Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of United States History The old method of teaching history by as signing a certain number of pages in the text book to be memorized, is, we are glad to be able to say, pretty generally a thing of the past, having been discarded by all progressive educators. The topical method has found favor because it is the method which devel ops the student's individuality, and makes it possible for him to compare the views of differ ent authors, thus doing away with the diffi culty some teachers experience from diversity of text books. It is the best because it teaches the pupil to think and compare as well as to remember facts. When carried to its full de velopment the topical method becomes the outline method, which combines with the ads vantages possessed by the topical method many which it does not possess. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Writing of History, an Introduction to Historical Method This volume is not a revised edition of my Outline of Historical Method; it is an entirely new work. It was written for college students who are beginning their studies in historical research, for teachers of history who have had no critical historical training, and for students of history who are hoping to find in' private study some compensation for opportuni ties not enjoyed in college. This book does not as pire to fill the place of Bernheim's Lehrbuch, but rather to guide the student through his first steps in research, and to prepare him for the study of Bern heim. In a word, it is an introduction to bistori cal method. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Methods and Outlines in United States History Now why should we study history at all? First, it possesses the greatest guidance value among the several branches. There is much truth in the old saying, History repeats itself, and that ages differ more in kind than in degree. Where one age develops a fact of civilization in a certain way, or works out an advanced position for man, it will do it much the same way another time. There are certain inevitable truths controlling the ages, and when an age repeats itself, the corre sponding truth will be found leading its move ments. The things that killed Greece would kill America; the force that united the world under Rome, would unite the world again. The ele ments that destroyed Rome, would destroy any empire in any age. A late profound scholar and historian has said The present is the fruit Of the past, and the germ of the future. NO work can stand unless it grows out Of the real wants Of the age and strikes firm root in the soil Of history. No one who tramples on the rights Of a past gen cration can claim the regard of its posterity History will disregard him who disregards her. Set at naught the lessons Of history, and no man shall wield any lasting influence. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Method in History: For Teachers and Students To state the matter negatively, the aim has not been to discuss devices and external manipulations in teaching history; the term method is not even intended to suggest diagrams, chronological charts, or expedients of like nature. But something far more fundamental has been the aim: the determining factors in method and not the determined - the principal 'and not the accidental - ones have -been sought for and put to work at the problem. Whether diagrams, outlines, maps, and so on are to be, used in teaching history cannot be decided by the whim of the teacher or by some current fashion in teach ing the subject, but is to be decided, like other questions about devices and expedients, by an appeal to principles. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outline Guide to American History by the Source and Library Method The problems before us today are the legacy of those who have preceded us, - the results of their successes or failures. This makes history a living science, no longer to be regarded as a mere culture study, dependent upon the 'memory alone. Today the genuine study of history demands the exercise of all the mental faculties in determining motives, com paring situations and drawing conclusions. This can not be done by reading one meager text book. Dif ferent authors must be read to get different points of view. Better still is the present tendency to send the pupil directly to the original source, whether it be a newspaper clipping, a speech, a diary account, a letter or a government record. How much more meaning the Compromise of 1850 has when one reads the speeches and debates of that time! The original sources are constantly being made more available to the student. Every teacher should own, and may the time soon come when every pupil may own, the sheldon-barnes American history, or some similar collection. The following Outline Guide is putin print for the Convenience of the Iowa State Normal students, but may possibly be useful to others. It is not intended that any one student shall use all the references given, but different students using different books will bring a variety of opinions to the class, whichmust be discussed and accounted for. Six or eight good texts have been cited throughout, and such other books as have been found most helpful. A list of the books referred to with the publishers' names is given for the use of any who may be selecting libraries for school or private use. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Guide to Methods and Observation in History: Studies in High School Observation The outlines herewith presented have grown out of the necessities of a course conducted by the writer in the training of teachers in the University of Michigan. The course has been styled Methods and High School Observations in History. It has been open only to seniors and graduate students who have specialized in history and who expect to teach that subject in high schools. The work has consisted of one class meeting per week for eighteen weeks, and of twenty hour - obser vations of history teaching in the Ann Arbor High School. The outlines, therefore, were designed to serve as a guide to these observations and as a basis for subsequent dis eussions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Library Methods Applied to State Histories: Outlines, References, Questions It has long been conceded that History can be safely studied only when the student compares the statements of many writers. The famous report of the Committee of Seven urges the use of the Library Method in all study of History. This book aims to make such a study of the History of Illinois possible by providing a means of reaching the best authorities in giving an abundance of exact references to authentic books which can be found in most local libraries. As will be noted, the plan of the book covers pages of outlines, of references, of questions, and blank space upon which to_ record notes. The pages of outlines are only sketches - they make no pretensions to being complete chapters in history. Only enough matter is given to determine a desire to gain more, While the explicit references make further search possible. The questions are designed to test knowledge, to suggest and direct more thorough investigation, and to excite discussion. This opportunity to weigh and balance authorities develops an historical judgment which is, itself, only second to an acquaintance acquired with historical facts. The answer to the questions may be found, if not in the outlines, then in some one or all of the given references. This book was released on 2017-12-06 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Syllabus and Note Book for Ancient History The fundamental problem of the student in history courses in the secondary school is how to study efficiently. The fundamental problem of every teacher of history in high schools is how to teach the student to study. One of the most favorable signs of the times in secondary education is the tendency to emphasize this phase, and to aid in its solution from the administrative standpoint by introducing various plans for supervised study. Unsupervised study is inefficient study. As to what form the supervision shall take, there is room for difference of opinion. Local conditions may make many ideal plans impossible under the circumstances. As to the need for supervising and controlling the study methods of the student, however, there is no room for difference of opinion. In the hope of assisting history teachers to solve this problem, this notebook has been prepared. It is the outcome of the authors own teaching experience, and the principles embodied in it have been successfully tested in practice. Six notebooks are planned in this series, some of them yet in preparation, each to furnish the basis for a semesters work. The plan of the course embodies the recent tendency to subordinate the Ancient and Mediaeval History and to greatly extend the time devoted to Modern and American History and Civics. The content of each semesters work is as follows: 1. Civilization and History of the Ancient World (to about 800 A.D.) 2. Civilization and Development of Mediaeval Europe (to about1648). 3.Modern European History to the close of the Napoleonic Wars, including American Colonial History. 4. The 19th Century in Europe. 5. American National History, 1783. 6.American Government and Civics. About 70 lessons are planned in each semesters work, each of which is intended to serve as the topic for one recitation. Each syllabus consists of an outline, and various other helps which are self-explanatory. The instructions on "How to Study" are the result of the authors experience with high school freshmen and sophomores during a supervised study period daily of 30 minutes. It is believed that the principles embodied in these instructions are sound, and that the students will find it helpful to follow them closely. The teacher should see that these methods are being used: The instructions are divided into the following sections: 1. How to study the textbook. 2. Reading in other books - source books and secondary works. 3. Notebook exercises - maps, themes, outlines. 4. Historical Fiction. 5. How we know about the past. The first section is an organized body of suggestions to the pupil for use in getting the content of the textbook, fixing it firmly in mind, and evaluating the importance of the different parts. The second section proceeds on the hypothesis that history teaching is only half done without intelligent use of sources other than the textbook, and that some training in the use of historical method can, and should, be practised from the earliest years of high school. The third section contains instructions to pupils how to go about doing notebook assignments Experience has shown the author that such detailed hints are necessary. The fourth section recognizes the the value and importance of reading good historical fiction, and includes a list of some novels adapted for the semester's reading. For the section on "How we know about the Past," the excuse is offered that a short and understandable account of the methods of historical research is needed in order that work with sources shall mean much to the student, and that such an account is not available elsewhere. It is the author's opinion that all these features are necessary to the best work in history. Local conditions may make some features impossible. In that case, the instructions o...
