En cas d'accident grave, ces structures ont pour mission d'aborber au maximum l'énergie de l'impact pour protéger les passagers. Elles sont constituées d'un stratifié multicouche composé d'un empilement de plusieurs sous-stratifiés dont les stratifiés carbone/époxy de cette étude. La capacité du matériau à absorber de l'énergie mécanique est essentiellement liée au caractère endommageable de sa microstructure. Afin de pouvoir optimiser le stratifié multicouche, on s'intéresse aux propriétés mécaniques et à l'endommagement des sous-stratifiés. Le comportement des stratifiés carbone/époxy dépend de plusieurs facteurs parmi lesquels figurent le procédé d'élaboration, le mode de chargement mécanique et la vitesse de solliciation. Dans ce contexte, le projet de recherche réalisé suit une approche pluridisiciplinaire ayant pour objectif d'établir un lien entre le procédé d'élaboration, la microstructure du matériau créé et les propriétés mécaniques en résultant. Cette approche se décline en trois thèmes abordés dans le présent travail. Un premier thème porte sur le procédé d'élaboration : le procédé conventionnel en autoclave est comparé à un procédé alternatif basé sur le chauffage par micro-ondes. Les deux autres thèses concernent la réponse du matériau à une sollication mécanique à vitesse élevée. L'influence de la vitesse sur le comportement mécanique du stratifié est analysée pour deux modes de chargement : la traction appliquée sous 45° par rapport au renfort (traction "hors axe") et la sollicitation en mode l entrainant le délaminage des plis. Les travaux effectués commprennent le développement de moyens expérimentaux ainsi que l'analyse des matériaux par des observations macroscopiques et microscopiques. Un intérêt particulier est porté aux phénomènes d'endomagement responsables de la capacité du matériau à abosrber l'énergie d'un crash.

Pour les chargements complexes, le comportement non linéaire des fibres (0°) rend très difficile l'utilisation de l'évolution des rigidités pour le suivi du dommage.

Dans la direction des fibres, notamment, il est du type élastique linéaire fragile. Le comportement de compression, quant à lui, semble différent, tout particulièrement dans le cas de fibres à très haute résistance. Ce comportement étant le plus souvent caractérise a partir d'essais de compression assez rudimentaires, l'interprétation des résultats est délicate et rend difficile la connaissance des modules et valeurs a rupture. Il apparaît nécessaire de mettre en ouvre un essai permettant d'avoir accès, de façon précise, au comportement de compression. C'est pourquoi un montage de flexion 4 points spécialement étudie pour les composites stratifies a été mis au point. Afin de solliciter l'éprouvette en flexion pure, ce montage a été reaalise au moyen d'éléments déformables qui permettent d'éliminer les sollicitations parasites, et de ne pas perturber le champ de contrainte au voisinage des points d'application des efforts. Des essais ont été réalises sur deux matériaux a matrice époxy (bsl 914) et fibres de carbone a haute et très haute résistance (t300 et im6). Ils ont mis en évidence un comportement de compression élastique non linéaire fragile. Il n'y a donc pas d'endommagement dans la direction des fibres. Les résultats obtenus confirment cependant la faiblesse relative de ce type de matériau en compression, avec une chute d'environ 20% de la contrainte a rupture et de 30% du module. Un modèle micro-mecanique, prenant en compte les défauts de rectitude des fibres permet d'expliquer la perte de rigidité observée en compression. Son identification est cependant délicate, et c'est un modèle plus simple qui est développe, identifie et valide. Les résultats obtenus sont très satisfaisants, et son intégration à un code de calcul ne présente pas de difficultés particulières

Ce modèle est développé pour les composites stratifies carbone/époxy, objet de notre étude, a l'échelle du pli élémentaire. Les applications visées concernent l'utilisation de ces matériaux pour garnir les panneaux de satellite géostationnaire. Outre des sollicitations mécaniques, ces structures sont alors soumises au cours de leur vie orbitale à un cyclage thermique. Par rapport aux études antérieures concernant le comportement en température et qui permettent de traiter des stratifies de type 0,90, on s'intéresse ici a la description du comportement en température de n'importe quel type de stratifie. Une première extension des modèles en temperature a été d'introduire les contraintes d'origine thermique et l'évolution des caractéristiques élastiques en fonction de la température. Pour utiliser les résultats de la littérature, une comparaison entre la densité de microfissures issues de modèles micromécaniques et les variables de type perte de rigidité provenant de modèle développé a l'échelle méso qui est celle du pli élémentaire est effectuée. Elle ne permet pas d'obtenir d'informations suffisamment précises mais laisse supposer que d'autres couplages thermomécaniques interviennent. L'identification complète du modèle d'endommagement avec couplages thermomécaniques a été réalisée en adaptant en température la méthodologie expérimentale d'essais mise au point lors de précédentes études menées au LMT sur ce modèle. Ces essais ont été réalisés au CNES-Toulouse et ont nécessité différents empilements (0#8, 0,90#2#s, 45#2#s, 67,5#2#s) testés à différentes températures (120c, 60c, 20c, 20c, 60c, 80c, 120c). Les résultats des essais et de l'identification montrent qu'une adaptation simple du modèle propose pour la température ambiante donne une description satisfaisante du comportement mécanique en température du pli élémentaire des stratifies carbone/époxy
