Book excerpt: About three decades after the first experiments on deep inelastic lepton hadron scattering began to investigate the structure of hadrons, the history of this fruitful field of particle physics continues in the broad spectrum of research performed at the electron and positron proton collider HERA at DESY, where the multipurpose detectors ZEUS and H1 access ep scattering at a center of mass energy of 300 GeV and explore as yet uncharted kinematic realms of deep inelastic scattering. After the first years of data taking at HERA, each of the experiments has collected a total of roughly 40 pb 1 of e+p data, yielding sensitivity to deep inelastic e+p interactions at high four momentum transfers, Q2, where typi cal cross sections drop into the subpicobarn regime. This kinematic domain is characterized by electroweak unification, manifesting itself most markedly in the neutral and charged current cross sections, which approach an equal order of magnitude as Q2 rises above the square of the W and Z masses. Consequently, HERA allows, for the first time, studies of both types of pro cesses simultaneously with the same initial state conditions and in the same detector, and thus we can investigate the interplay of electroweak and strong forces governing the respective cross sections.

Book excerpt: This book constitutes the proceedings of a workshop on 'Exclusive and Semi-exclusive Processes at High Momentum Transfer', sponsored by the Institute for Nuclear Theory (Seattle) and the Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Laboratory). The workshop was inspired by recent progress in the field, particularly in the uses of off-forward or skewed parton distributions to elucidate nucleon structure. This book contains the written versions of 41 scientific talks, on subjects including the aforementioned skewed parton distributions, and also on deeply virtual Compton scattering, semi-exclusive (or semi-inclusive) reactions, and hard elastic and transition form factors.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electron Scattering from Complex Nuclei, Part A covers the historical phases of experimental development in elastic and inelastic electron scattering. This five-chapter text presents the logical development of the underlying theory of electron scattering. After briefly discussing the history of electron scattering from nuclei, this book goes on describing the theory of elastic scattering from a point nucleus, both with Born approximation and the accurate solution of the Dirac equation, as well as the corresponding experiments. The following chapter considers the analysis of nuclear charge distributions experiments using Born cross section and phase-shift methods. A chapter is devoted to the complete elastic and inelastic Born theory. This chapter also deals with the derivation of a theorem on the general form of the electron-nucleus scattering cross section, with an emphasis on the influence of the neglected transverse interaction on the cross section. The last chapter presents the status of elastic scattering along with some topics in muonic atoms that also determine nuclear charge densities. This book will be of great benefit to physicists, researchers, and graduate students who are interested in nuclear structure problems.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electron Scattering from Complex Nuclei, Part B is a three-chapter text that explores the excitation of the nucleus to bound levels and the nucleus breakup through particle emission from continuum states. The first chapter discusses the inelastic scattering to nuclear levels, the giant resonances, the concepts of radiative corrections, and the phase shift analysis for inelastic scattering. The subsequent chapter concerns the quasi-elastic continuum and the observations of the nuclear decay products. The last chapter presents special topics on electron scattering, such as dispersion and exchange corrections, sum rules, and isospin effects. Physicists, researchers, and graduate students will find this book invaluable.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is based on the course in theoretical nuclear physics that has been given by the author for some years at the T. G. Shevchenko Kiev State University. This version is supplemented and revised to include new results obtained after 1971 and 1975 when the first and second editions were published. This text is intended as an introduction to the nonrelativistic theory of po tential scattering. The analysis is based on the scattering matrix concept where the relationship between the scattering matrix and observable physical quantities is considered. The stationary formulation of the scattering problem is presented; particle wave functions in the external field are obtained. A formulation of the optical theorem is given as well as a discussion on time inversion and the reci procity theorem. Analytic properties of the scattering matrix, dispersion relations, and complex moments are analyzed. The dispersion relations for an arbitrary di rection scattering amplitude are proven, and analytic properties of the amplitude in the plane of the complex cosine of the scattering angle are studied in detail.

This book was released on 2008-08-29 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present thesis consists of two parts. Part I is devoted to the study of the second Jpi = 0+ state (Hoyle state) in 12C. Part II deals with the construction of a neutron detector ball for the electron scattering coincidence experiments. The monopole matrix element for the transition from the ground state to the Hoyle state in 12C through internal pair production is an important quantity for calculation of the 3a reaction rate in supernova nucleosynthesis. Therefore, a new value for the monopole matrix element has been extracted using the high-precision electron scattering data. The 12C(e,e´) experiment was carried out at the Lintott spectrometer at the S-DALINAC with beam energies between 29.3 MeV and 78.3 MeV and scattering angles between 69° and 141°, corresponding to momentum transfers q = 0.2 - 0.7 fm-1. An energy resolution aE ≈ 28 keV (FWHM) was achieved. A pair width T pi = 62.2(10) x 10-6 eV was extracted combining a model-independent analysis of the data in the measured momentum transfer range based on plane-wave Born approximation as well as a Fourier-Bessel analysis covering a large momentum transfer range up to 3.1 fm-1. Furthermore, the intrinsic structure of the Hoyle state was investigated by comparison of the elastic electron scattering and transition form factor data with predictions of three different nuclear models. The data clearly indicate a dilute density with a large spatial extension of the Hoyle state in comparison to the ground state. The structure of the Hoyle state has been predicted to be a dilute self-bound gas of a particles, similar to a Bose-Einstein condensate. A closer inspection of the model predictions, which reproduce the experimental findings, contradicts to a naive interpretation of the Hoyle state as a true Bose-Einstein condensate and indicates that the structure of the Hoyle state resembles 8Be + a configurations. Besides, the temperature dependence of the beta decay rates of the ground and first excited state at 96 keV in 19O has been studied. It is shown that the decay probability from the excited level exceeds that from the ground state for temperatures T > 109 K. This reaction channel should therefore be included in network calculations of the r-process and explosive nucleosynthesis. Part II of the present thesis describes the development and the construction of a neutron detector ball for electron scattering coincidence experiments of type (e,e´n). It consists of 13 liquid scintillators of type BC501A, covers a solid angle of 1.3 pi and allows an excellent n/gamma-discrimination. The new detector ball will provide a trigger signal for coincident measurements and thus permit a suppression of the background dominated by the radiative tail of the elastic line. This detector is therefore well suited to study the excitation and decay of giant multipole resonances in the continuum with typical widths of several MeV.
