Book excerpt: Excerpt from On the Surface Temperature of the North Sea and of the North Atlantic When we have defined, in regard to the main temperature wave, the mean-value and the half-range, we get, by addition or subtraction of this latter value from the former, to what we may call the Mean Maximum and the Mean Minimum temperatures. They are not strictly the mean maxima or mean minima of the year, for to determine these we should have to take into our calculations the in uence of the half-yearly and other higher oscillations of temper ature. But as a rule even the half-yearly uctuation is of no great magnitude, and the higher oscillations are very small indeed, so small that we can scarcely say whether they are real phenomena or (as is much more probable) are mere appearances due to our imperfect data. In any case, the approximate Mean Maxima and Minima, as we have defined them, - the maxima and minima, that is to say, of the fundamental sine-wave, - are features of considerable interest, whose local variations are often well worth studying. Let us now begin, after this short introduction, to consider the main results of our temperature investigations. Our object is to understand the temperature phenomena of the North Sea, and of the waters which surround the other coasts of our own islands. But all our coastal waters are but a part of the great system of waters of the Atlantic Ocean, and we cannot properly understand any of our local phenomena without some preliminary knowledge of the ocean temperatures of the whole North Atlantic basin. The temperature phenomena of the ocean are closely inter connected with the system of ocean currents; and these in turn are correlated with the system of prevailing winds, and are greatly affected by the form itself of the ocean-basin. Were the whole globe covered by a shoreless ocean, the distribu tion of temperature therein would be comparatively simple; and in the absence of wind it would be very simple indeed. For the main phenomenon would be that of a steady cooling of the surface of the sea from the Equator towards the poles, the temperature varying from a maximum at the one to a minimum at the other, as a simple function of the cosine of the latitude, At the same time, the waters of the ocean would not be stationary; for the waters cooled in the neighbourhood of the pole would be rendered heavier thereby, and would tend to sink, while the warmer and lighter waters farther south would always tend to oat over the colder and heavier layers. There would, in short, be a steady drift to the northward of warm surface waters from the Equator, while the cold waters of the pole would form a steady return-current at the bottom. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Report of Ice and Ice Movements in the North Atlantic Ocean The subject of ice and ice movements is one to which the Hydrographic Office has given special attention, mainly through its branches at Boston and New York, where reports are regularly received and transmitted to the meteorological division of this Office; here the information is carefully tabulated, and appears on the monthly pilotchart of the North Atlantic Ocean, on which the ice for the previous month is plotted, and a course laid down to clear it. This course, though some 200 miles longer than the shortest possible route (close to Cape Eace), is the most ecomical one that can be followed, not only clearing the ice region, but also avoiding that greatest menace to navigation, fog. At first these precautionary measures were deemed excessive by many captains, but the number is notably decreasing annually, and their wisdom is becoming apparent in the gradual approximation to the pilot-chart routes by the trans-Atlantic steamer lines. As the season advances, the force of the Boston and New York branch offices is greatly occupied in furnishing information on this important subject to captains, for whom, on the eve of sailing, all the latest ice reports are plotted on the charts, and the managers of the steam-ship lines are supplied with copies of all ice reports received. The opening of navigation in the St. Lawrence River and Gulf is an important matter in the New York market, and the subsequent movement of the ice is a subject of great interest to those wishing to charter vessels for that trade. The Office has made every effort to collect the latest and most reliable data concerning the movement of ice in the vicinity of the Grand Banks, and the officer in charge of the Boston branch, in a previous report, states that the marked decrease in the supply of information on the subject was due to the fact of the steamer lines adopting the routes recommended by this Office. Book excerpt: Preface: In the training of weather officers for the armed services, it has become of increasing importance to give instruction in the characteristic weather conditions of many sections of the world because of the global scope of the present conflict. Although climatological and synoptic data are available for much of the world, this information is scattered and is not available in the form required for instructional purposes. At a conference on the training of weather officers held in Washington in February 1942 and attended by representatives of the institutions giving the training, the armed services and the Weather Bureau, this problem was recognized and discussed. At this conference the Massachusetts Institute of Technology agreed to prepare the present report on the North Atlantic region. Although written primarily for instructional purposes, it is hoped that it may also be of some value to meteorologists who are forecasting for this region. As indicated by the title, the report consists of two sections, one on the climatology of the region and one in which typical synoptic situations are illustrated and discussed. Insofar as possible the climatological data have been presented in the form of maps. An effort has been made to integrate the synoptic and climatological discussions wherever possible, and this has been facilitated, perhaps, by the fact that the climatological section has been prepared by a synoptic meteorologist. Although the major burden of preparing this report has fallen on Professor H. C. Willett and Professor J. M. Austin, several other members of our staff have made valuable contributions. Special credit is due Miss Margaret Whitcomb, Mrs. Karin Gleim and Miss Esther Hanchett for their work in assembling the climatological data and preparing the many charts. Professor B. Haurwitz has also assisted greatly in the selection and treatment of the climatological data. Mr. E. A. Murphy is responsible for the excellent plotting on the synoptic charts which makes the data readily legible in spite of the considerable reduction in the reproduction process. We are also indebted to the staffs of the libraries of the Blue Hill Meteorological Observatory and of the Institute of Geographical Exploration, both of Harvard University, for their kind assistance in locating much of the data utilized in this report.

Book excerpt: With the opening of the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution in July 1931, there was inaugurated a program of investigations in the deep waters of the western North Atlantic for which there had long been a great need. In contrast to most deep-sea investigations, which have had to be planned as single expeditions, the Institution was able to initiate a general program which could be carried out gradually in order to take advantage of knowledge gained during the course of the work. Suffcient funds having been provided for the continuous operation of its research vessel "Atlantis," work could be planned for all seasons of the year. Although these investigations have not been in progress for long and new data are continually being brought in by the "Atlantis," there are several reasons that make it seem desirable at this time to publish a preliminary report based on the completed temperature and salinity observations. In the first place, the problem of oceanic circulation is such that we cannot hope for a satisfactory solution for a long time to come. Moreover, it would be unwise to allow too much data to accumulate, because several years may pass before we can arrive at more important conclusions. Secondly, both the chemical and biological programs undertaken at the same time, require as a background the general scheme of circulation in the western North Atlantic as well as the distribution of temperature and salinity. It is, in fact, the necessity of taking into consideration the movements of the sea water which ties together the whole subject of oceanography. Therefore, it is the duty of those interested in ocean circulation to make available their findings as soon as possible for investigators of other problems in the same area. The "Atlantis" temperature and salinity observations discussed in these pages were planned with two main purposes in view.
