Book excerpt: Scheduling of machines has been interested in flexible manufacturing systems due to the flexibility and simultaneous task process capability of such production systems. Advanced material handling systems such as automated guided vehicles are being used in flexible manufacturing systems. Automated guided vehicles are flexible and easy to utilize in flexible manufacturing systems. Therefore, dynamic simultaneous scheduling and sequencing of flexible manufacturing systems and automated guided vehicles, are considered as the main focus of this study. Scheduling of machines and automated guided vehicles, if considered separately, are NP-Hard problems. Similarly, simultaneous scheduling of machines and automated vehicles are NP-Hard. Although there are some studies on static scheduling of machines and vehicles, dynamic scheduling has not been studied thoroughly in the literature. Population based search algorithms have been used to solve complex problems and in order to find solution sets. In this study, a genetic algorithm is designed to propose solutions for simultaneous scheduling and sequencing of machines and automated guided vehicles in flexible manufacturing systems environments in dynamic situation. In order to assist designers of manufacturing systems, two design variables were added to mathematical model presented in this study. These two design variables were battery charge capacity and number of active automated guided vehicles in the system. A specific time frame was assumed for each job set to schedule machines and automated guided vehicles dynamically. The genetic algorithm was initially validated by bench mark problems from previous studies. Ten job sets previously scheduled by other researchers using heuristic ii and meta heuristic approaches were used. Precedence constrain connects tasks by a network. There are 4 layouts which define machine locations and automated guided vehicle paths. Through solving the static scheduling problem of previous studies, the genetic algorithm was validated. Thereafter, a set of dynamic scheduling problem was developed from previous bench mark problems and solved using the modified model proposed and validated in this study. Dynamic scheduling problem results show that the genetic algorithm is not limited by the number of components to schedule in the mathematical model. In addition, it was found that as the number of active automated guided vehicles increase in the system, the total completion time decreases. This fact is due to the availability of automated guided vehicle to travel demand. Although having more vehicles in the system may increase the costs of production, one could argue the advantages and disadvantages. According to the results, the total completion time for the first static and dynamic scheduling problems (Job set 1, Layout 1) for one to four vehicles are 161 to 76 and 481 to 186 respectively. Another observation was finding best vehicle type based on the battery charge capacity. Automated guided vehicles maintenance and costs are related to the type and their ability to run with a single charge. Therefore, it is important to choose vehicles which fulfill the needs and requirements of the system. The battery charge capacities were from 25 to 100 which affects the total completion times for static and dynamic scheduling problems relatively. The total completion times for static scheduling problems are 100 to 96 for battery capacities 25 to 100. Likewise dynamic scheduling problem completion times are 291.5 to 272.5.

A firing sequence of the Petri net from the initial marking to the final marking can be seen as a schedule of the modeled FMS. By using the branch-and-bound algorithm, an optimal schedule of the FMS can be obtained. Automated Guided Vehicle Systems (AGVS) are increasingly used for material handling in factories and warehouses. An AGVS can reduce labor costs and is ready to be integrated into an automated factory. This thesis presents two AGVS models (shared and duty) which integrate the control of AGVS with the control of part processing facilities. Both types of AGVS are modeled by Petri nets. We want to compare the two AGVS in terms of systems performance and discuss which application is more suitable for each AGVS type. We also want to consider and solve AGV jam problems. The objective of the AGV jam-free control module is to guarantee a jam-free condition among AGVs in an EMS. Results have been obtained and analyzed.

Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS) * at Purdue University in 1 957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all con cerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an interna tional publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Cor poration of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 36 (thesis year 1991) a total of 11,024 thesis titles from 23 Canadian and 161 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. While Volume 36 reports theses submitted in 1991, on occasion, certain univer sities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Petri nets are widely used in modeling, analysis, and control of discrete event systems arising from manufacturing, transportation, computer and communication networks, and web service systems. However, Petri net models for practical systems can be very large, making it difficult to apply such models to real-life problems. System Modeling and Control with Resource-Oriented Petri Nets introduces a new resource-oriented Petri net (ROPN) model that was developed by the authors. Not only does it successfully reduce model size, but it also offers improvements that facilitate effective modeling, analysis, and control of automated and reconfigurable manufacturing systems. Presenting the latest research in this novel approach, this cutting-edge volume provides proven theories and methodologies for implementing cost and time-saving improvements to contemporary manufacturing systems. It provides effective tools for deadlock avoidance—deadlock-free routing and deadlock-free scheduling. The authors supply simple and complex industrial manufacturing system examples to illustrate time-tested concepts, theories, and approaches for solving real-life application problems. Written in a clear and concise manner, the text covers applications to automated and reconfigurable manufacturing systems, automated guided vehicle (AGV) systems, semiconductor manufacturing systems, and flexible assembly systems. Explaining complex concepts in a manner that is easy to understand, the authors provide the understanding and tools needed for more effective modeling, analysis, performance evaluation, control, and scheduling of engineering processes that will lead to more flexible and efficient manufacturing systems.

Book excerpt: With the approach of the 21st century, and the current trends in manufacturing, the role of computer-controlled flexible manufacturing an integral part in the success of manufacturing enterprises. will take Manufacturing environments are changing to small batch (with batch sizes diminishing to a quantity of one), larger product variety, produc tion on demand with low lead times, with the ability to be 'agile.' This is in stark contrast to conventional manufacturing which has relied on economies of scale, and where change is viewed as a disruption and is therefore detrimental to production. Computer integrated manufac turing (CIM) and flexible manufacturing practices are a key component in the transition from conventional manufacturing to the 'new' manu facturing environment. While the use of computers in manufacturing, from controlling indi vidual machines (NC, Robots, AGVs etc.) to controlling flexible manu facturing systems (FMS) has advanced the flexibility of manufacturing environments, it is still far from reaching its full potential in the environment of the future. Great strides have been made in individual technologies and control of FMS has been the subject of considerable research, but computerized shop floor control is not nearly as flexible or integrated as hyped in industrial and academic literature. In fact, the integrated systems have lagged far behind what could be achieved with existing technology.

Book excerpt: Material handling and logistics have become especially important to industrialists because of the competitive advantage that results from using the right methods to provide the right amount of the right material at the right place, at the right time, in the right condition, in the right sequence, in the right orientation, and at the right cost. But, what are the right methods? The emergence of sophisticated control systems, coupled with advances in hardware design, has resulted in a wide variety oftechno logical alternatives availablefor practically any application. Yet, with the emergence of just-in-time methods and the apparent success of the firms that have relied on the use of people and" simple" rules, rather than technology, the proper role of hardware and software in material handling and logistics is open to debate. Despite all that has been accomplished to date, the design of material handling and logistics systems remains an art as well as a science. Regardless of whether it is people, conveyors, lift trucks, robots, guided vehicles, laser scanners, storage/retrieval machines, carousels, voice encoding, machine vision, automatic palletizers, or other methods that are appropriate, selecting the right methods for moving, storing, and controlling material is vital. It is important that the selection decision be made after consideration is given to the requirements for amount, material, place, time, condition, sequence, orientation, and cost.
