Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A key resource for coaches, scientists and clinicians Sport is by its nature competitive and even during youth it is performed at different levels with elite young athletes at the top of the performance pyramid. A coordinated series of comprehensive, research-based reviews on factors underlying the performance of children and adolescents involved in competitive sport is presented in this volume. Leading exercise and sport scientists provide the latest information on the physiology of young elite athletes, the essential role of nutrition, and the effects of endurance, high-intensity and high-resistance training and overtraining as well as on the importance of laboratory and field-based monitoring of young athletes' performances. Further, thermoregulation and environmental factors that might affect performance are re-viewed. Finally, strategies for preventing sudden cardiac death and the diagnosis and management of common sport injuries in young athletes are discussed. The book provides up-to-date, evidence-based information for sports scientists, coaches, physiotherapists, pediatric sports medicine specialists, and other professionals involved in supporting elite young athletes.

Book excerpt: This study was designed to compare the effects of warm-up on performance of tenth grade boys in the running long jump, forty yard dash, and shot put. An attempt was made to determine whether or not warm-up was c; of value in improving performance of the running long jump, forty yard, and the shot put. The subjects were forty-one tenth grade boys enrolled in a required physical education class at Lincoln High School, Wisconsin Rapids, Wisconsin. The subjects were members of an intact physical education class. The group members followed a specific program of performance in the running long jump, forty yard dash and shot put with and without preliminary warm-up exercises for an eight week period. The statistical technique used to indicate differences in mean scores on the warm-up and non warm-up performance for each test was a t-test for non-independent groups. The five percent level of confidence was used for acceptance or rejection of the null hypotheses. Values for "t" indicated that there were no significant differences in the warm-up and non warm-up scores for the running long jump, forty yard dash, and shot put. The results of this study indicate that preliminary stretching warm-up exercises as administered in this study to tenth grade boys will not significantly improve performance of the running long jump, forty yard dash, and shot put.

This book was released on 2020-05-21 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The desire to improve muscle function and prevent overuse injuries from exercise and throughout training has led to the development of various methods to aid recovery and track readiness to perform. Ergogenic aids such as cold-water immersion, massage, and dynamic recovery procedures may have positive effects but the results of the related research remain equivocal. Furthermore, novel interventions in this scenario, like compression garments, ice vests, and photobiomodulation therapy are promising but need more evidence-based data to support their effectiveness. Similarly, to properly monitor individual physical conditioning, there is a growing interest toward unobtrusive measures to accurately represent physiological status during and/or after exercise. There are several techniques being used, such as subjective ratings of well-being, heart rate monitoring, hormonal and hematological profile assessments. However, more sensitive indexes like heart rate variability and muscle activation (voluntary and/or involuntary) are arising as attractive alternatives that may delineate physical conditioning status and readiness to perform more precisely than the aforementioned measures. The purpose of this Research Topic is to critically evaluate and summarize recent data from observational and intervention studies related to non-invasive methods designed to promote recovery and objectively monitor training status. Their association to physical performance and physiological recovery in athletes during training and competition is a major focus of this Topic.
