Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The supernatant of the centrifuged palm oil mill effluent was anaerobically treated in a 25 litre agitated digester. The starting COD of the feed effluent was fixed at 16,500 mg/l. Studies were conducted at both mesophilic (30 and 35 C) and thermophilic (55 C) tempe for various hydraulic retention times. It was found that for retention times of 10 days or more, most of the process parameters remain relatively constant. Under mesophilic conditions the pH was about 7.0, volatile acids at around 1,000 mg/l and alkalinity in the of 4,000 to 4,500 mg/l. In the thermophilic case, the pH was higher at between 7.9 and 8.3, volatile acids of 1,500 to 2,000 mg/l and alkalinity varying between 2,500 and 4,000 mg/l. Over 80% COD reduction could be obtained but only 50% of the total solids was degraded for both digestions.

Book excerpt: Anaerobic biotechnology is a cost-effective and sustainable means of treating waste and wastewaters that couples treatment processes with the reclamation of useful by-products and renewable biofuels. This means of treating municipal, agricultural, and industrial wastes allows waste products to be converted to value-added products such as biofuels, biofertilizers, and other chemicals. Anaerobic Biotechnology for Bioenergy Production: Principles and Applications provides the reader with basic principles of anaerobic processes alongside practical uses of anaerobic biotechnology options. This book will be a valuable reference to any professional currently considering or working with anaerobic biotechnology options.

This book was released on 2002-02-01 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The IWA Task Group for Mathematical Modelling of Anaerobic Digestion Processes was created with the aim to produce a generic model and common platform for dynamic simulations of a variety of anaerobic processes. This book presents the outcome of this undertaking and is the result of four years collaborative work by a number of international experts from various fields of anaerobic process technology. The purpose of this approach is to provide a unified basis for anaerobic digestion modelling. It is hoped this will promote increased application of modelling and simulation as a tool for research, design, operation and optimisation of anaerobic processes worldwide. This model was developed on the basis of the extensive but often disparate work in modelling and simulation of anaerobic digestion systems over the last twenty years. In developing ADM1, the Task Group have tried to establish common nomenclature, units and model structure, consistent with existing anaerobic modelling literature and the popular activated sludge models (See Activated Sludge Models ASM1, ASM2, ASM2d and ASM3, IWA Publishing, 2000, ISBN: 1900222248). As such, it is intended to promote widespread application of simulation from domestic (wastewater and sludge) treatment systems to specialised industrial applications. Outputs from the model include common process variables such gas flow and composition, pH, separate organic acids, and ammonium. The structure has been devised to encourage specific extensions or modifications where required, but still maintain a common platform. During development the model has been successfully tested on a range of systems from full-scale waste sludge digestion to laboratory-scale thermophilic high-rate UASB reactors. The model structure is presented in a readily applicable matrix format for implementation in many available differential equation solvers. It is expected that the model will be available as part of commercial wastewater simulation packages. ADM1 will be a valuable information source for practising engineers working in water treatment (both domestic and industrial) as well as academic researchers and students in Environmental Engineering and Science, Civil and Sanitary Engineering, Biotechnology, and Chemical and Process Engineering departments. Book excerpt: Residues from agriculture and the food industry consist of many and varied wastes, in total accounting for over 250 million tonnes of waste per year in the UK alone. Biotechnological processing of these residues would allow these waste products to be used as a resource, with tremendous potential. An extensive range of valuable and usable products can be recovered from what was previously considered waste: including fuels, feeds and pharmaceutical products. In this way Biotechnology can offer many viable alternatives to the disposal of agricultural waste, producing several new products in the process. This book presents up-to-date information on a biotechnology approach for the utilisation of agro-industrial residues, presenting chapters with detailed information on materials and bioconversion technology to obtain products of economic importance: The production of industrial products using agro-industrial residues as substrates The biotechnological potential of agro-industrial residues for bioprocesses Enzymes degrading agro-industrial residues and their production Bioconversion of agro-industrial residues. Written by experts in Biotechnological processing of Agro-Industrial Residues, this book will provide useful information for academic researchers and industry scientists working in biotechnology, waste management, agriculture and the food industry.

Book excerpt: A semi-continuous anaerobic digester (4 litre) was used to degrade palm oil mill effluent (POME) under mesophilic condition at 37 C with the use of flocculants to cause good biomass aggregation. Maximum achievable loading of 10 kg COD/m3/day (hydraulic retention time of 6 days) with soluble COD removal of 91% was achieved. This rate is significantly faster than the rates achieved in previously reported mesophilic studies. [Author's abstract].

Book excerpt: Written as a practical introduction to biogas plant design and operation, this book fills a huge gap by presenting a systematic guide to this emerging technology -- information otherwise only available in poorly intelligible reports by US governmental and other official agencies. The author draws on teaching material from a university course as well as a wide variety of industrial biogas projects he has been involved with, thus combining didactical skill with real-life examples. Alongside biological and technical aspects of biogas generation, this timely work also looks at safety and legal aspects as well as environmental considerations.

Accounting for variable seasonal crop availability, the anaerobic reactor would be able to generate, without supplementary heating, 2.77 x 10 6 m3 of biogas, or 1.80 x 10 6 m3 of methane, annually. After introducing the plantation and milling processes, the book focuses on the wastes generated solely from plantation and milling activities, as reducing waste from these two sectors will enhance the overall sustainability of the entire palm oil industry eco-system. It then evaluates the sustainability of current practices and elaborates on technological developments in the two sectors, before critically assessing options to treat wastes generated from the plantation and milling process. To properly contextualise the work, it also includes a section on socio-economical sustainability, as well as an industrial case study. A valuable resource for academics interested in the evolution of sustainable waste management strategies within this industrial context, the book also appeals to practitioners in the field who wish to improve the sustainability of their particular plantation or mill.

This book was released on 2010 with total page 62 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The evaluation of anaerobic digestion process of palm oil mill effluent (POME) was carried out in a laboratory-scale membrane anaerobic system (MAS). The MAS consists of a cross-flow Ultra-filtration membrane for solid-liquid separation and operational pressure of 1.5 to 2 bars. An enrichment mixed culture of methanogenic bacteria was developed and acclimatized in the digester for three days when the POME is fed into the 30 L digester combining Ultrafiltration (UF) membrane MAS is a modern bioreactor and was used for the rapid biotransformation of organic matter to Methane gas with the help of Methanogenic bacteria. Two concentration ratios of 50% and 100% of the raw POME were studied. The hydraulic retention time (HRT) ranged between 1 and 4 days. Throughout the experiment, the removal efficiency of COD was between 78.81% and 81.44%. The methane gas production rate was 0.673 L/g COD/d to 0.974 L/g COD/d. The effluent flow rates for the two ratios were found as 10.31 L/d and 21.75 L/d respectively. The pH was between 6.8 and 7.7. The membrane anaerobic system, MAS treatment efficiency was greatly affected by solid retention time, hydraulic retention time and organic loading rates. In this study, membrane fouling and polarization at the membrane surface played a significant role in the formation of the strongly attached cake layer limiting membrane permeability.
