Book excerpt: New York Times bestseller • Winner of the Los Angeles Times Book Prize • One of the Washington Post's 10 Best Books of the Year “It’s no exaggeration to say that Behave is one of the best nonfiction books I’ve ever read.” —David P. Barash, The Wall Street Journal "It has my vote for science book of the year.” —Parul Sehgal, The New York Times "Immensely readable, often hilarious...Hands-down one of the best books I’ve read in years. I loved it." —Dina Temple-Raston, The Washington Post From the bestselling author of A Primate's Memoir and the forthcoming Determined: A Science of Life Without Free Will comes a landmark, genre-defining examination of human behavior and an answer to the question: Why do we do the things we do? Behave is one of the most dazzling tours d’horizon of the science of human behavior ever attempted. Moving across a range of disciplines, Sapolsky—a neuroscientist and primatologist—uncovers the hidden story of our actions. Undertaking some of our thorniest questions relating to tribalism and xenophobia, hierarchy and competition, and war and peace, Behave is a towering achievement—a majestic synthesis of cutting-edge research and a heroic exploration of why we ultimately do the things we do . . . for good and for ill.

Book excerpt: Body, Brain, Behavior: Three Views and a Conversation describes brain research on the frontiers, with a particular emphasis on the relationship between the brain and its development and evolution, peripheral organs, and other brains in communication. The book expands current views of neuroscience by illustrating the integration of these disciplines. By using a novel method of conversations between 3 scientists of different disciplines, cellular, endocrine, developmental, and social processes are seamlessly woven into topics that relate to contemporary living in health and disease. This book is a critical read for anyone who wants to become familiar with the inner workings of the nervous system and its intimate connections to the universe of contemporary life issues. Introduces the reader to basic principles of brain research and integrative physiology Dissects the dispute between Cajal and Golgi regarding the state-of-the art in the neurosciences and immunobiology Provides a short history of brain research and metabolism Discusses contemporary approaches in the neurosciences, along with the importance of technological versus conceptual advances Examines the dynamics of social connections between two brains, integrating mechanisms of Body/Brain/Behavior-to-Body/Brain/Behavior between subjects

It demonstrates how an understanding of biomechanical issues is an important part of evaluating and predicting animal behaviour. The book examines how behaviour is determined and/or constrained by biomechanical variables such as hydrodynamics, aerodynamics, kinematics, and the mechanical properties of biomaterials.

Book excerpt: Studies on the Development of Behavior and the Nervous System, Volume 2: Aspects of Neurogenesis describes the establishment of the connections between and within different parts of the nervous system. This book is organized into three sections encompassing eight chapters that specifically tackle the synaptogenesis, fetal function, and metamorphosis of the brain. The first four chapters of this book deal with a microscopic study of synapse formation, the specificity of interneuronal connections, and the development of excitatory and inhibitory synapses, especially in relation to early behavior. The following chapters examine the electrophysiological functioning of intact, living fetuses at macroscopic level. The concluding chapters look into the important events happening in the nervous system during metamorphosis and birth. These chapters also discuss the critical role of hormones and biochemical factors during these stages. This book is of great value to neurologists, developmental biologists, and researchers.

Book excerpt: Now in its third edition, The Brain and Behavior continues on its mission to present a simplified and accessible introduction to behavioral neuroanatomy. Human behavior is a direct reflection of the anatomy of the central nervous system, and it is the goal of the behavioral neuroscientist to uncover its neuroanatomical basis. Much of the new content in this edition reflects advances in functional magnetic resonance imaging. The text is presented in a highly structured and organized format to help the reader distinguish between issues of anatomical, behavioral and physiological relevance. Simplified and clear diagrams are provided throughout the chapters to illustrate key points. Case examples are explored to set the neuroanatomy in the context of clinical experience. This will be essential reading for behavioral clinicians including psychiatrists, neuropsychiatrists, neurologists, psychologists and clinical neuroscientists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based upon the Kenan Lectures that Karl Popper delivered at Emory University in 1969, Knowledge and the Body-Mind Problem raises problems connected with human freedom, creativity, rationality, and the relationship between human beings and their actions. These are what Popper calls big issues - too big for easy answers, but too important to be ignored. In these lectures, and in the discussions that follow them, Sir Karl develops a theory of body-mind interaction. This theory involves evolutionary emergence, human language, and that realm of autonomous products of the human mind which Popper calls World 3. According to Popper, consciousness emerged in the course of evolution as a kind of control system for the body, like a driver is a control system for a car. Objective knowledge - the kind of knowledge that is found in books and libraries - then emerged in the course of evolution as a higher level control system for the mind. Simply put, objective knowledge is the mind's control system for critical problem solving. In this way, full consciousness - the kind of consciousness that humans can have - is anchored in World 3 and is closely linked to human language, problems, theories, and criticism. And it is mainly through this use of objective knowledge as a control system for critical problem solving that we are able to exercise our freedom, creativity, and rationality - first by making contributions, like science books and works of art, to World 3; and then by using these contributions to bring about changes in Worlds 1 and 2. The Kenan Lectures were well-attended and provoked lively discussions. This book is published in the same informal language in which they were originally delivered and so can be easily understood by a general audience.
