Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mechanics of Continuous Media and Analysis of Structures is a six-chapter book that begins by elucidating the mechanics of solid continuous media. The text then describes the finite elements method, which undoubtedly dominates the methods used for structural analysis. Subsequent chapters explain the variational principles in linear elasticity, vibration of linear structure, non-linear deformations, and the shell theory. This book will be valuable to all those who need certain theoretical developments in mechanics, including mechanical engineers, economists, and mathematicians.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elastic, Plastic and Yield Design of Reinforced Structures presents a whole set of new results which have been published by the authors over the last 30 years in the field of continuum solid mechanics applied to the analysis and design of reinforced civil engineering structures. The focus is on the development and application of up-scaling/homogenization methods in the design of such composite structures, with a special emphasis on the plastic behavior and ultimate strength of materials. The specificity of the book is highlighted by at least two completely innovative concepts which lie at the very heart of the book's originality: the elaboration of a fully comprehensive homogenization-based method for the design of reinforced structures (and not only materials), through the study of macroscopic behavior, and the development of a multiphase model for materials reinforced by linear inclusions, which considerably extends the range of applicability of the classical homogenization procedure. - Sums up almost thirty years of original research in the field of mechanics applied to the analysis and design of reinforced civil engineering structures - Focuses on the application of upscaling/homogenization methods to the design of civil engineering structures - Highlights the elaboration of a fully comprehensive homogenization-based method for the design of reinforced structures (and not only materials), through the concept of macroscopic behavior - Features development of a multiphase model for materials reinforced by linear inclusions, which considerably extends the range of applicability of the classical homogenization procedure.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The question of inclusion of local effects in the analysis of structures is currently one of prime importance for engineering design. The classical computational approaches are not readily adapted to take local effects into account and appropriate treatments are therefore necessary. Providing an introduction to and survey of the specific computational methods, this book contains 16 papers, most of which were presented at the EUROMECH Colloquium `Inclusion of Local Effects in the Analysis of Structures', held in France in 1984. The book begins with the various theories which allow the separation and determination of local and global effects. The next group of papers discuss edge effects for composite structures. The third part comprises two papers concerning dynamic problems and points the way towards non-conventional local effects in structural mechanics. The last part deals with general numerical methods, especially for effects due to large local variations of geometry.

One of those consists in modelling the structural behaviour through a network of straight bars, whether in compression (struts) or in tension (ties), and in expressing its static equilibrium through classic graphic statics reciprocal diagrams: a form diagram describing the geometry of a strut-and-tie network and a force diagram representing the vector equilibrium of its nodes. When it comes to statically indeterminate structures, the lower-bound theorem of Plasticity avoids any overestimation of the load bearing capacity, which allows the designer to select one of the possible equilibrium states. Considering that a limit state analysis of these indeterminate equilibriums can better support the design process when it shares the same graphical environment, the thesis consists in proposing a graphical methodology for constructing a parametric force diagram resulting from the combination of independent force diagrams. The stress distribution is then modified by manipulating the relative position of some vertices of the force diagram until it reaches limit states; hence, the possibility of identifying the collapse state and the corresponding load bearing capacity of various types of structures such as pin-jointed trusses, beams or masonry arches. The analysis of the admissible geometrical domains for these specific vertices allows a better understanding of the behaviour of statically indeterminate structures at limit state and may be helpful when designing them.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first theme concerns the plastic buckling of structures in the spirit of Hill’s classical approach. Non-bifurcation and stability criteria are introduced and post-bifurcation analysis performed by asymptotic development method in relation with Hutchinson’s work. Some recent results on the generalized standard model are given and their connection to Hill’s general formulation is presented. Instability phenomena of inelastic flow processes such as strain localization and necking are discussed. The second theme concerns stability and bifurcation problems in internally damaged or cracked colids. In brittle fracture or brittle damage, the evolution law of crack lengths or damage parameters is time-independent like in plasticity and leads to a similar mathematical description of the quasi-static evolution. Stability and non-bifurcation criteria in the sense of Hill can be again obtained from the discussion of the rate response.
