Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atlantic Canada lobster fisheries have many common characteristics, of which the following are of concern: high landings, based essentially on new immature recruits; increasing fishing pressure; inadequate enforcement; and an over-dependence on scientific analysis. In addition, the fishery is divided into 47 different Lobster Fishing Areas, whose management measures can differ from one area to the next without considering the conservation spillover effect between areas. This report presents results of an examination of the whole Atlantic lobster management system, conducted through stakeholder meetings, public consultations, discussions with appropriate experts, and reviews of industry submissions. The report begins with some background information on lobster biology and management. It then analyses the current lobster resource situation and other conservation issues facing the Atlantic lobster fishery. Finally, it recommends a mechanism for resolving conservation issues, including a definition of lobster conservation with related objectives; conservation principles; a conservation strategy; a more appropriate geographic basis for considering lobster conservation strategies; and a series of tool kits of conservation measures that can be implemented selectively to meet conservation objectives and targets. The appendix includes a glossary, a summary of consultations, lobster fishery statistics, and a summary of the international lobster situation.

Book excerpt: In April 1988 a major in-depth study of the Scotia-Fundy lobster fishery was announced by the federal government to review all the major issues facing the industry and address the long-term social and economic viability of the fishery and of the communities which depend on it. The study would include the biological, licensing, management, marketing, and enforcements aspects. This study contains a comprehensive overview of the fishery, emphasizing recent developments. It examines the community base in which the fishery takes place and analyzes the resource according to current scientific understanding. It examines the harvesting, processing and marketing components and describes the DFO management regime and its related costs. On the basis of an extensive consultative process, with generally good participation by the industry, it presents the current views and concerns of fishermen on issues they consider of primary importance.

Book excerpt: A regional assessment of the lobster fishery in Lobster Fishing Area 25, along the Gulf shores of Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia, was conducted on February 3, 2004 in Moncton, New Brunswick. The purpose of the meeting was to review the information and interpretation of the data relating to the lobster fishery and biology, and to infer the status of the resource. Analysis of the effects of past and possible management actions on the biology and status of lobster were presented to show the type of information and the analyses that could be conducted to assess management options.

Grant This hands-on approach provides guidance to the step-by-step applications of systems analysis and simulation to questions about ecological systems. At the same time, it explains general principles without requiring that readers have a strong background in mathematics, statistics, or computer science. Chapter 1 traces the development of systems ecology introducing basic concepts, while Chapters 2 through 5 present the four phases of systems analysis: conceptual model formulation, quantitative specification of the model, model validation, and model use. 1986 (0 471-89236-X) 338 pp. Bioeconomic Modelling and Fisheries Management Colin W. Clark Discusses the management of commercial marine fisheries and the relationship between the economic forces affecting the fishing industry and the biological factors that determine the production and supply of fish in the sea. Topics focus on methods of preventing overfishing and overcapitalization, economically effective and practical forms of regulation, management of developing fisheries, natural fluctuations of fish stocks, and complexities of marine ecosystems. 1985 (0 471-87394-2) 291 pp. Methods in Marine Zooplankton Ecology Makoto Omori and Tsutomu Ikeda Encompassing basic principles, procedures, and research problems, this book serves as a complete guide to current methods used in the study of marine zooplankton. The techniques are equally applicable to small organisms and to the larval stages of larger, commercially important organisms. Chapters start with a brief, but well-summarized introduction to zooplankton, followed by field sampling strategies and laboratory methods, and then conclude with estimates of productivity and analysis of community structure. Each method is described in detail, including a discussion of the problems inherent in using it. 1984 (0 471-80107-0) 322 pp.
