Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This fully revised and expanded second edition provides a comprehensive, most up-to-date and extensive work on middle ear anatomy. Related biomechanics are explained to enhance the understanding of functional anatomy. Clinical situations are correlated to the anatomical impacts of middle ear diseases. Advanced knowledge of embryology helps to correlate anatomical status in relation to developmental anomalies. Endoscopy succeeds to demonstrate anatomical details along with their impact on surgery of the middle ear. The inclusion of carefully selected CT scans assist in the reading of normal anatomy comparing with pathological features. This work enables those undergoing surgical training to hone their surgical skills. Comprehensive and Clinical Anatomy of the Middle Ear 2nd edition is aimed at otolaryngology residents, otology and neurotology fellows, researchers, teachers and practitioners.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Doctors Pellet, Cannoni and Pech have joined forces to write a masterly work on the subject of otoneurosurgery and tumors of the base of the skull. The anatomic illustrations, derived from their meticulous dissections, are of excellent quality and a credit to the famed tradition of French neuroanatomists of the past. It is evident that the operative techniques described by these surgeons indicate that they have spent a great deal of time in the dissecting-room and that they have completely mastered the temporal bone. A perfect knowledge of the fundamental anatomy of the petrous bone is essential before embarking on the difficult surgical procedures in this region of the brain and base of the skull. Reading this work makes it abundantly clear that the results of this type of sur gery are vastly improved when neurosurgeons and otologists combine their skills. Each of these specialists brings his unique experience and entire knowledge to the operation for the greater benefit of the patient. We wish to congratulate Doctors Pellet, Cannoni and Pech on the publication of this excellent work. March 1990 William F. House, MD William E. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: No special field of surgery dealing with the cranial nerves exists today. This is not surprising in view of the characteristics of this group of morphologically and topo graphically heterogenous nerves. Morphologically we must differentiate between central nerves (I, II and VIII) and the so-called peripheral nerves (nn. III to VII and IX to XII), in which post-lesion rgeneration is quite different. Anatomo-topographi cally we must consider an intracranial and an extracranial part of each cranial nerve. For practical reasons at operation, further subdivisions of the intracranial course of cranial nerves are to be distinguished in the anterior, middle and posterior cranial fossae as well as within the petrous bone. This underscores the extensive tasks awaiting surgeons operating in the ventral part of the brain and facial skull as well as in the more dorsal part of the skull and neck. This very wide field cannot be covered by a single surgical discipline alone. In our opinion, considerable progress has been made in surgery of the cranial nerves only in recent years. This may be explained by the increased mastery of microsurgical techniques by all surgeons in terested in the surgery of the base of the skull as well as with the initiation of more interdisciplinary consultation and jointly performed operations. Possibilities of fu ture development can be discerned in the text. The base of the skull separating the extra-and intracranial part of cranial nerves should not be a barrier but a connect ing link.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Idiopathic Hemifacial Spasm constitutes a severe disability both from a cosmetic and psychological point of view and functionally for the daily life. Until recently this peculiar disease had remained enigmatous and was resistant to any kinds of treatments. Over the last two decades important advances have been made in the comprehension of its mechanisms and the efficacy of its treatment. Botulinic toxin revealed to be helpful although its effects are most often transient. Microvascular decompression – suppressing the neuro-vascular conflict almost constantly found at the root exit zone of the facial nerve from the brain stem – has been recognized as the curative treatment of this disease. A wide range of specialists, namely neurologists, ophthalmologists, ENT-surgeons, clinical neurophysiologists, neuroradiologists and of course neurosurgeons are involved in the diagnosis and the management of Hemifacial Spasm and will be interested in this multidisciplinary review of the topic.

Book excerpt: The atlas covers the normal microsurgical anatomy of the central skull base as well as the pathological anatomy of the tumorous and vascular lesions of this region. The book gives a detailed description of the contemporary approaches to the individual pathologies in the central skull base which have evolved in the last 15 years. Complete or partial resection of the tumorous lesions, the exclusion of aneurysms and preservation of the patency of the internal carotid artery are given. A unique source of technical data and statistics that allows careful evaluation of the approaches to the region based on a precise understanding of the underlying anatomy.

Book excerpt: This publication aims to give comprehensive information on the methods of gamma knife radiosurgery and the results of treatment of the most frequent diagnoses using radiosurgery. A summarisation of existing knowledge and results obtained in gamma knife radiosurgery world-wide is based on experience with treatment of more than 13,500 patients over 20 years at Na Homolce Hospital, Prague. Besides detailing the basic data of Leksell gamma knife radiosurgery, this book also provides thorough technical description of former and existing gamma knife models, basic physics principles of gamma knife radiosurgery, calibration and quality assurance as well as standardised treatment procedures. The book is primarily intended for physicians, who, together with the patient decide on the most appropriate methods of treatment for each diagnosis. The publication can be also helpful to medical physicists who are involved in gamma knife radiosurgery and responsible for its calibration and quality assurance. Finally, it is also intended for patients who are looking for, if necessary, more comprehensive information on the radiosurgical treatment method for tumours and other brain disorders.
