of all these objects constitutes a new science, Prehistoric Archæology. The Four Ages.-Prehistoric remains come down to us from very diverse races of men; they have been deposited in the soil at widely different epochs since the time when the mammoth lived in western Europe, a sort of gigantic elephant with woolly hide and curved tusks. This long lapse of time may be divided into four periods, called Ages: 1. The Rough Stone Age.2. The Polished Stone Age.3. The Bronze Age.4. The Iron Age. The periods take their names from the materials used in the manufacture of the tools, -stone, bronze, iron. These epochs, however, are of very unequal length. It may be that the Rough Stone Age was ten times as long as the Age of Iron. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. The purpose of the entire course is to raise for consideration the insistent problems of the present. To give the student, early in his college course, objective material on which to base his own farther studies and his own judgments will, it is believed, aid him greatly in enabling him to understand the civilization of his own day, and to participate effectively in it. The early part of the course is a preparation for the consideration of the problems of the present. Nature in its physical features and resources and man with his equipment of more or less modifiable traits are presented as materials to be used in rebuilding the present into a more desirable future. The intellectual tools, or concepts, which have played an important part in attempted solutions are also treated in their context: the application of exact science to the control of nature, the idea of mass production for world distribution, and the belief in the participation of the governed in their own control. The more immediate setting of the problems is next developed through the study (i) of the historic background of contemporary civilization, and (2) of the recent historical development of the great national states. Then, in turn, and in considerable detail, there are presented the chief problems arising in attempts to find satisfactory solutions of the difficulties incident to the major relationships which men sustain. The problems of imperialism and the backward peoples, of nationalism and internationalism, of our contemporary industrial life, of conservation, of political control, and of education are treated, with an attempt in every case to state the alternatives at issue, and to relate them to the materials through the use of which change must come, to the dominant concepts of our day, and to their own historical setting. As far as possible, the author has tried to keep in mind three things: (1) the importance of any change as a part of the development of ancient civilization; (2) the connection between these changes and modern life; and (3) the interest and capacity of the student in the high school. He has tried to give a correct impression of events and changes rather than to describe them with literal accuracy, as literal accuracy is impossible in so brief an account. Even if it were not impossible, it would be undesirable, for an exact, detailed account would render obscure the character and the meaning of the movement under consideration.
