The formulation is made in the total angular momentum representation, and for the special but important case of an exponential interaction a simple second-order expression for the degeneracy averaged cross section is derived. Numerical results for two intermolecular potentials compare favorably with exact and DW results do not vanish near threshold, (2) show the applicability of the method to molecules heavier than H2, (3) provide a method of assessing the relative order of contributions from various internal states, (4) provide a method of estimating higher order terms in the DWB series. The application of the second-order DWB series to problems with different forms of potentials of interaction requires only a single numerical integration. (Author).

Book excerpt: The first angular distributions for elastic scattering of 0.8 GeV protons from 12C, 13C, and 2°8Pb, obtained using the High Resolution Spectrometer (HRS) at the Clinton P. Anderson Meson Physics Facility (LAMPF) at the Los Alamos Scientific Laboratory, are presented. A brief description is given of an analysis of the elastic scattering data in terms of the Kerman-McManus-Thaler formalism with spin dependent nucleon-nucleon amplitudes. The data are shown to be sensitive to details of proton and neutron matter distributions. The proton distributions as determined by electromagnetic probes are used along with the available spin independent nucleon-nucleon scattering amplitudes. Preliminary analyzing power measurements are used to fix the spin-dependent amplitudes. The neutron distributions are adjusted to fit the data. Inelastic scattering of protons, exciting the first two states of 2°8Pb and many states in 13C and 12C, is analyzed in terms of the distorted wave Born approximation (DWBA). The model of coupling a 1/2− neutron to the excited states of 12C is found to explain some of the 13C excited states. Using this model a new assignment of J/sup .pi./ = 7/2 has been made to the 11.9 MeV state of 13C. A coupled channels calculation using a 0, 2+, 4+ rotational band is found to explain the 4+, 14.1-MeV state in 12C.
