Book excerpt: Excerpt from Biblical Commentary on the Old Testament, Vol. 2: The Prophecies of Jeremiah In view of the impending fall of the kingdom of Judah, Jeremiah seeks to present the godly with a strong anchor of hope in the realization of God's gracious promises, which were to be fulfilled after the appointed season of punishment had passed. For this purpose, after predicting the ills of exile times, the prophet gives a comprehensive statement concerning the deliverance which the Lord will vouchsafe to His people in the future, and gathers together the repeated briefer promises regarding the restoration and glorious condition of Israel and Judah, so as to give a full description of the deliverance intended for all the covenant people under the sceptre of the future David. This detailed announcement of the deliverance consists of a prettylong prophetic address (which Hengstenberg very properly designates "the triumphal hymn of Israels salvation," chap, xxx. and xxxi.), and two pieces confirmatory of this address, viz.: (1) one recording a symbolical act performed by the prophet at God's command, - the sale of a piece of hereditary property in land during the last siege of Jerusalem, shortly before the breaking up of the kingdom, which commenced with the taking of the city, together with a message from God explaining this act, chap, xxxii.; and (2) another passage giving, in prophetic language, a renewed promise that Jerusalem and Judah would be restored with the blissful arrangements connected with the Davidic monarchy and the Levitical priesthood, chap, xxxiii. According to the headings given in xxxii. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Historical and Critical Commentary on the Old Testament, Vol. 2: With a New Translation Little remains to be added to the introductory observations of the preceding volume. The same mode of treatment has been adopted in this concluding Part of Leviticus. Here also the text has been illustrated in a threefold manner - by explanatory notes from the Biblical point of view, by a critical analysis, and by a survey of the results considered in the light of science and history. These different features prevail, respectively, in the general notes of the Commentary, in the Philological Remarks, and in the Treatises. The conclusions at which the author has arrived, tend to confirm the opinions which he ventured to express before, and which he has here endeavoured to support by fresh proofs and arguments. As in the course of these enquiries he has been led to discuss and to explain nearly all the legislative portions of the Pentateuch, he hopes to be able to condense the remaining Books of Numbers and Deuteronomy into one volume. The deliverance of Israel from the bondage of Egypt was at hand; also their adoption as the nation Of Jehovah (chap. Vi. 6, But for this a divine consecration was necessary, that their outward severance from the land of Egypt might be accompanied by an inward sever ance from everything of an Egyptian or heathen nature. This consecration was to be imparted by the Passover - a festival which was to lay the foundation for Israel's birth (hos. Ii. 5) into the new life of grace and fellowship with God, and to renew it perpetually in time to come. This festival was there fore instituted and commemorated before the exodus from Egypt. Vers. 1 - 28 contain the directions for the Passover: viz. Vers. 1 - 14 for the keeping of the feast of the Passover before the departure from Egypt, and vers. 15 - 20 for the seven days' feast of unleavened bread. In vers. 21 - 27 Moses com municates to the elders of the nation the leading instructions as to the former feast, and the carrying out of those instructions is mentioned in ver. 28. Vers. 1 and 2. By the words, in the land of Egypt, the law of the Passover which follows is brought into connection with the giving of the law at Sinai and in the fields of Moab, Israel as the people of Jehovah (isa. Xliii. 15) commenced with the institution of the Passover. As a proof of this, it was pre ceded by the appointment of a new era, fixing the commence ment of the congregation of Jehovah. This month (i.e. The present in which ye stand) be to you the head (i.e. The be ginning) of the months, the first let it be to you for the months of the year, i.e. Let the numbering of the months, and therefore the year also, begin with it. Consequently the Israelites had hitherto had a different beginning to their year, probably only a civil yehr, commencing with the sowing, and ending with the termination of the harvest (cf. Xxiii. 16) whereas the Egyptians most likely commenced their year with the overflowing of the Nile at the summer solstice (cf. Lepsius, Chron. 1, pp. 148 The month which was henceforth to be the first of the year, and is frequently so designated (chap. X1. 2, I7; Lev. Xxiii. 5, is called Abib (the ear-month) in chap. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Bible Readers Commentary, Vol. 1 of 2 Tux term New Testament unquestionably proceeds from the institution of the Lord's Sup per. The Lord designates the Eucharist the New Covenant in his blood, in the strict sense of the term. The writings which record the foundation of this new and eternal covenant are themselves called the New Covenant, the New Testament. This designation, also, indicates the connection and the contrast between these writings and those of the Old Covenant. The universal character of the New or Christian Covenant as compared with the old or Jewish is indicated by the language in which each is expressed. The Greek of the New Testament was the universal language of the civilized world, while the Hebrew of the Old was the peculiar dialect of the chosen race. Lange. The New Testament begins with the person of Christ, the facts of his manifestation in the flesh, and the words he gave from his Father; and accustoms us by degrees to behold his glory, to discern the drift of his teaching, and to expect the consequences of his work. It passes on to his body the Church, and Opens the dispensation of the Spirit, and carries us into the life of his people, down into the secret places of their hearts; and there translates the announcements of God into the experiences of man, and discovers a conversation in heaven and a life with Christ in God. It works out practical applications, is careful in the details of duty, provides for difficulties and perplexities, suggests the order of churches, and throws up barriers against the wiles of the devil. It shows us things to come, the course of the spiritual conflict, the close of this transient scene, the coming of the Lord, the resurrection of the dead, the eternal judgment, the new creation, and the life everlasting.
