Book excerpt: ANCHOR YOUR FAITH IN THE STORY OF GOD BEFORE-AND DURING-THE STORMS Drawing on his own experiences with losses and tragedies through the death of his young wife and, more recently, the death of his sixteen-year-old son, John Mark hicks tells the story of God through his own experiences of suffering. He does not explain suffering because, as he describes, that cannot be done; rather, he walks with sufferers through the valley of loss. He grounds them deeply in the story of God's love, listening, empathy, sovereignty, and victory. This path is not only for those who seek to persevere in the midst of their suffering but also for those who want to prepare for the suffering that comes to all. In addition to helping sufferers, John Mark provides guidance for those who want to sit with people who are suffering. He offers advice to help comforters provide comfort. There are no easy answers. Our questions, in fact, are never fully answered. Despite this, however, there is a path of assurance, comfort, and trust that yields perseverance, peace and hope. The "anchors" are found in God, who loves us listens to us empathizes with us gives meaning to our suffering ultimately triumphs over all suffering These anchors ground us in God's redemptive story. JOHN MARK HICKS has taught at institu-tions affiliated with Churches of Christ since 1982, including Harding School of Theology from 1991 to 2000 and Lipscomb University from 2000 to the present, where he is currently a professor of Theology. He has authored or co-authored more than a dozen books and contributed articles to several books and peri-odicals, both academic and popular. He lives in Nashville, Tennessee, with his wife, Jennifer, and together they share five living children and two deceased. They also have six grandchildren.

Life in this world is, indeed, no smooth passage. In the midst of our personal storms we may unconsciously sigh: "If only we had an anchor for our souls--an anchor which keeps us from going under in stormy times." The good news is that in the Christ of the Bible we may find the earthly and eternal security, stability, and safety we crave. Christian hope in Christ is an anchor of the soul. Just as an anchor provides stability amidst the storm because it is fixed on a solid object, so the promises of God in Christ are sure and steadfast, for Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. This book directs the reader to the sure and certain promises of God. Life can resemble a merciless, stormy sea and our souls can feel like a fragile, vulnerable ship. But Christian hope is an anchor--anchored firmly to Christ the

Book excerpt: "You want me to what?!" I asked God. As the minister at the front of the church talked about how God speaks to people, I could clearly hear God telling me what He had planned. He told me to listen and follow His guidance in all matters of life and then to write a book. God's Whispers: Your Anchor Through Life's Storms is the manifestation of my dialogue with God. Everyone experiences tough times in life - from the loss of loved ones to challenges with work to issues with health. With these challenges can come doubt - in ourselves, in our relationships, and in our faith with God. During trying times, we want answers. On my journey, God spoke to me, not only through His voice, but through the Bible, other books, songs, license plates, nature, and people. Although God did not always answer prayers on my timeline, I realized that life events do not happen by chance. Only after reflecting on my life, could I see how God's timing is perfect - even when it seemed He hadn't answered my prayers at all. In the rapidly changing sea of life, the water does not remain calm for long. As you wait for God to guide you through your storms, this book will provide a valuable reminder to trust in God, to patiently wait for His voice to speak to you, and to recognize that unanswered prayers might be purposeful.

To regain a hopeful outlook on life is not difficult or complicated. All it requires is a shift in focus from feelings of hopelessness to hope set on Christ. Ship anchors are often used as a Christian symbol to represent Christ, who provides security to believers, holding them secure no matter the severity of the storm. When you have Christ as your anchor, rather than drowning in despair and depression, you are held secure in His hope. There are many causes of hopelessness, the most common is placing our confidence on things that can fail: money, health, beauty, and status. Painful circumstances such as divorce or a rebellious child cause us to lose hope in God's will, but our hope in God should not be based on other people or circumstances. God wants to work out His purposes for you and ultimately give you peace that passes all understanding. Learn what all of the unreliable anchors are, and how to place your hope in the only anchor that will never fail. In the section titled, "Steps to Solution," June Hunt gives you practical advice on: What Characterizes Misplaced Hope The Symptoms of Hopelessness What Distinguishes Faith from Hope How to Understand God's Will in the Midst of Disappointment How to Reach Out to those contemplating Suicide Find an anchor for your soul and a sure hope through the guaranteed promises of God. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The culmination of world events all seems to be leading in one direction. Christ himself outlined all these events and stated "these events will happen in a generation" prior to his return. Theologians commonly refer to the coming of Christ with the term parousia or (appearance). The Old Testament prophets foretold that the Messiah would appear to bring salvation and judgment. While the Old Testament messianic prophecies do not specifically distinguish between the two comings of Christ, the New Testament reveals Jesus to be the long-anticipated Messiah, who, in his first coming, died and rose again to secure the salvation of his people. The Old Testament spoke of the coming of Christ under the figure of the day of the Lord (yom YHWH), a day of salvation and judgment. The New Testament reveals that this "day" would be divided into two separate periods in which there would be two distinct appearances of Christ. According to Scripture, the second Advent could occur at any moment. The writer of Hebrews described the return appearance of Christ when he stated, "Just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment, so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him" (Hebrews 9:27-28).

Book excerpt: Problems can make you feel like God is far away, but they can also be the very things that bring you closer to him. Anchored In isn’t a book of Christian cliché’s or sweet stories to warm the heart but rather an authentic look at the hard parts of life. It challenges us to stop running from and clinging to the past, and to grasp tightly to the only unshakable Anchor that is able to sustain our souls through the storms of life. Micah shares personal stories, such as her father’s abandonment of her family, and couples them with biblical application to offer real-life glimpses of God at work. She offers inspiration to live a life full of God’s power rather than one that causes us to turn away and be paralyzed by problems. Living anchored in God’s presence is a beautiful gift that few truly experience simply because they do not understand the key to God’s power – surrender. Or if they know to surrender, they do not know how to let go of the problems that consume their lives. Through simple, tangible steps learn to surrender in every season of life. Hearing from God is not reserved for a chosen few, but rather promised to those who believe. If you are longing to experience God’s power in a deeper way, this is a journey for you. "When heartbreaking seasons shake us to our core, we often grab for everything other than God. But Micah tenderly reminds us page after page that Jesus is the only true Anchor who will hold us, steady us, and bring us through to the other side of every storm.” — Lysa TerKeurst, New York Times bestselling author and president of Proverbs 31 Ministries As a friend and guide, Micah Maddox will walk with you through life's hard times and show you how, through God's power, you can get to the other side with greater freedom, strength and victory. — Holley Gerth, Wall Street Journal bestselling author of You're Already Amazing There are times when life hurts deeply. Though the grief, struggles and pain, we need reassurance that we are not alone. Micah Maddox’s book Anchored In, renews our hope and reminds us that God’s power can carry us through the stormy seas of life. Through scripture, stories and personal applications, Micah lovingly offers hope, victory and strength for everyone’s journey. — Karol Ladd, author of Thrive, Don’t Simply Survive and Power of a Positive Woman Life is hard. Most of us have learned that truth firsthand, the hard way. Trials, broken dreams, and the unexpected storms of life can leave us stuck in the past or numb in the present. Anchored In is more than a pep talk or quick-fix formula—it is a way of life. It should be required reading by every believer, whether your storm is in the past, the present, or looming on the horizon. Regardless of the forecast, grab a copy and get anchored in! — Vicki Courtney, best-selling author of 5 Conversations You Must Have With Your Daughter, Move On, and Rest Assured Micah speaks about deep issues, pains, and struggles because she has been there. In the pages of Anchored In, you will find the healing hope of God. It’s brave, authentic, and powerful. — Courtney DeFeo, author of In This House, We Will Giggle When I watch the news each morning and feel the swirl of circumstances around me, it’s easy to feel powerless in this crazy world. Micah reminds us that it’s not our job to be powerful. It’s our gift to be connected to a powerful God. Through the vulnerable telling of her personal story and the timeless truths she embeds, Micah holds out a lifeline to us that’s Anchored In hope. — Amy Carroll, author of Breaking Up with Perfect and Proverbs 31 Ministries speaker and writer With tenderness and understanding garnered through personal experience, Micah Maddox points us to the healing power available to those who are anchored in relationship with Jesus Christ. Some shredded places in my heart have been mended. — Cindi Wood, speaker, author of Anonymous: Discovering The Somebody You Are to God One of the purposes of an anchor is to keep the ship from drifting or being dragged by the wind. A drifting ship could easily be damaged. A drifting Christian faces the same hazard. There are many events, pressures and influences that can cause us to drift in the Christian life. Micah has skillfully uncovered these areas while pointing us back to God’s anchoring presence. The lessons and real-life stories in this book provide direction on how to anchor our lives in the Lord. You will be enriched by this devotional. — Francie Taylor, Vice President, Keep the Heart, LLC Do you desire to discover God’s power regardless of your circumstances? Want to experience a deeper relationship anchored in the power and presence of the Holy Spirit? If so, you’ll love Anchored In. Micah Maddox brilliantly unpacks the power and presence of God (available for our daily living) and helps readers break free from paralyzing problems to embrace God’s propelling power for abundant living. — Julie Gorman, Co-founder of Married For A Purpose and author of Two Are Better Than One: God Has A Purpose For Your Marriage Micah's warm and engaging style feels like a conversation with a dear friend. She encourages her readers to run to the Lord through every circumstance of life, and to experience His power in every part of their story. She reminds us that we serve a God who transforms, a God who gives us His power to face every situation, a God who gives victory through our surrender to Him. He is good, and Micah's heartfelt words remind us of that truth. — Kristin Schmucker, author; founder of The Daily Grace Co.
