The purpose of this study was to identify exercise intensity, HR and energy expenditure in a group of women participating in the Curves program. Seventy-eight women (53.6 " 7.09 yrs, 192.1 " 30.43 pounds, 43.5 " 4.52 % fat) performed the Curves workout on two occasions. Results show that mean HR was 119 " 15 b/min which was equivalent to 79% max HR or 63 % HRR. Thirty-three women (52.7 " 6.68 yrs, 193.1 " 31.73 pounds, 1.8 " 0.28 L/min VO2 max) performed the Curves 30-min workout on two occasions. Results show that the mean RER to perform the 30-min workout was 1.00 " 0.07 and 0.98 " 0.05 for the two sessions. Estimated caloric expenditure was 164.5 " 25.19 kcals and 160.6 " 28.36 kcals for the two sessions. Results indicate that the Curves program qualifies as moderate intensity exercise.

He was Chair of the Exercise and Sports Science Association (ESSA) Research Committee, Project Director of the Australian Institute for Musculoskeletal Science (AIMSS) and an active member of the Australian Physiological Society (AuPS). Alongside his influential research career and leadership roles, Nigel was a strong advocate for postgraduate and early career researchers. His collaborative nature and approach to research ensured those mentored by him were considered, included and valued members across his many research projects and initiatives. Nigel’s impact and influence on the careers of early researchers will continue at Victoria University with both a Nigel Stepto Travel Award and Nigel Stepto PhD Scholarship established in his honour. Nigel was great friend and colleague to many who is very much missed. Nigel is survived by his wife, Fiona and two children Matilda (14 years) and Harriet (11 years). Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of following either the Curves® Fitness and Weight Management Plan or the Weight Watchers® Momentum Plan on body composition and markers of health and fitness in previously sedentary obese women. Fifty-one women (age 35±8 yrs; height 163±7 cm; weight 90±1 kg; BMI 34±5 kg/m2; 47±7% body fat) were randomized to participate in the Curves® (C) or Weight Watchers® (W) weight loss programs for 16-wks. Participants in the C group (n=24) followed a 1,200 kcal/d diet for 1-wk; 1,500 kcal/d diet for 3 wks (~30%:45% CHO:PRO); and 2,000 kcals/d for 2-wks (45:30) and repeated this diet while participating in a supervised Curves® with Zumba program 3-d-wk. Remaining subjects (n=27) followed the W point-based diet program, received weekly group counseling, and were encouraged to exercise. Body composition, anthropometrics, resting energy expenditure (REE), lipid biomarkers, and hormone concentrations were assessed at 0, 4, 10, and 16 weeks. Maximal cardiopulmonary exercise capacity and upper and lower body isotonic strength and endurance were assessed at 0 and 16 weeks. Data were analyzed using multivariate analysis of variance for repeated measures. MANOVA analysis of body composition data revealed overall time (Wilks' Lamda p=0.001) and time by diet effects (Wilks0́9 Lamda p=0.003). Subjects in both groups lost a similar amount of total mass (C -2.4±2.0, -4.1±3.4, -5.1±3.9; W -2.3±2.3, -4.5±3.0, -5.5±4.6 kg, p=0.78). However, subjects in the C group tended to have a greater reduction in percent body fat (C -3.3±5.2, -3.2±4.6, -4.7±5.4; W 0.6±6.7, -0.6±8.3, -1.4±8.1%, p=0.10) and body fat mass (C -3.9±5.5, -4.6±5.3, -6.4±5.9; W -0.4±5.7, -2.1±6.7, -2.9±7.8 kg, p=0.09), while maintaining FFM (C 1.5±4.3, 0.52±3.7, 1.3±4.0; W -1.8±5.4, -2.4±5.8, -2.5±5.1, p=0.01). While both groups had increases cardiovascular fitness, the C group experienced improvements in upper body muscular endurance (C 1.4±3.9; W -1.2±2.4 repetitions, p=0.006). Both groups experienced improvements in lipid biomarkers; however, only the C group experienced a moderate increase in HDL-c. Results indicate that participants following the C program experienced more favorable changes in body composition and markers of fitness and health than participants in the W program. The prevalence and substantial disease risk associated with physical inactivity has been described as a pandemic. The prevalence, health impact, and evidence of changeability all have resulted in calls for action to increase physical activity across the lifespan. In response to the need to find ways to make physical activity a health priority for youth, the Institute of Medicine's Committee on Physical Activity and Physical Education in the School Environment was formed. Its purpose was to review the current status of physical activity and physical education in the school environment, including before, during, and after school, and examine the influences of physical activity and physical education on the short and long term physical, cognitive and brain, and psychosocial health and development of children and adolescents. Educating the Student Body makes recommendations about approaches for strengthening and improving programs and policies for physical activity and physical education in the school environment. This report lays out a set of guiding principles to guide its work on these tasks. These included: recognizing the benefits of instilling life-long physical activity habits in children; the value of using systems thinking in improving physical activity and physical education in the school environment; the recognition of current disparities in opportunities and the need to achieve equity in physical activity and physical education; the importance of considering all types of school environments; the need to take into consideration the diversity of students as recommendations are developed. This report will be of interest to local and national policymakers, school officials, teachers, and the education community, researchers, professional organizations, and parents interested in physical activity, physical education, and health for school-aged children and adolescents.

Limited research has examined these responses in endurance-trained women. PURPOSE: To investigate the effect of exercise intensity on the appetite regulating hormones acylated ghrelin, PYY and GLP-1 and subjective ratings of appetite in endurance trained women. METHODS: Fifteen highly-trained women (18-40y, 58.4±6.4kg, VO2MAX=55.2±4.3 mL/kg/min) completed isocaloric bouts of moderate intensity exercise (MIE) at 60%VO2MAX, and 2) and high- intensity exercise (HIE) at 85%VO2MAX in randomly assigned order. In both trials, subjects ran on a treadmill until an energy expenditure (EE) of 500 kcal was achieved. Blood was drawn pre-exercise (baseline), immediately post-exercise and every 20-min for the next 60-min. Plasma concentrations of acylated ghrelin, PYY3−36, GLP-1 and subjective appetite ratings via visual analog scale (VAS) were assessed at these same time points. Food intake and physical activity were recorded 48-h before each trial. A mixed model analysis was used to examine the impact of exercise intensity (60% vs. 85% VO2max) on appetite- regulatory hormones and VAS responses over time. Where significant effects were found, post-hoc analyses were performed using the Bonferroni correction for multiple comparisons. For these same variables area under the curve (AUC) was calculated using the trapezoid method to determine total response over time. The overall statistical significance was accepted at the 5% level. RESULTS: Results for appetite hormones showed no main effect for exercise intensity or interactive effects, but a significant main effect for time; thus, data were combined across exercise intensities for each time point. Methods: Six male (age 22.8 ± 1.72 years) and 16 female (age 20.8 ± 2.17 years) subjects performed a graded exercise test on a treadmill. Then subject performed a 38-minute Pound® cardio-jam session. Heart rate and VO2 were monitored every minute throughout the workout and perceived exertion was recorded approximately every 4 minutes throughout the session using the Borg 6-20 RPE scale. Results: It was found that both %HRMax (males: 68 ± 5.2; females: 73 ± 6.8) and % VO2max (males: 39 ± 4.5; females: 42 ± 6.6) met ACSM guidelines for improving cardiorespiratory endurance. Throughout the workout subject considered the workout to be of "somewhat hard" intensity on the 6-20 Borg RPE scale (Average RPE = 12.7 ± 1.91). Energy expenditure for both males (280.8 ± 41.38 kcal/session) and females (221.8 ± 34.35 kcal/session) also met ASCM guidelines for weight loss. Males had a significantly higher energy expenditure than females due to higher body mass (165 ± 19.77 lbs vs. 149.5 ± 15.98 lbs). Conclusion: The Pound® cardio jam session meets the standards set forth by ACSM to improve cardiorespiratory fitness and weight composition.

Book excerpt: The influence of exercise intensity while participating in a structured exercise program on a) energy expenditure outside of structured exercise (non-exercise activity thermogenesis (NEAT)), b) reported energy intake (REI), and c) cardiometabolic biomarkers have not been previously examined. This study aimed to: 1) examine how exercise intensity (continuous moderate-intensity exercise versus high-intensity interval training) influences compensatory responses (changes in NEAT and REI) to an exercise training program in overweight/obese college-age females, 2) explore whether compensatory changes in NEAT and EI explain inter-individual differences in cardiometabolic responses to moderate- and high-intensity exercise training, and 3) examine the effect of psychological constructs and view of exercise as commitment versus progress on compensatory changes in NEAT and EI. Overweight/obese college females were randomly assigned to continuous moderate-intensity cycling (MOD-C) or vigorous sprint-interval cycling (VIG-SIC) for 6 weeks of exercise training. Participants in the VIG-SIC group performed 5-7 repeated bouts of 30-second sprints at maximal effort, followed by 4 minutes of active recovery. Females in the MOD-C group completed 20-30 minutes of moderate intensity with duration matched to maintain equal energy expenditure between groups. NEAT was measured with the Actiheart physical activity monitor, REI via the Automated Self-Administered 24-hour Recall (ASA24), and cardiometabolic biomarkers were determined using standard clinical procedures. Exercise views were recorded immediately following exercise training sessions via the wrist-worn PRO-Diary monitor. No between or within group differences in NEAT were apparent on exercise or non-exercise days. Similarly, no between or within group differences were found in REI changes. When groups were combined, participants maintained NEAT (p=0.99) and decreased REI (p=0.01) throughout the study. Significant associations were found between NEAT responses and CRP and GLUC changes and while these associations were small in magnitude for GLUC, a 100 kcal/day in NEAT was associated with a 0.42 mg/dL decrease in CRP. Exercise views were not shown to be associated with compensatory responses, but higher self-control scores were associated with increased REI during the exercise training intervention. Future exercise training interventions should educate participants beginning a structured exercise program about potential adverse compensatory responses.

Energy expenditure averaged 393 ± 86.4 kcal/session and RPE during the workout averaged 11.5 ± 1.91. Conclusion: The BODYJAM session meets the standards set forth by ACSM to improve cardiorespiratory fitness and body composition, despite being perceived a light exertion.

Physical fitness testing in American youth was established on a large scale in the 1950s with an early focus on performance-related fitness that gradually gave way to an emphasis on health-related fitness. Using appropriately selected measures to collected fitness data in youth will advance our understanding of how fitness among youth translates into better health. In Fitness Measures and Health Outcomes in Youth, the IOM assesses the relationship between youth fitness test items and health outcomes, recommends the best fitness test items, provides guidance for interpreting fitness scores, and provides an agenda for needed research. The report concludes that selected cardiorespiratory endurance, musculoskeletal fitness, and body composition measures should be in fitness surveys and in schools. Collecting fitness data nationally and in schools helps with setting and achieving fitness goals and priorities for public health at an individual and national level.
