Book excerpt: Analog CMOS Microelectronic Circuits describes novel approaches for analog electronic interfaces design, especially for resistive and capacitive sensors showing a wide variation range, with the intent to cover a lack of solutions in the literature. After an initial description of sensors and main definitions, novel electronic circuits, which do not require any initial calibrations, are described; they show both AC and DC excitation voltage for the employed sensor, and use both voltage-mode and current-mode approaches. The proposed interfaces can be realized both as prototype boards, for fast characterization (in this sense, they can be easily implemented by students and researchers), and as integrated circuits, using modern low-voltage low-power design techniques (in this case, specialist analog microelectronic researchers will find them useful). The primary audience of Analog CMOS Microelectronic Circuits are: analog circuit designers, sensor companies, Ph.D. students on analog microelectronics, undergraduate and postgraduate students in electronic engineering.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume concentrates on three topics: mixed analog--digital circuit design, sensor interface circuits and communication circuits. The book comprises six papers on each topic of a tutorial nature aimed at improving the design of analog circuits. The book is divided into three parts. Part I: Mixed Analog--Digital Circuit Design considers the largest growth area in microelectronics. Both standard designs and ASICs have begun integrating analog cells and digital sections on the same chip. The papers cover topics such as groundbounce and supply-line spikes, design methodologies for high-level design and actual mixed analog--digital designs. Part II: Sensor Interface Circuits describes various types of signal conditioning circuits and interfaces for sensors. These include interface solutions for capacitive sensors, sigma--delta modulation used to combine a microprocessor compatible interface with on chip CMOS sensors, injectable sensors and responders, signal conditioning circuits and sensors combined with indirect converters. Part III: Communication Circuits concentrates on systems and implemented circuits for use in personal communication systems. These have applications in cordless telephones and mobile telephone systems for use in cellular networks. A major requirement for these systems is low power consumption, especially when operating in standby mode, so as to maximise the time between battery recharges.

Book excerpt: This book serves as the first guideline of the integrative approach, optimal for our new and young generations. Recent technology advancements in computer vision, IoT sensors, and analytics open the door to highly impactful innovations and applications as a result of effective and efficient integration of those. Such integration has brought to scientists and engineers a new approach —the integrative approach. This offers far more rapid development and scalable architecting when comparing to the traditional hardcore developmental approach. Featuring biomedical and healthcare challenges including COVID-19, we present a collection of carefully selective cases with significant added- values as a result of integrations, e.g., sensing with AI, analytics with different data sources, and comprehensive monitoring with many different sensors, while sustaining its readability.

Book excerpt: The primary goal of this thesis is to develop a prototype device that can be used to demonstrate some key and fundamental concepts related to the disciplines of computer and electrical engineering to freshman engineering students. This objective is achieved through the development of a heart rate monitor that primarily consists of a sensor module for heart beat detection and a Microchip PIC-microcontroller based development board for heart rate calculation. The central element of the sensor module is an optical detection system that consists of a light-emitting diode and photodiode setup to detect heart beat from a measurement site with strong pulse like a fingertip. The obtained heart beat signal is then passed through multiple amplification and filtering stages to obtain a clean and strong heart beat signal. Using this optical sensor module implemented on a printed circuit board (PCB) we can demonstrate several concepts related to electrical engineering such as: basic electronics, semiconductor devices, analog circuit design, optical electronics, PCB design, etc. The voltage signal obtained from the sensor module is sent to a Microchip Explorer 16 development board for further signal processing and heart rate calculation. The development board contains a 16-bit PIC microcontroller with a built in 10-bit analog-to-digital converter that is used to digitize the analog voltage signal and calculate heart rate as beats per minute using a heart rate calculation algorithm. The calculated heart rate is finally displayed on an alphanumeric liquid-crystal display display that is included on the development board. This module of the prototype heart rate monitoring system is designed to be interactive and provide user-control to the heart rate calculation process while demonstrating some concepts related to computer engineering such as: microcontrollers, embedded systems, software development, hardware/software co-design, etc. The heart rate monitor developed in this research work has thus been designed to present a prototype device that can be used to demonstrate several key concepts related to computer and electrical engineering and this thesis document contains design and implementation details related to the development of this device.

Book excerpt: The motivation for starting the work described in this book was the interest that Hewlett-Packard's microwave circuit designers had in simulation techniques that could tackle the problem of finding steady state solutions for nonlinear circuits, particularly circuits containing distributed elements such as transmission lines. Examining the problem of computing steady-state solutions in this context has led to a collection of novel numerical algorithms which we have gathered, along with some background material, into this book. Although we wished to appeal to as broad an audience as possible, to treat the subject in depth required maintaining a narrow focus. Our compromise was to assume that the reader is familiar with basic numerical methods, such as might be found in [dahlquist74] or [vlach83], but not assume any specialized knowledge of methods for steady-state problems. Although we focus on algorithms for computing steady-state solutions of analog and microwave circuits, the methods herein are general in nature and may find use in other disciplines. A number of new algorithms are presented, the contributions primarily centering around new approaches to harmonic balance and mixed frequency-time methods. These methods are described, along with appropriate background material, in what we hope is a reasonably satisfying blend of theory, practice, and results. The theory is given so that the algorithms can be fully understood and their correctness established.

This book was released on 2018 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Emerging applications in the field of machine vision, deep learning and scientific simulation require high computational speed and are run on platforms that are size, weight and power constrained. With the transistor scaling coming to an end, existing digital hardware architectures will not be able to meet these ever-increasing demands. Analog computation with its rich set of primitives and inherent parallel architecture can be faster, more efficient and compact for some of these applications. The major contribution of this work is to show that analog processing can be a viable solution to this problem. This is demonstrated in the three parts of the dissertation. In the first part of the dissertation, we demonstrate that analog processing can be used to solve the problem of stereo correspondence. Novel modifications to the algorithms are proposed which improves the computational speed and makes them efficiently implementable in analog hardware. The analog domain implementation provides further speedup in computation and has lower power consumption than a digital implementation. In the second part of the dissertation, a prototype of an analog processor was developed using commercially available off-the-shelf components. The focus was on providing experimental results that demonstrate functionality and to show that the performance of the prototype for low-level and mid-level image processing tasks is equivalent to a digital implementation. To demonstrate improvement in speed and power consumption, an integrated circuit design of the analog processor was proposed, and it was shown that such an analog processor would be faster than state-of-the-art digital and other analog processors. In the third part of the dissertation, a memristor-CMOS analog co-processor that can perform floating point vector matrix multiplication (VMM) is proposed. VMM computation underlies some of the major applications. To demonstrate the working of the analog co-processor at a system level, a new tool called PSpice Systems Option is used. It is shown that the analog co-processor has a superior performance when compared to the projected performances of digital and analog processors. Using the new tool, various application simulations for image processing and solution to partial differential equations are performed on the co-processor model.

Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and dis seminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis, (CINDAS) *at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dissemination phases of the ac tivity was transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this joint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volume were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 19 (thesis year 1974) a total of 10,045 theses titles from 20 Canadian and 209 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for theses titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this important annual reference work. The organization of Volume 19 is identical to that of past years. It consists of theses titles arranged by discipline and by university within each discipline.

This includes the way people are living, what they do to stay healthy as well as a profound, well-informed diagnosis and appropriate treatment in case of disease. To achieve these goals, modern medicine is provided with a large variety of tools to assess a patient's health state and collect the information required for a proper diagnosis and treatment, which is tailored to the patient's needs. Many of these available tools use signals either generated by the human body, for example, electroencephalogram (EEG) and electrocardiogram (ECG), or by interacting with the human body while traversing it like microwaves or reflected visible light that is recorded by a video camera. The biosignals recorded by the available and newly developed methods have to be processed to extract the information about the patient's condition and, analyzed tissue and cells. This book presents a small selection of the recent developments in the field of biosignal processing. The covered diagnostic tools and methods include the assessment of respiratory state through gait analysis, the contactless monitoring of cardiovascular and respiratory parameters using microwaves, a non-linear approach to extract the fetal ECG from non-invasive abdominal recordings, identification of epileptic networks from pre-surgical neurophysiological recordings and an improved method to obtain and validate the copy number alterations parameter, which are considered an important marker in cancer classification.
