Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper explains the prediction algorithm used by the Landing Craft Air Cushion Vehicle (LCAC) selection system. Five variables from a psychomotor test battery were combined to form a composite score. This composite score was then compared to a threshold score. If a candidate for an LCAC crew position achieved a composite score higher than the threshold score, that candidate was predicted to pass Phase I of LCAC training. Likewise, if a candidate scored lower than the threshold score he was predicted to fail training. The threshold score was determined by Statistical Decision Theory as interpreted from the Bayesian approach. Examples are given showing how the threshold scores can change as a function of the prior probabilities of pass or fail and the values attached to making correct and incorrect predictions.

Book excerpt: The purpose of our investigation was to determine if personality testing and a five-factor model could improve the selection of Landing Craft Air Cushion (LCAC) vehicle crew members. Vehicle crew members for the LCAC are currently selected on the basis of their performance on a computer-based psychomotor selection system. The various psychomotor tests in the selection system have demonstrated predictive validity in LCAC crew training. Certain personality characteristics may also be involved in the LCAC vehicle crew training success. In fact, various researchers have found that personality testing may improve the selection of Navy/Marine Corps aviators. There is increasing evidence that a five-factor model may be useful in describing the personality characteristics involved in training success. We believe that a five-factor model may improve the selection system used for LCAC vehicle crew members. A principal component analysis with varimax rotation was conducted to determine the underlying structure of the Adult Personality Inventory (API) with 168 LCAC crew candidates. The resulting factor scores were then analyzed using advanced statistical techniques to determine the relation of the personality factor scores and the performance-based test to an underway grade in training criterion. The results indicated that one personality factor, openness, significantly improved predictions of the criterion (p

Relevant literature and Navy LCAC personnel interviews resulted in a description of entering LCAC operator/engineer trainee skills and knowledges. Based on the literature review and the experience of key NAMRL psychologists an LCAC operator/engineer selection test battery was developed and automated for testing on an Apple IIe computer. The LCAC battery was designed to select those candidate most likely to succeed in training and in operational environments. The battery consists of automated perceptual/cognitive psychological tests including performance-based single and multi-task tests and a personality and biographical inventory. Key tests include Dichotic Listening and Psychomotor tests performed under multiple-task conditions. These tests measure divided attention and eye-hand-feet psychomotor coordination. Other tests include the Manikin, task, one-dimensional tracking and digit cancellation tasks, work and family orientation questionnaire, and the risk taking tests. These tests measure reaction time, spatial orientation, short-term memory, achievement motivation, and risk taking tendencies. (AW).

Book excerpt: Foundations for Designing User-Centered Systems introduces the fundamental human capabilities and characteristics that influence how people use interactive technologies. Organized into four main areas—anthropometrics, behaviour, cognition and social factors—it covers basic research and considers the practical implications of that research on system design. Applying what you learn from this book will help you to design interactive systems that are more usable, more useful and more effective. The authors have deliberately developed Foundations for Designing User-Centered Systems to appeal to system designers and developers, as well as to students who are taking courses in system design and HCI. The book reflects the authors’ backgrounds in computer science, cognitive science, psychology and human factors. The material in the book is based on their collective experience which adds up to almost 90 years of working in academia and both with, and within, industry; covering domains that include aviation, consumer Internet, defense, eCommerce, enterprise system design, health care, and industrial process control.

Book excerpt: For a mariner, the 'porthole' of a ship is the view, not only to the port, but also to the wider world. The title of the book implies that a yearning in any person to have a closer look at geopolitical, strategic and maritime issues and developments leads to a more 'encompassing' perspective, and thus a better understanding and assimilation of realities concerning international affairs. The nautical chart in the porthole represents the prevailing geopolitical (including geo-economic) issues in the predominantly maritime-configured 'indo-Pacific' region, shaped by the strategic imperatives of the stakeholders in the region. The fragmented background represents the complexities of international relations and the existing voids in 'still-evolving' international law. The cover also depicts symbols of maritime power and nautical usage representing the salience of the seas for the regional countries to meet their overarching national objectives. The sea could be a source of natural resources, a medium for communications and access to resources, and an enabler of multifarious international engagements.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The introduction of directed energy weapons into twenty-first century naval forces has the potential to change naval tactics as fundamentally as the transition from sail to steam. Recent advances in directed energy technologies have made the development of both high-energy laser and high-power microwave weapons technically feasible. This study examines the potential adaptation of such weapons for the defense of naval forces. This study considers options for using directed energy systems on naval vessels in the context of the U.S. maritime strategy and emerging threats in international politics. The framework for this study is an integrated system of microwave devices, high-energy lasers, and surface-to-air missiles which are evaluated in terms of their ability to enhance anti-ship cruise missile defense, tactical air defense, and fast patrol boat defense. This study also examines collateral capabilities, such as non-lethal defensive measures and countersurveillance operations. The global proliferation of increasingly sophisticated weapons and the expanding demands placed on its ever-smaller navy require the United States to reassess its current approach to fleet operations. This study concludes that directed energy technology has made sufficient progress to warrant the development of sea-based weapons systems for deployment in the first two decades of the next century. For operational and technical reasons, a Nimitz class aircraft carrier may be the preferred platform for the initial implementation of directed energy weapons. If successful, the robust self-defense capability provided by directed energy weapons will permit a fundamental shift in carrier battle group operations from a massed, attrition oriented defense to a more dynamic, dispersed offense.
