Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reinforced/pre-stressed (RC/PC) concrete is one of the most commonly used construction materials. This composite material demonstrates a highly non-linear behaviour caused by, cracking, crushing, agregate interlock, bond slip, dowel action, shrinkage, creep, etc. Because the bahviour of reinforced/pre-stressed concrete invloves so many non-linear phenomena interacting with one other, the formulate of rational analytical procedures to describe this behaviour is very dificult. Since the advent of the computer, powerful methods of analysis such as the finite element method and stiffness matrixmethod have been implemented to study and develop analytical solutions for the non-linear phenomena. However, the succes of such analysis depends on a through understanding and modelling of the composite material behaviour. This study describes the development of a non-linear computer code used to predict the non-linear response of reinforced/pre-stresses concrete beams that are subjected to acombined axial force and bending moment. The study discusses a new simplified approach, whereby the non-linear response is captured via a series of sequentlly linear steps. The finite element approach with the stiffness matrix method were used to model the beam element structure and generate its stiffness matrix. A monotonic empirical model for the concrete's stress-strain curve has been implemented to predict both ascending and descending parts of the curve. An idealized bi-linear elasto-plastic in tension and compression model has been assumed for reinforcing and pre-stressing steel. Concrete and reinforcing/pre-stressing steel are represented by separate algorithms, which when combined together, describe the behaviour of the composite reinforced/pre-stressed concrete material. The newton-Raphson concepts has been implemented in the interaction technique to satisfy equilibrium and compatibility conditions. Finally, correlation studies between analytical and experimental results have been carried out with the objective to establish the validity of the proposed model. The verification of the program started by comparing the predictions of the non-linear response for a reinforced concrete beam with that of the results which have been obtained experimentally, ang by using the finite element method for the same beam. The comparison was made for the failure load, yielding load and load-deflection relation. Further more, a 6.0m reinforced concrete beam has been investigated in detail as a simply supported and as a fixed supported beam, 2.5 m presstressed concrete beam also investigated in details. The comparison study shows that the prediction from the developed program correlate well with other results. The investigated beam show that the program results are in complete agreement with the assumptions and models considered to develop the code. The results clearly showed the magnitude and locations of cracking, yielding, ultimate load, failure load and ductility requirements. The program may be used as a tool to do parametric study on the behaviour of reinforced and prestressed concrete stuctures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is focused on the theoretical and practical design of reinforced concrete beams, columns and frame structures. It is based on an analytical approach of designing normal reinforced concrete structural elements that are compatible with most international design rules, including for instance the European design rules – Eurocode 2 – for reinforced concrete structures. The book tries to distinguish between what belongs to the structural design philosophy of such structural elements (related to strength of materials arguments) and what belongs to the design rule aspects associated with specific characteristic data (for the material or loading parameters). A previous book, entitled Reinforced Concrete Beams, Columns and Frames – Mechanics and Design, deals with the fundamental aspects of the mechanics and design of reinforced concrete in general, both related to the Serviceability Limit State (SLS) and the Ultimate Limit State (ULS), whereas the current book deals with more advanced ULS aspects, along with instability and second-order analysis aspects. Some recent research results including the use of non-local mechanics are also presented. This book is aimed at Masters-level students, engineers, researchers and teachers in the field of reinforced concrete design. Most of the books in this area are very practical or code-oriented, whereas this book is more theoretically based, using rigorous mathematics and mechanics tools. Contents 1. Advanced Design at Ultimate Limit State (ULS). 2. Slender Compression Members – Mechanics and Design. 3. Approximate Analysis Methods. Appendix 1. Cardano’s Method. Appendix 2. Book excerpt: An experimental and theoretical study was conducted to define and explain the general inelastic deformational behaviour of reinforced concrete voided slabs under symmetrical and unsymmetrical cases of loading up to failure. In the experimental phase of this work, six voided reinforced concrete slabs were tested. The varying parameters for these tested slabs were the void-depth ratio and the percentage of the longitudinal and the transverse reinforcement. In the theoretical phase of the study, a nonlinear finite element analysis was conducted for reinforced concrete voided slabs. In this analysis, a layered rectangular element was developed in order to account for the varied material properties within an element. Each layer may have different properties, corresponding to its state of stress or strain, its material, or its geometry. The theoretical phase of this study, was also undertaken to test the validity of orthotropic plate theory in analyzing voided reinforced concrete slabs, especially after cracking of concrete. The results of this experimental-theoretical study were combined with other available information to formulate some recommendations concerning the design, construction, analysis and economy of this type of bridge. Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled NONLINEAR ANALYSIS OF REINFORCED CONCRETE BEAMS AND COLUMNS WITH SPECIAL REFERENCE TO FULL-RANGE AND CYCLIC BEHAVIOUR Submitted by BAI Zhizhou for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at The University of Hong Kong in December 2006 In this thesis, the full-range flexural behaviour of reinforced concrete (RC) beams and columns made of normal- and high-strength concrete under both monotonic and cyclic loading is studied. The full-range moment-curvature relationships are obtained based on a numerical method that considers the cyclic response of constitutive materials. A two-dimensional nonlinear finite element procedure is also developed for the analysis of RC beams under monotonic and non-reversed cyclic loading. For RC beam sections, it is found that the full-range flexural behaviour is basically dependent on the tension steel to balanced steel ratio. The full-range moment-curvature curves for under-reinforced sections have long yield plateaus while those for over-reinforced sections have sharp peaks. The full-range moment-curvature curves under monotonic loading in sagging and hogging moments are found to give the envelope for cyclic response. Reversed cyclic loading generally creates overall residual tensile strains in RC sections, and is especially significant for under-reinforced sections. The variation of neutral axis depth during monotonic and cyclic loading shows different trends for under- and over-reinforced sections. For RC column sections, it is found that the full-range flexural behaviour is strongly dependent on the axial load and confinement, which govern the moment capacity, ductility and failure mode of an RC column. The flexural ductility is generally reduced by compressive axial load but increased by confinement. The moment-curvature curve of a section under tensile axial load or relatively low compressive axial load has a long plateau around peak moment, while that under relatively high compressive axial load has a sharper peak. The complete moment-curvature curves under monotonic loading in sagging and hogging moments give the envelope for cyclic response except for sections under very high compressive axial load. A section under tensile axial load or low compressive axial load tends to elongate after a complete cyclic loading, while a section under high compressive axial load tends to shorten. The variations of neutral axis depth and steel stresses are also dependent on the axial load and confinement. The effect of concrete tensile strength is only notable for under-reinforced RC beam sections and for RC column sections under tensile axial load or relatively low compressive axial load at the service stage. The Bauschinger effect of steel is negligible in the case of RC sections undergoing non-reversed cyclic loading, but becomes significant for reversed cyclic loading that is extended into large inelastic deformation. Besides section analyses, a two-dimensional nonlinear finite element procedure is also developed for better understanding of the behaviour of RC beams under monotonic and non-reversed cyclic loading. In particular, the local bond-slip effect is modelled by linear displacement contact elements. The numerical predictions are validated by experimental results. With the proper choice of bond parameters, results show that the procedure is capable of modelling the for

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Serviceability failures of concrete structures involving excessive cracking or deflection are relatively common, even in structures that comply with code requirements. This is often as a result of a failure to adequately account for the time-dependent deformations of concrete in the design of the structure. The serviceability provisions embodied in codes of practice are relatively crude and, in some situations, unreliable and do not adequately model the in-service behaviour of structures. In particular, they fail to adequately account for the effects of creep and shrinkage of the concrete. Design for serviceability is complicated by the non-linear and inelastic behaviour of concrete at service loads. Providing detailed information, this book helps engineers to rationally predict the time-varying deformation of concrete structures under typical in-service conditions. It gives analytical methods to help anticipate time-dependent cracking, the gradual change in tension stiffening with time, creep induced deformations and the load independent strains caused by shrinkage and temperature changes. The calculation procedures are illustrated with many worked examples. A vital guide for practising engineers and advanced students of structural engineering on the design of concrete structures for serviceability and provides a penetrating insight into the time-dependent behaviour of reinforced and prestressed concrete structures.
