Book excerpt: For the last decades problem of food insecurity has been outstanding challenge for most Sub Saharan countries. As a result of which these countries were forced to design strategies that they alleged it would enable their people to come out of the problem of food insecurity. Hence enhancing agricultural production and productivity is opted as the best alternative since it is believed that the rural community drives their income from their small farms. Informed by the above idea these countries are used to allocate huge amount of their annual budget to reverse the situation. Because the strategy neglected resource poor farmers, landless rural households and their livelihood strategies, failed to reduce hunger and rural poverty in those countries. Therefore, this book clearly identified what livelihood strategies rural households employ that enable them to be food secure or not and what factors determine their participation in the given livelihood activities The book provide valuable information to research and extension, rural development, institutions, policy and decision makers about how to improve rural livelihood and livelihood strategies.

Book excerpt: Inclusive growth and poverty reduction requires an understanding of the constraints to increasing productivity of the informal sector, which employs the majority of Zambians. Zambians working in this sector are poor, have little education, die young from avoidable diseases, and live predominantly in rural areas. Even if more opportunities for formal employment currently existed, this population would not be qualified for these jobs. Their productive inclusion in society, and making sure they can invest in their children's futures to break the intergenerational transmission of poverty, requires rural investment that can help unlock constraints to informal sector productivity. A recent review of the constraints that women face, relative to men, reveal that women's business performance is affected by a combination of contextual factors and gender differences. This qualitative study sought to understand : (a) the key livelihood strategies used by women and men in Zambia; (b) the key constraints that women and men face; (c) how these constraints shape the strategies that are available; and (d) what women and men understand about human rights. The research had a specific focus on identifying responses that could help to increase women's economic empowerment.

Book excerpt: The analysis of household resilience to food insecurity has become a key technical and evidence-based policy instrument for better tailoring development and humanitarian intervention designs. International development agencies must strengthen the capacity of vulnerable households to anticipate, cope with and adapt to shocks and stressors. Despite the humanitarian and development scope of household resilience strengthening, most resilience academic research and policies focused on protracted crises countries. Moreover, too little attention has been paid to in-depth gender inequality analysis in household resilience to food insecurity, and household food security. This paper aims to (i) analyse the key drivers of household resilience to food insecurity and (ii) assess differences in resilience capacity and food security indexes across male and female-headed households, and identify key drivers of these differentials in national, urban, and rural areas in the Gambia, by using Gambian Integrated Household Surveys on consumption expenditure and poverty-level assessment 2015–2016.

Yet, the vast majority of households in poor areas of the city experience food insecurity. This paper uses AFSUN data to examine the characteristics and drivers of food insecurity in Cape Town. While food insecurity correlates closely with income poverty and household structure, broader factors also impact upon urban food security, most notably urban design and market structure. Efforts to address urban food insecurity should therefore not simply target the household. Instead, a food systems approach is necessary, which considers supply chains, procurement, nutrition support programmes, public health, environmental sustainability, water and waste, the support of local enterprise and so on. Furthermore, this approach must consider the geography of the urban food system, in particular planning and zoning regulations regarding the location of both formal and informal food retail within low-income areas of the city.

Book excerpt: The Lusaka urban food security survey done by AFSUN as part of its baseline survey of 11 Southern African cities found that up to 93% of the households in the informal settlements, which house three-quarters of the Zambian capital’s population, were food insecure. A paltry 8% were food secure. Worse still, most of the households in the informal urban settlements of Lusaka did not only have poor access to food, they also consumed foods from a very narrow range of food groups. Their diets were dominated by cereals and therefore likely to be deficient in essential vitamins, minerals and proteins. The AFSUN survey shows clearly that urban households obtain their food mainly through the market and therefore stable macro-economic conditions are essential to their food security. Since urban household food security is positively associated with levels of income, promotion of decent employment is critical. Among the urgent measures AFSUN recommends to address Lusaka’s food insecurity are the promotion by government of decent employment, including labour-intensive public works programmes that would stimulate formal employment, and supplementary feeding programmes in clinics and schools.

Book excerpt: Food and nutrition security - identified via availability, access, utilization, and stability - and transitions to sustainable food systems are major discourses in the agro-food arena, as many countries today experience different forms of malnutrition simultaneously, such as child undernutrition, anemia among women, and adult obesity. Meanwhile, the triple burden of malnutrition (undernutrition, overnutrition, and micronutrient deficiency) is still widespread. Food Security and Nutrition explores integrated, context-specific approaches to food security challenges, emphasizing nutrition security as an integral component and addressing the implications of food content to food and nutrition security policies. Providing insight into these challenges through agricultural, policy, nutritional, geographic and sustainability lenses, Food Security and Nutrition is a valuable reference for food scientists and nutrition researchers working in food supply, food security, and nutrition security, and policy makers, investors, and other decision-makers seeking to address food insecurity around the world. Addresses nutrition security as part of the overall challenge of food security Explores contributing factors that impact both food and nutrition security Presents insights into effective policy development and implementation

Book excerpt: Several governments, researchers and development practitioners have identified the youth as an integral part of the strategy for reducing poverty and food insecurity in Africa. Despite youths being at the centre of food and nutrition security, their contribution to household food security remains understudied. The lack of such evidence has made it difficult to inform evidence-based policymaking and design of poverty and food insecurity reduction interventions. As a result, policy interventions are not effective in achieving the international goal of reducing poverty and food insecurity. Thus, the study investigates the contribution of rural youth livelihoods to household food security in Mashonaland East Province, Zimbabwe. A sample of 200 randomly selected youths was analysed using both descriptive and inferential statistics. The results show that agriculture was the main livelihood strategy, despite the being the least remunerative. Factors ranging from personal, socio-economic to livelihood capitals were found to have a statistically significant influence on the choice of livelihood strategy. Furthermore, the results indicated a high prevalence of food insecurity, most notably severe food insecurity. The high level of food insecurity was associated with the type of livelihood strategy, social economic characteristics, and livelihood capitals. The study findings suggest that effective rural youth interventions on food security should be guided by the type of livelihood strategy, youth socio-economic characteristics and livelihood capitals.
