Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Current Ornithology publishes authoritative, up-to-date, scholarly reviews of topics selected from the full range of current research in avian biology. Topics cover the spectrum from the molecular level of organization to population biology and community ecology. The series seeks especially to review (1) fields in which an abundant recent literature will benefit from synthesis and organization, or (2) newly emerging fields that are gaining recognition as the result of recent discoveries or shifts in perspective, or (3) fields in which students of vertebrates may benefit from comparisons of birds with other classes. All chapters are invited, and authors are chosen for their leadership in the subjects under review.
Book Synopsis Wildlife Habitats in Managed Forests by : Jack Ward Thomas

Book excerpt: That is what this book is about. It is a framework for planning, in which habitat is the key to managing wildlife and making forest managers accountable for their actions. This book is based on the collective knowledge of one group of resource professionals and their understanding about how wildlife relate to forest habitats. And it provides a longoverdue system for considering the impacts of changes in forest structure on all resident wildlife.

Book Synopsis Resource Selection by Animals by : B.F. Manly
Download or read book Resource Selection by Animals written by B.F. Manly and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2007-05-08 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We have written this book as a guide to the design and analysis of field studies of resource selection, concentrating primarily on statistical aspects of the comparison of the use and availability of resources of different types. Our intended audience is field ecologists in general and, in particular, wildlife and fisheries biologists who are attempting to measure the extent to which real animal populations are selective in their choice of food and habitat. As such, we have made no attempt to address those aspects of theoretical ecology that are concerned with how animals might choose their resources if they acted in an optimal manner. The book is based on the concept of a resource selection function (RSF), where this is a function of characteristics measured on resourceunits such that its value for a unit is proportional to the probability of that unit being used. We argue that this concept leads to a unified theory for the analysis and interpretation of data on resource selection and can replace many ad hoc statistical methods that have been used in the past.

Book excerpt: Visitors to Yellowstone National Park are drawn to the spectacular scenery, unique thermal features, and the large numbers of wild animals easily observed in their natural habitat. The thoughtful visitor to the park cannot help but be captivated by the unparalleled breadth of scientific knowledge needed to understand the intricate interrelationships that make up the yellowstone landscape. Knowing Yellowstone explores how scientists discover what they know about America's first national park and the surrounding lands. The chapter authors are scientists who represent the best of their fields of study. The science they describe is leading the way to our understanding of complex ecosystems worldwide.

Bruce and published by Peterborough : Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources. This book was released on 1998 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The guidelines presented in this publication have been prepared to assist resource managers in the standardized inventory of habitat, and in some cases, populations of selected species of wildlife that potentially occur within the Crown forests of Ontario. The first section describes generalized methods and techniques, including information on personnel and training, planning of field surveys, wildlife habitat inventory and geographic information system technology, and recording the location of observations. The second and main section presents methodologies to identify and delineate featured species habitats. Chapters in this section provide methodologies regarding: moose aquatic feeding areas, bald eagle and osprey nests, and great blue heron colonies; moose winter habitat; white-tailed deer winter habitat; provincially featured birds, mammals, reptiles, and plants; woodland caribou winter habitat, calving and nursery sites; nests of red-shouldered hawk and great gray owl; southern flying squirrel habitats; West Virginia white butterfly habitats; and other vulnerable birds, mammals, and reptiles that can be locally featured.

Book Synopsis The Scientific Basis for Conserving Forest Carnivores by : Leonard F. Ruggiero
Download or read book The Scientific Basis for Conserving Forest Carnivores written by Leonard F. Ruggiero and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This cooperative effort by USDA Forest Service Research and the National Forest System assesses the state of knowledge related to the conservation status of four forest carnivores in the western United States: American marten, fisher, lynx, and wolverine. The conservation assessment reviews the biology and ecology of these species. It also discusses management considerations stemming from what is known and identifies information needed. Overall, we found huge knowledge gaps that make it difficult to evaluate the species' conservation status.
