Book excerpt: This anthology includes translations of a number of original poems from each of the ten collections of poetry published to date by Spanish poet Ana Maria Fagundo. Its goal is to provide a representative sample of Fagundo's work for an English audience. With the basic tenet of phenomenology as scaffold, the introduction of this anthology elucidates Fagundo's poetic writing as a process whereby the abstract is transformed into a concrete experience through the speaker's own self and body. From Brotes/Buds in 1965 until Trasterrado Marzo/March Beyond in 1999, Fagundo's poetry is an ongoing dialogue with the poetic word. Fagundo's poetic speaker looks into essences, but only in order to reintegrate them into existence. There is no Truth or Beauty or Good out there for which this poet strives, but a truth that each poet articulates in his or her own way. Hers is an aesthetic enterprise, which implies the ethical obligation to affirm life. Candelas Gala is Professor and Chair of the Department of Romance Languages at Wake Forest University.

Dichos intentos remiten, por un lado, al concepto del poder creativo de la palabra de Dios en el Génesis, y por otro, a la insuficiencia de la palabra de la cual se han quejado los escritores a través de los siglos. Como indica Gardeta-Healey: "la poesía de Ana María Fagundo nace dentro de la corriente poética de Salinas y Valente donde la palabra es el instrumento base de experimentación del descubrimiento del propio poeta." Las preguntas de Fagundo sobre las posibilidades o límites de la palabra continúan la búsqueda metapoética iniciada por diversos poetas en la década de los 50. Fagundo llega a aplicar la palabra a sus exploraciones existenciales. La palabra es un instrumento ontológico: al nombrar llegamos a saber y queremos saber más. Así lo explica Hierro: "La poesía es dar nombre a las cosas: el nombre nuevo por él que serán, en adelante, conocidas. Es descubrir el nombre verdadero, tapado por los nombres falsos". Cada vez que nombramos, nos apropiamos de un fruto más del árbol de conocimiento. Con la palabra Fagundo se busca a sí misma para definir su personalidad como ser humano, como mujer y como poeta. La palabra en Fagundo, según Gardeta-Healey, adquiere un valor connotativo en otros sistemas de relación para alcanzar más profundización introspectiva en su desviación simbólica. La palabra satisface a la poeta como un medio de conocimiento, o al menos le parece el mejor modo de llegar a la plenitud del saber. Tal vez es por eso que algunos críticos la clasifican como "poeta del conocimiento".
