With the continuous improvement of China's international status and the integration of Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, the hosting of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics is worth studying in how to build Beijing's international image. This paper uses the spatial-temporal-axiological proximization model to compare and analyze the successful hosting of the 2008 Olympic Games and the 2022 Winter Olympics from the perspective of the proximization theory proposed by foreign scholar professor Piotr Cap, and proposes corresponding measures for the construction and dissemination of Beijing's international image.

Although mega-events are short-lived, the urban impact they leave behind have a tendency to last decades. Urban planning and management have increasingly capitalized on the exceptional environment from mega-events for ambitious urban development projects. Mega-event deadlines permit politicians and projects to be expedited and go around normally required measures. Under the unique environment that mega-events offer, host cities have the power and opportunity to influence their development fate. Every mega-event happens within its own spatial socioeconomic and political context and host city urban developments have become more complex, for these reasons, the interest in the study of mega-event urbanization have significantly increased. This dissertation has researched the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games to analyze the China urban development model with playing Games and concepts. The dissertation first examines previous Olympic Games and their urbanization models, methods, impacts, and results. It then investigates on the existing literature on the 2008 Games urbanization and highlights existing research gap. After, the dissertation conducts independent research and data analysis and identifies the Beijing Olympic and China urban development model. The following section compares and contrasts Beijing's model from both international and national accounts and addresses this dissertation's theoretical contribution. The concluding section assesses the research findings and offer policy recommendations based on China's current context. The result of this dissertation provides an account of Beijing and China mega-event urbanization model that can assist future research by enriching the understanding of mega-event urbanization history in China. It demonstrates how a country that has no winter sports tradition used the mega-event to showcase its national narrative and to promote winter sports industries. A semiotic framework is developed to model China's country image as evaluative attributes and to elucidate how they are constructed through linguistic and visual resources in the theater, livestream, and video inserts. The analysis shows that the ceremony was narrated around four major themes--the world's China, People's China, the aesthetic China, and the modernized China. Instead of revealing a changeless, nostalgic and mythical China that speaks to a Western orientalistic imagination, these four themes work together to reshape a modern China identity, which brings the contrasting values of globalism, nationalism, Chinese traditional aesthetics, and neoliberalism into a coherent artistic performance. The characteristics of nation branding discourse reflect China's urban regeneration policies on the one hand, and public diplomacies during the COVID-19 pandemic on the other.

However, the audience in Beijing was only the most overt element of a global audience receiving the message of the Games. For this global audience, the Beijing performances were a harbinger of wider regional and international ambitions; a message of intent that pointed to a larger Chinese plan to a degree not seen since the Ming dynasty. New Chinese ambitions embrace both soft power and hard power. The actor in this political drama of international scope is the Chinese state and its political ambitions on the world stage. The Beijing Olympics can be seen as its opening act, and the audience as global. Rather than the kind of "morality" play that is typically used in China to educate the people in politics, this new production – a production on many levels – was one aimed at audiences all around the world, and one that was a calculated expression of realpolitik.
