Download or read book Neural Control of Movement written by W.R. Ferrell and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Presented with a choice of evils, most would prefer to be blinded rather than to be unable to move, immobilized in the late stages of Parkinson's disease. Yet in everyday life, as in Neuroscience, vision holds the centre of the stage. The conscious psyche watches a private TV show all day long, while the motor system is left to get on with it "out of sight and out of mind. " Motor skills are worshipped at all levels of society, whether in golf, tennis, soccer, athletics or in musical performance; meanwhile the subconscious machinery is ignored. But scientifically there is steady advance on a wide front, as we are reminded here, from the reversal of the reflexes of the stick insects to the site of motor learning in the human cerebral cortex. As in the rest of Physiology, evolution has preserved that which has already worked well; thus general principles can often be best discerned in lower animals. No one scientist can be personally involved at all levels of analysis, but especially for the motor system a narrow view is doomed from the outset. Interaction is all; the spinal cord has surrendered its autonomy to the brain, but the brain can only control the limbs by talking to the spinal cord in a language that it can understand, determined by its pre-existing circuitry; and both receive a continuous stream of feedback from the periphery.
Book Synopsis Translation, Ideology and Gender by : Carmen Camus Camus
Download or read book Translation, Ideology and Gender written by Carmen Camus Camus and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2017-05-11 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the “cultural turn” in the 1990s, increasing attention has been paid to ideological concerns and gender issues in relation to translation studies. This volume is a further illustration of this trend and focuses on the intersection of translation theory and practice with ideological constraints and gender issues in a variety of cross-cultural, geographical and historical contexts. The book is divided into three parts, with the first devoted to the health sciences, examining gender bias in medical textbooks, and the language and sociocultural barriers involved in obtaining health services in Morocco. The second part addresses the interaction of the three themes on the representation of gender and the construction of the female image both in diverse narrative texts and the presence of women in the translation of poetic works in Franco’s Spain. Finally, Part Three explores editorial policies and translator ethics in relation to feminist writing or translation in the context of Europe with special reference to Italy, and in the world of magazines aimed at a female readership.

Book Synopsis Writing Systems and Cognition by : William C. Watt
Download or read book Writing Systems and Cognition written by William C. Watt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this distinguished collection the deeper cognitive aspects of writing systems are for the first time added to the perceptual and physiological dimensions and brought into a coherent whole. The result is a multifaceted understanding of alphabets and other scripts in which none of the major factors that shape those systems, and thus distinctively reveal attributes of the human mind, are slighted. The systems through which language is realized on the page are compared in nature and complexity with those through which language is realized as sound, and are seen in their true perspective. Long the object of intensive inquiry, the process of change in phonological systems is now joined to the evolution of graphological systems, and new light is cast on the nature of the relevant human cognitive processes in their diversity and underlying unity. The authors, each eminently qualified in his or her field, are drawn from Europe, Asia, and North and South America.
