Book Synopsis Diversity in Barley (Hordeum vulgare) by : R. von Bothmer
Download or read book Diversity in Barley (Hordeum vulgare) written by R. von Bothmer and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2003-07-03 with total page 307 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Genetic diversity is one of the main resources sustaining human life. Food security largely depends on the availability and utilization of this diversity, which is of strategic importance for countries and companies. Conservation and utilization of biodiversity is thus currently an urgent area of global debate and concern. Barley is a major crop in the world used for food, feed and malt, and with a wide religious and ethnic importance. The crop was domesticated in Neolithic time in SW Asia and spread rapidly under cultivation to new areas. Nowadays it is one of the most widespread and widely adapted crops grown under contrasting edaphic conditions. Adaptations to new environments, different agricultural practices and selection for different uses have further added to the complex diversity pattern. Is it at all possible to give a complete picture of the diversity in a crop or wild species? Are we, by adding new technologies, only revealing parts of the diversity? Do different sets of data show similar or conflicting pictures of genetic diversity? Will the large genome size reduce the role of barley as a model organism in these current sequencing days? Or, are there still major reasons to continue to work with this beautiful crop? The aim of this book is to cover the complex issue of diversification in time and space in a single crop: barley. Leading scientists from various fields describe the entire variation pattern in different sets of characters and an attempt is made for a synthesis to a holistic picture. The book proposes ways to use the achievements of diversity studies in future research and breeding programmes.

Book Synopsis Genotypic and Phenotypic Analysis of a Nepali Spring Wheat (Triticum Aestivum L.) Population by : Kamal Khadka
Download or read book Genotypic and Phenotypic Analysis of a Nepali Spring Wheat (Triticum Aestivum L.) Population written by Kamal Khadka and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nepal has been completely dependent on introduced wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) germplasm for variety development despite having >500 landraces in the national genebank. No Nepali wheat genetic resources were involved in the development of any of the 43 varieties released in Nepal for commercial cultivation. Nepal's capacity to genotype and phenotype its wheat germplasm, in order to utilize it for breeding, is in its infancy due to a lack of resources. To assist breeding efforts for Nepal, here, I hypothesized that: (1) Nepali spring wheat germplasm is genetically and phenotypically diverse; (2) that the important physio-morphological traits have a genetic basis; and (3) that promising accessions for future targeted breeding can be identified using such genotyping and phenotyping. I assembled the Nepali Wheat Diversity Panel (NWDP) consisting of 318 spring wheat accessions including landraces, CIMMYT lines and released varieties. The NWDP was phenotyped in four different field experiments (2 each in Nepal and Canada) and also under controlled conditions. Analysis of 95K high density GBS markers showed greater genetic diversity in the Nepali landrace group compared to modern germplasm. Unexpectedly, the population structure analysis revealed four, rather than 3 subpopulations as was originally expected based on breeding history, with significant admixture within each subpopulation. A genome-wide association study (GWAS) revealed 15 significant marker-trait associations (MTAs) for 6 agro-morphological traits. Targeted genotyping was conducted to assess the accessions for allelic variation at dwarfing loci (Rht) and a photoperiod insensitivity locus (Ppd), both targets of modern selection. Promising accessions for future breeding were identified that possessed dwarfing alleles but conversely also seedling vigour related traits with potential to promote early season drought tolerance. The NWDP also showed significant variation for NDVI, SPAD values and shoot waxiness. I suggest that the Nepali landraces should be further characterized to identify the "authentic" landraces while the genotypic information available should be further utilized in genomic selection. The data suggest that shoot waxiness may be confounding spectral reflectance measurements especially when a germplasm population is extremely diverse. In conclusion, it is hoped that this thesis will better inform and accelerate wheat breeding for Nepal.

Book Synopsis Legumes for Global Food Security, volume II by :
Download or read book Legumes for Global Food Security, volume II written by and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2023-10-18 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humanity is facing many global challenges. These include 1) achieving food security for a rapidly growing population, 2) slowing the progression of climate change by reducing the production and release of greenhouse gases as consequence of human activity, and 3) meeting the increasing demand for clean energy that will not harm the environment. In this regard, legumes deliver several important services to societies. Legumes provide a diverse range of food crops that are significant sources of plant-based proteins for humans globally. Grain legumes present outstanding nutritional and nutraceutical properties, while being an affordable food that contributes to achieving future global food and feed security in the context of an increasing world population.
Book Synopsis Molecular and Morphological Analysis for Stay Green Trait in Wheat by : Naresh Pratap Singh
Download or read book Molecular and Morphological Analysis for Stay Green Trait in Wheat written by Naresh Pratap Singh and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2014-10-27 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present research work published in this book is mainly to increase the worldwide production of wheat to meet the demand of human beings. As the world is facing many environmental effects i.e. abiotic stresses mainly drought, heat etc. which directly lead to the downfall in the production of cereal crops, pulses, vegetables, fruits etc..So the scientists need to develop new varieties which can show maximum production on yield and quality basis in abiotic stress conditions by using Biotechnological tools and techniques. In the present research work small contribution was made to overcome the problem of abiotic stresses on agriculture.
