Book excerpt: The objective is to develop a domain decomposition method via overlapping/embedding the component grids, which is to be used by upwind, multi-grid, finite volume solution algorithms. A computer code, given the name MaGGiE (Multi-Geometry Grid Embedder) is developed to meet this objective. MaGGiE takes independently generated component grids as input, and automatically constructs the composite mesh and interpolation data, which can be used by the finite volume solution methods with or without multigrid convergence acceleration. Six demonstrative examples showing various aspects of the overlap technique are presented and discussed. These cases are used for developing the procedure for overlapping grids of different topologies, and to evaluate the grid connection and interpolation data for finite volume calculations on a composite mesh. Time fluxes are transferred between mesh interfaces using a trilinear interpolation procedure. Conservation losses are minimal at the interfaces using this method. The multi-grid solution algorithm, using the coaser grid connections, improves the convergence time history as compared to the solution on composite mesh without multi-gridding. Book excerpt: The simulation of compressible fluid flows describing engineering applications using finite difference or finite volume methods is complicated by both the difficulty in representing complex geometries using rectangular grids and by the memory size and speed of modern supercomputers. The composite overlapping grid approach can be used to represent complicated geometries using a set of logically rectangular grids, thus allowing the use of finite difference or finite volume methods to approximate the partial differential equations. This approach can also be used to accomplish local mesh refinement for the purpose of resolving locally detailed behavior in the flow fields. This paper discusses the composite overlapping grid method, in particular presenting the modifications necessary to the standard finite volume approach in order to use these grids. Computed examples from compressible hypersonic flow are present as well. 15 refs., 4 figs.

Book excerpt: Abstract: "Efficient and robust multigrid solvers for anisotropic problems typically use either semi-coarsened grids or implicit smoothers -- line relaxation in 2D and plane relaxation in 3D. However, both of these may be difficult to implement in codes using multi-block structured grids where there may be no natural definition of a global 'line' or 'plane'. These multi-block structured grids are often used in fluid dynamic applications to capture complex geometries and/or to facilitate parallel processing. In this paper, we investigate the performance of multigrid algorithms using implicit smoothers within the blocks of a such a [sic] grid. By looking at a model problem, the 2-D anisotropic diffusion equation, we show that true multigrid efficiency is achieved only when the block sizes are proportional to the strength of the anisotropy. Further, the blocks must overlap and the size of the overlap must again be proportional to the strength of the anisotropy."

Book excerpt: The solution of elliptic partial differential equations on composite overlapping grids using multigrid is discussed. An approach is described that provides a fast and memory efficient scheme for the solution of boundary value problems in complex geometries. The key aspects of the new scheme are an automatic coarse grid generation algorithm, an adaptive smoothing technique for adjusting residuals on different component grids, and the use of local smoothing near interpolation boundaries. Other important features include optimizations for Cartesian component grids, the use of over-relaxed Red-Black smoothers and the generation of coarse grid operators through Galerkin averaging. Numerical results in two and three dimensions show that very good multigrid convergence rates can be obtained for both Dirichlet and Neumann/mixed boundary conditions. A comparison to Krylov based solvers shows that the multigrid solver can be much faster and require significantly less memory.
