Book Synopsis Formation of the Marathi Language by : J. Bloch
Download or read book Formation of the Marathi Language written by J. Bloch and published by Motilal Banarsidass Publ.. This book was released on 1970 with total page 440 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present work is the english rendering of La formation de la Langue Marathe - a well-known work by Jules Bloch. The original French version was the first systematic undertaking to coordinate data on Marathi languages,- tracing its evolution and development through various stages - from sanskrit Prakrit and Apabhramsa. Jules Bloch was expert in Dravidian languages, specially Tamil and had studied Indo-Aryan languages. He was therefore competant to undertake the study of Marathi language and place it in its whole environment. It is not surprising that the results of his studies stand unchallenged even half a century after the publication of his work.

Father Thomas Stephens, the first English traveler to Goa, a pioneer linguist, wrote Christa Puran in Marathi (1616) and Arte da Lingoa Canarim in Portuguese, printed in (1640). The latter is a grammar of Konkani, a language closely related to Marathi. It is the first grammar of its kind marking a new grammatical tradition for modern Indo-Aryan languages. The present volume contains an extensive account of Marathi phonology, morphology, word formation and syntax. It succinctly describes the accentual system, special compound verb forms, unique pronominal anaphors, complex agreement due to split ergative system, and special pronominal marking. The book also contains a case study of a child’s acquisition of Marathi and an essay on Women’s Language, the two topics that are increasingly becoming relevant to the grammar.

Book excerpt: Highly revered by hundreds of millions of Indian devotees over that past three centuries, Dasbodh is truly a "Grantharaj," a King among spiritual books. The great Saint Samartha Ramdas has many literary works attributed to him, of which, Dasbodh and Manache Shlok are the two most well-known. Dasbodh is very highly revered and commonly studied, even in many business and management courses. The sound principles contained within its pages help people from all walks of life to be successful not only in spiritual life, but in business, politics, society, and family life as well. Saint Samartha Ramdas is considered to be somewhat unique when compared to other previous or contemporary Maharashtran saints such as Jnanadev, Eknath, and Tukaram, in that their teachings for the most part focused exclusively on the topics Vedanta, devotion, mysticism, and spiritual practice. The teachings of Samartha Ramdas not only includes these topics, but in them, we also find messages of the importance of the wise use of positive effort, discrimination, determination, and practical shrewdness in daily life and politics. Samartha is recognized as having been a great leader and an advocate for socio-political and religious reforms, regeneration, and reorganization. He is well-known for promoting the ideal of establishing and maintaining a harmonious, happy, and morally healthy society supported by a solid foundation of deep spirituality.
Book Synopsis Nodes of Translation by : Martin Christof-Füchsle
Download or read book Nodes of Translation written by Martin Christof-Füchsle and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2024-01-29 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The volume examines translation of key German texts into the modern Indian languages as well as translation from the vernacular languages of South Asia into German. Our key concerns are shifting historical contexts, concepts, and translation practices. Bringing an intellectual history dimension to translation studies, we explore the history of translation, translators, and sites of translation. The organization of the volume follows some key questions. Which texts were being translated? At what point or period in time did this happen? What were the motivations behind these translations? Topics covered range from thematic nodes or clusters, e.g., translations of Economics texts and ideas into Urdu, or the translation of Marx and Engels into Marathi, to personal endeavours, such as the first Hindi translation of Goethe’s Faust done by Bholanath Sharma in 1939. Missionary as well as Marxist activist translation work from Malayalam, Tamil and Telugu is included too. On the other hand, German translations of Tagore and Gandhi setting in shortly after 1912 are also examined. Also discussed are political strategies of publication of translations from modern Indian languages guiding the output of publishing houses in the GDR after 1949. Further included are the translator’s perspective and the contemporary translation and literary culture. What happens through the process of linguistic translation in the realm of cultural translation? What can a historical study of translation tell us about the history of Indo-German intellectual entanglements in the long twentieth century? The volume brings together multifaceted interdisciplinary research work from South Asian and German studies to answer some of these questions.
