Book excerpt: A proof of concept system is described for analyzing high energy physics (HEP) data using data base computing. The system is designed to scale up to the size required for HEP experiments at the Superconducting SuperCollider (SSC) lab. These experiments will require collecting and analyzing approximately 10 to 100 million 'events' per year during proton colliding beam collisions. Each 'event' consists of a set of vectors with a total length of approx. one megabyte. This represents an increase of approx. 2 to 3 orders of magnitude in the amount of data accumulated by present HEP experiments. The system is called the HEPDBC System (High Energy Physics Database Computing System). At present, the Mark 0 HEPDBC System is completed, and can produce analysis of HEP experimental data approx. an order of magnitude faster than current production software on data sets of approx. 1 GB. The Mark 1 HEPDBC System is currently undergoing testing and is designed to analyze data sets 10 to 100 times larger. Our goal is to satisfy the data processing and analysis needs of a generic high energy physics experiment to be proposed for the Superconducting SuperCollider (SSC), and requires the collection and analysis of between 10 and 100 million sets of vectors (events), each approximately one megabyte in length. We sketch how this analysis would proceed using an object-oriented database which support the basic data types used in HEP.

Book excerpt: CHEP (Computing in High Energy Physics) is the largest international meeting of the communities of High Energy Physics, Computing Science and the Computing Industry. The sixth conference in this series was held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil in September 1995. The focus of the conference was “Computing for the next Millennium”. High Energy Physics is at a point where major changes in the way data acquisition and computing problems are addressed will be called for in the high energy physics programs of the year 2000 and beyond. The conference covered a wide spectrum of topics including Data Access, Storage, and Analysis; Data Acquisition and Triggering; Worldwide Collaboration and Networking; Tools, Languages, and Software Development Environments; and special purpose processing systems. The papers presented both recent progress and radical approaches to computing problems as candidates for the basis of future computing in the field of high energy physics.

Book excerpt: HEP data structure systems, such as ADAMO, BOS, CHEETAH, JAZELLE, ZEBRA, etc., are not static but continue to evolve, some slowly, others more quickly. Large systems have been built on them, and by a careful comparison of their usage in experiments, one should be able to better understand which way to go. It is crucial to preserve the current investment while exploiting new computing technology.Experiments at large colliders are taking data and doing physics (or about to do so), so one can now compare practical experiences with different data management solutions in the area of: Simulation of Interactions and their Detection, Data Acquisition, On Line Management, Description of Detector and other Equipment, Experiment and Data Processing Bookkeeping, Reconstruction Algorithms, Event Display and Statistical Data Analysis. The articles in these proceedings are by contributors who are active in developing computer systems for Experimental Particle Physics where the organisation of the data plays an important role, as well as those who are building systems and packages to make this work easier.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Born after World War II, large-scale experimental high-energy physics (HEP) has found itself limited ever since by available accelerator, detector and computing technologies. Accordingly, HEP has made significant contributions to the development of these fields, more often than not driving their innovations. The invention of the World Wide Web at CERN is merely the best-known example out of many. This book is the first comprehensive account to trace the history of this pioneering spirit in the field of computing technologies. It covers everything up to and including the present-day handling of the huge demands imposed upon grid and distributed computing by full-scale LHC operations—operations which have for years involved many thousands of collaborating members worldwide and accordingly provide the original and natural testbed for grid computing concepts. This book takes the reader on a guided tour encompassing all relevant topics, including programming languages, software engineering, large databases, the Web, and grid- and cloud computing. The important issue of intellectual property regulations for distributed software engineering and computing is also addressed. Aptly, the book closes with a visionary chapter of what may lie ahead. Approachable and requiring only basic understanding of physics and computer sciences, this book is intended for both education and research.

Book excerpt: Now thoroughly revised and up-dated, this book describes techniques for handling and analysing data obtained from high-energy and nuclear physics experiments. The observation of particle interactions involves the analysis of large and complex data samples. Beginning with a chapter on real-time data triggering and filtering, the book describes methods of selecting the relevant events from a sometimes huge background. The use of pattern recognition techniques to group the huge number of measurements into physically meaningful objects like particle tracks or showers is then examined and the track and vertex fitting methods necessary to extract the maximum amount of information from the available measurements are explained. The final chapter describes tools and methods which are useful to the experimenter in the physical interpretation and in the presentation of the results. This indispensable guide will appeal to graduate students, researchers and computer and electronic engineers involved with experimental physics.

Book excerpt: Experimental Particle Physics has been at the forefront of analyzing the worlds largest datasets for decades. The HEP community was the rst to develop suitable software and computing tools for this task. In recent times, new toolkits and systems collectively called Big Data technologies have emerged to support the analysis of Petabyte and Exabyte datasets in industry. While the principles of data analysis in HEP have not changed (ltering and transforming experiment-specic data formats), these new technologies use dierent approaches and promise a fresh look at analysis of very large datasets and could potentially reduce the time-to-physics with increased interactivity. In this talk, we present an active LHC Run 2 analysis, searching for dark matter with the CMS detector, as a testbed for Big Data technologies. We directly compare the traditional NTuple-based analysis with an equivalent analysis using Apache Spark on the Hadoop ecosystem and beyond. In both cases, we start the analysis with the ocial experiment data formats and produce publication physics plots. We will discuss advantages and disadvantages of each approach and give an outlook on further studies needed. 1.

Book excerpt: No basic or applied physics research can be done nowadays without the support of computing systems, ranging from cheap personal computers to large multi-user mainframes. Some research fields like high energy physics would not exist if computers had not been invented. Departing from the more conventional numerical applications, this series of workshops has been initiated to focus on Artificial Intelligence (AI) related developments, such as symbolic manipulation for lengthy and involved algebraic computations, software engineering to assist groups of developers in the design, coding and maintenance of large packages, expert systems to mimic human reasoning and strategy in the diagnosis of equipment or neural networks to implement a model of the brain to solve pattern recognition problems. These techniques, developed some time ago by AI researchers, are confronted by down-to-earth problems arising in high-energy and nuclear physics. All this and more are covered in these proceedings.

Book excerpt: Massive data streams, large quantities of data that arrive continuously, are becoming increasingly commonplace in many areas of science and technology. Consequently development of analytical methods for such streams is of growing importance. To address this issue, the National Security Agency asked the NRC to hold a workshop to explore methods for analysis of streams of data so as to stimulate progress in the field. This report presents the results of that workshop. It provides presentations that focused on five different research areas where massive data streams are present: atmospheric and meteorological data; high-energy physics; integrated data systems; network traffic; and mining commercial data streams. The goals of the report are to improve communication among researchers in the field and to increase relevant statistical science activity.
